so the crt was never soldered properly, the dials were all off, and now look it run as new. these old sets have a nice phosphor colors. as you mention the green, this is special for those sets. nice vids as always.

When I repaired a CRT socket, I soldered strands of new wire to the originals to use as leaders / threading aides. That was on a B&W crt, so there were fewer pins to deal with.
glad i scrolled through the comments, I was struggling with a 6sn7 a few years back with a detached base, ended up spiral wrapping some fine gauge copper wire to the original leads to thread back through the base and flowed plenty of solder into them (as shango noted its important to clean up the original wires good, I found scotchbrite and flux works fine. The original cement was mostly marble flour (you can find the rca mixture online) but i found high temp JB weld works just as fine for attaching the base.

Seeing the construction of these old tellies helps me understand why my grandparents (and parents!) would unplug all TV sets at night, and often when going out. "Is the TV unplugged?" would be a common shout through the house before going out anywhere.
Sounds like someone had a PYE model 619 (I think it was) or it's equivalent RBM model. Both known for their self immolating properties! Rather like lithium batteries nowadays, you could never trust them to not burst into flames, and you absolutely never left them plugged in and unattended! 🎆✨🔥🔥🔥🙎
My parents had one of these when I was growing up. Dad worked tons of hours to afford it. It's last day was in the early 80's, one day we were watching it and the nipple on the picture tube popped for some reason. It was cool to see you get this one working!

It was always the focus pin and they were never soldered well at the factory. I'm sure echos of some of my choice language still haunts the halls of the old shop... even though it's now an auto parts store.
As an old,school radio tv repair man (76years old now) what you stated about a tech going into someones home way back then and flipping their TV upside down to service anything in there like that wouldnt have happened. We wouldve had a tube tester and a tube caddy along with screwdrivers and maybe a pair of pliers and if it wasnt a tube they were told it needed to go to the shop for those repairs they wernt done in the home
The CRT has much greater dynamic range than the LCD, hence greater color saturation and contrast, the difference is like Kodachrome vs. Ektachrome. But the LCD has no geometric or convergence error, while the CRT has plenty.

("Showcase", was an hour of kids tap dancing, singing show tunes, and doing magic tricks; envision the Ted Mack Amateur Hour on Quaalude) In 1970, Lancelot Link - Secret Chimp, premiered, and Saturday mornings became GLORIOUS!!!! By 1972, it was decided that children's television, as a whole, would need to become "more educationally driven", and by 1976, Wile E. Coyote, Genius, was teaching calculus to 5 year olds... It was at that very moment that our world forgot that the most important aspect of the meaning of life was "enjoyment". By the year 2020, every prediction by H.G. I also like the depth of field on the roundies. Something like a stadium shot, you really get a holographic effect. Best seen in person. The color resolution and subtlety helps make up for ntsc resolution. Roundies are just so nice to watch.
The wire used had to have certain properties. It must match the expansion of the glass, it must wet with the glass and it must not outgas. It should be stable and non reactive as possible too. Tungsten or copper coated tungsten was used and special alloys - a trade name of one Dumet is still used for many glass bonding applications. If you want to see it being done you can watch the nice man in the dress make tubes from scratch. The guy is a genius.
I've had to do that as well on a 1950s Viking B&W that I got a year ago or so and it is a pain in the ass. The plastic base was loose and I could not get any reading on the tube even though the filament lit fine. I wanted to make sure that none of the wires to the pins had broken before troubleshooting the lack of HV, so I desoldered the base then had to put it back on. I did get the HV working (not sure how) and the tube does work. It's old and tired, but it works.
We had the 25MC36 (SAMS 805-4), one of my first electronic 'training tools' of my teens. It had been my grandparents living room TV. The '36 had a 25" rectangular CRT. One year, maybe I was 9, ours failed Friday before Thanksgiving and the TV repairman had the set on its side with the bottom removed trying to get it going. It left with him and we borrowed something so football that weekend was seen.
Totally agree on the color quality on these old round tube sets, especially the RCA sets. Yes the picture was not the HD like today, but color was beautiful. The reds, and greens on this set are excellent.
I remember those chassis fondly, in 1978 when I started tv repair, many Zenith, RCA, philco, dumont, sylvania, Curtis Mathes, Sears, and soo many more, I can still remember the smell of the tubes and electronics when they were running... All those flyback repairs...so much nostalgia. Best wishes sir..😊
Please continue to do more TVs. Here in the Uk, we never had commercially available colour roundies. As we didn’t get colour until 68/69. The image on that set was amazing for its age. Love this. Remember, Black beauties matter.
On occasion I've had projects with a very difficult repair. I commiserate and admire that you have the tenacity to perform such unique repairs. Great Job!
I did years earlier a crt socket refit, similar like you. It was my hungarian made set called Kékes from the mid 60s. If I remember, the crt was polish made, suffered from loose socket and solder joints. I figured out, the puzzle solves much easier when the leads are extended a little, with thin copper wires soldered, and fit the wires remote from the tube. As I see, the socket in your case has enough space for 2 wires soldered, too. As all the wires fitted, it was easy to pull those through. Also applied some 2pack epoxy between the glass and the bakelite to prevent it from wobbling.
I have that exact Wellar soldering iron! My first iron, given to me by my dad in the mid 90s. I still use it frequently to this day, and only replaced the tip once.
Got to love those old tube type color TVs, when they are working good, they have a nice picture. Zenith built the best back in the day, they lasted for years. I have an old Zenith Trans Oceanic radio, a model Royal 3000 - 1 that still works good, one transistor has been replaced, the rest looks like original parts. From what I have figured out, it was from 1964, it has the 12 volt power jack on the side. The year before did not have the power jack. It looks all beat up looking and the front covers are missing, but it still works.
I have several Zenith's in my modest collection and just got through w/a 8s463 restore; that and a 5s(?) tabletop ....Any way EXCELLENT TONES and way off the charts! My only concern is their use & method of elevated grounding through the heater circuts no less (that aren't even connected to each other). Makes me think they were practicing VOO DOO back in the day...but still.... can't argue with success.
The Zenith roundies were the finest quality, IMHO with their hand wired circuits and high quality components. I recently was lucky to acquire a 1964 Zenith chassis 25LC20. CRT is good, did the cataract repair, all the tubes are Zenith branded, and most have 1963 code dates. It actually looks like a low hour set. It is true that these TVs produced a fine color picture- maybe it was Zenith's unique scheme of high level color demodulation, not sure. My set arrived missing the back, so I don't know the model number but that 25LC20 color chassis with it's 26 tubes is a beautiful beast!
So cool watching you fix these old sets. I wish we had an analog channel 6 here. I’d like to have one that carries the news on it. When analog was still the norm, I had a car radio adaptor that tuned in Channels 2 thru 13 on it. I had 30 mile commutes to work, nice to be able to listen to the local news on my way home from our local ABC, or CBS station. Couldn’t listen to NBC or FOX, as those are both UHF.
I recently picked up a Packard Bell roundie 98c7e. Tube tests good and has no sign of high hour usage just like yours. I usually mess with much newer TVs and monitors but this video is encouraging me.
Yes the chassis looked oddly similar to a ct16... not that I have a whole lot of experience but I can read a schematic ok. Well so far I found one gassy high voltage rectifier in the flyback cage. I’m still a little mystified by the swivel chassis and haven’t quite worked up the balls to perform « instant capacitor reforming » yet.
Nice camera action bud . Looks like a few drinks were spilled on that oldie. Mom n Pop had a similar set . Still worked in the 80s . Having fun watching these oldies being rejuvenated . 📺😷
I grew up with a 1978, 25-inch floor console TV Zenith in the 1980s when Zenith was one of the kings of television. The thing weigh a ton but it was a workhorse of a set. My folks had that set for about 35 years!
Loved this resurrection on a Zenith color set. They were bulletproof TV's no matter what my grandfather and dad said. They liked Admiral and RCA sets. Put an antenna on the roof. Make sure it lights up at night with a red colored beacon so those damn airplanes don't hit it!🗼🛩;-) ! This fourth of July is going to be noisy so get a good set of earplugs too!
If antenna tower is shorter than 200 feet it may not need FAA lights, but it depends on antenna tower location so it may need lights anyway. I don't know where shango is relative to airports, flight lines but I do sometimes hear small aircraft flying over his place.
I have a gun assembly from a Magnavox combo I went to Long Island to pick up. Seller necked it getting it out of the house. Tried to hide it. E-bay purchase. Wish I could have saved the Admiral in trade for the guns and socket. It sits on a shelf and I like it there just fine. Great work and again I'm surprised how well that set works with little extra work. To the owner I wish them many hours of oldie show viewing pleasure. Plus they have Shango066 magic in their set. An old roundie color TV with a strong CRT these days is a rare bird, indeed! It must have been a royal pain in the neck to get those extremely delicate wires to go through those pins when installing the replacement connector for that picture tube. Seeing these sets sure brings back a lot of childhood memories!
Wow, man that set takes me back. The very first color set I ever saw looked exactly like that. I was young, just beginning to date young ladies, and I had met this cute little gal, she was sweet as hell, her folks were military, the dad was in Nam and mom and the two girls came to live in our home town while he served. We never got serious, just a bit of petting as young kids do, but they had this color set. I had never seen color TV before and her mom said I could come over and watch Disney's Wonderful World of Color with them one Sunday evening. What a trip man all those colors it was simply AMAZING! A year later I began to date her older sister, now she got damn serious about shit, man it was the year of love and we got deep into that but this is indeed another story. I often wonder what happened to those gals...

Great video, as I have a very similar (working) Zenith with a strong CRT...likely the same chassis as this unit. I'll attest to the great color that these Zeniths can still produce.
When I was a kid, it was a thrill to see a color TV, but of course most people cranked the color all the way up, or misadjusted the tint, so people were green or red most of the time until I learned how to adjust the controls. Good job on that TV, and more power to you. I'd much rather stick to my 1920s and 1930s radios, where 600 volts is the high voltage!
Shango066, your comment about the beautiful color the RCA 19", 70 degree deflection angle "roundie" CRTs had was quite true. I had a CTC-10 with the CYP22A CRT (no bonded faceplace) and the colors where gorgeous, especially the red. The rectangular CRTs were noticeably faded in comparison. Of course, if you moved anything metal in the room, you had to do a manual deguass but, that was the way things were then before the built-in deguasser.

Great video. Since you had a hard time prying those wires through the pins of the CRT socket, I would like to share this tip. Make those wires 'longer' with fine strands of copper wire, about 5" to 10" long. Just solder these strands to each CRT wire. Now you can watch inside the socket, while you can easily feed the wires into the corresponding holes. Once the strands are in, you can pull them through from the other side.
For all original capacitors, this set is quite watchable! The colors as you mentioned are very vivid. I hope the new owner refinishes the cabinet and maybe change out those suspect capacitors and have a beautiful piece of usable antique TV to display. That one is a keeper! No doggy bed!

It looks so cool how you are watching the corona virus news,,on a 55 year old roundie colour tv,,,with only a couple of shorted diodes to replace,,,and readjust the vertical and horizontal holds,,along with the 3 colours,,red,green,blue. Looks real nice with the valve tubes glowing inside. Might want to clean the dust off the tube valves and the rest to prevent it from overheating too much.
If only we could replace all the bogus "news" content with Shango vids... They are among the few things left that help me keep my sanity, though that is rapidly diminishing with each passing day.
The solution is simple: stop watching news. I accidentally caught a newscast on the tv while in a waiting room recently. I can’t believe people still watch that garbage.
I have done many refitting of CRT caps. The solution is to solder extended fine copper strands to each of the tube leads, poke the extended wires through the pins and pull the tube leads through. I typically use the copper wire strands from a power cord. This makes the job easy and eliminates the need to brutally break the cap as depicted here.
I resoldered the base on a 3RP1 scope tube. Same nuisance, plus the base was twisted on the neck at the factory, spiraling all the wires. Made it fun to figure out which ones to start in which pins.
What a nice set! I'm in the Netherlands and the only color roundie we had was a Philips 21KX100A from 1963 and it was a prototype. Never actually been sold. I happen to have one, it is also at my youtube channel. I love these old US roundies, but they are impossible to find over here unfortunately...
Back in the day I saw two round color TV sets and of the two, the owners apparently didn't know how to set the colors? I remember a football game where I thought the green grass was going to spill out of the TV as green drive was set way too high. Same thing with another where the guy must have liked red? It looked like it was about to bleed on his rug! Thanks for posting. I had no idea that they could produce a good picture?

My family bought a TV like that right around the same year brand new. I remember the colors being bad Vibrant. Never I don't remember it ever being fixed in 16 years. Parents passed away and it was so big I didn't want to move it. Probably still working to this day.
I found it funny when you said about turning the TV upside down to access the bottom and doing that on their rug. The upside down part is for nomal use in upside down land of Australia. Nice old telly by the way.
Its funny cause I had a 66 and 64 zenith and the 1966 version had a diode go bad, that gear cracked, the crt read really bad on my bk tester but worked great and was really strong and a the little tiny disc capacitor .0022 shorted in the vertical circuit. Also the 1966 version had a bad bulb socket for the dial and it burned up one of the two filament fuse and made it look like the line transformer burned up. I ran a wire from the tubes that still lit up to the tubes that were out and not only did that line transformer power all the tubes form the good side but when that bulb wire shorted again, it lit up all the tubes and the saftey pin I used like a filament and still didn't hurt the transformer. The color de-mod. .18 cap failed on it and i fixed that and made the whole tv work again including the bad line fuses. The 1964 version of that set had a bad CRT and every tube cap everything was original and never had an issue. like rebuilt the crt and a perfect working set.

Motion is no trouble for analog CRT sets. No effort at all for that technology.

Tungsten or copper coated tungsten was used and special alloys - a trade name of one Dumet is still used for many glass bonding applications. If you want to see it being done you can watch the nice man in the dress make tubes from scratch. The guy is a genius.

I've had to do that as well on a 1950s Viking B&W that I got a year ago or so and it is a pain in the ass. The plastic base was loose and I could not get any reading on the tube even though the filament lit fine. I wanted to make sure that none of the wires to the pins had broken before troubleshooting the lack of HV, so I desoldered the base then had to put it back on. I did get the HV working (not sure how) and the tube does work. It's old and tired, but it works.
We had the 25MC36 (SAMS 805-4), one of my first electronic 'training tools' of my teens. It had been my grandparents living room TV. The '36 had a 25" rectangular CRT. One year, maybe I was 9, ours failed Friday before Thanksgiving and the TV repairman had the set on its side with the bottom removed trying to get it going. It left with him and we borrowed something so football that weekend was seen.
“I bet it’ll get channel 6”. I think this line is in every Shango TV resurrection video. LOL. Amazing video!
Totally agree on the color quality on these old round tube sets, especially the RCA sets. Yes the picture was not the HD like today, but color was beautiful. The reds, and greens on this set are excellent.
I remember those chassis fondly, in 1978 when I started tv repair, many Zenith, RCA, philco, dumont, sylvania, Curtis Mathes, Sears, and soo many more, I can still remember the smell of the tubes and electronics when they were running...
All those flyback repairs...so much nostalgia.

Please continue to do more TVs. Here in the Uk, we never had commercially available colour roundies. As we didn’t get colour until 68/69. The image on that set was amazing for its age. Love this.

I did years earlier a crt socket refit, similar like you. It was my hungarian made set called Kékes from the mid 60s. If I remember, the crt was polish made, suffered from loose socket and solder joints. I figured out, the puzzle solves much easier when the leads are extended a little, with thin copper wires soldered, and fit the wires remote from the tube. As I see, the socket in your case has enough space for 2 wires soldered, too. As all the wires fitted, it was easy to pull those through. Also applied some 2pack epoxy between the glass and the bakelite to prevent it from wobbling.
I have that exact Wellar soldering iron! My first iron, given to me by my dad in the mid 90s.
I still use it frequently to this day, and only replaced the tip once.

Got to love those old tube type color TVs, when they are working good, they have a nice picture. Zenith built the best back in the day, they lasted for years. I have an old Zenith Trans Oceanic radio, a model Royal 3000 - 1 that still works good, one transistor has been replaced, the rest looks like original parts. From what I have figured out, it was from 1964, it has the 12 volt power jack on the side. The year before did not have the power jack. It looks all beat up looking and the front covers are missing, but it still works.
I have several Zenith's in my modest collection and just got through w/a 8s463 restore; that and a 5s(?) tabletop ....Any way EXCELLENT TONES and way off the charts! My only concern is their use & method of elevated grounding through the heater circuts no less (that aren't even connected to each other). Makes me think they were practicing VOO DOO back in the day...but still.... can't argue with success.
The Zenith roundies were the finest quality, IMHO with their hand wired circuits and high quality components. I recently was lucky to acquire a 1964 Zenith chassis 25LC20. CRT is good, did the cataract repair, all the tubes are Zenith branded, and most have 1963 code dates. It actually looks like a low hour set. It is true that these TVs produced a fine color picture- maybe it was Zenith's unique scheme of high level color demodulation, not sure. My set arrived missing the back, so I don't know the model number but that 25LC20 color chassis with it's 26 tubes is a beautiful beast!
So cool watching you fix these old sets. I wish we had an analog channel 6 here. I’d like to have one that carries the news on it. When analog was still the norm, I had a car radio adaptor that tuned in Channels 2 thru 13 on it. I had 30 mile commutes to work, nice to be able to listen to the local news on my way home from our local ABC, or CBS station. Couldn’t listen to NBC or FOX, as those are both UHF.
I recently picked up a Packard Bell roundie 98c7e. Tube tests good and has no sign of high hour usage just like yours. I usually mess with much newer TVs and monitors but this video is encouraging me.

Yes the chassis looked oddly similar to a ct16... not that I have a whole lot of experience but I can read a schematic ok. Well so far I found one gassy high voltage rectifier in the flyback cage. I’m still a little mystified by the swivel chassis and haven’t quite worked up the balls to perform « instant capacitor reforming » yet.
Nice camera action bud . Looks like a few drinks were spilled on that oldie. Mom n Pop had a similar set . Still worked in the 80s . Having fun watching these oldies being rejuvenated . 📺😷

I grew up with a 1978, 25-inch floor console TV Zenith in the 1980s when Zenith was one of the kings of television. The thing weigh a ton but it was a workhorse of a set. My folks had that set for about 35 years!
Loved this resurrection on a Zenith color set. They were bulletproof TV's no matter what my grandfather and dad said. They liked Admiral and RCA sets.
Put an antenna on the roof. Make sure it lights up at night with a red colored beacon so those damn airplanes don't hit it!🗼🛩;-) !

If antenna tower is shorter than 200 feet it may not need FAA lights, but it depends on antenna tower location so it may need lights anyway. I don't know where shango is relative to airports, flight lines but I do sometimes hear small aircraft flying over his place.

I have a gun assembly from a Magnavox combo I went to Long Island to pick up. Seller necked it getting it out of the house. Tried to hide it. E-bay purchase. Wish I could have saved the Admiral in trade for the guns and socket. It sits on a shelf and I like it there just fine.

An old roundie color TV with a strong CRT these days is a rare bird, indeed! It must have been a royal pain in the neck to get those extremely delicate wires to go through those pins when installing the replacement connector for that picture tube. Seeing these sets sure brings back a lot of childhood memories!
Wow, man that set takes me back. The very first color set I ever saw looked exactly like that. I was young, just beginning to date young ladies, and I had met this cute little gal, she was sweet as hell, her folks were military, the dad was in Nam and mom and the two girls came to live in our home town while he served. We never got serious, just a bit of petting as young kids do, but they had this color set. I had never seen color TV before and her mom said I could come over and watch Disney's Wonderful World of Color with them one Sunday evening. What a trip man all those colors it was simply AMAZING! A year later I began to date her older sister, now she got damn serious about shit, man it was the year of love and we got deep into that but this is indeed another story. I often wonder what happened to those gals...

Great video, as I have a very similar (working) Zenith with a strong CRT...likely the same chassis as this unit. I'll attest to the great color that these Zeniths can still produce.

When I was a kid, it was a thrill to see a color TV, but of course most people cranked the color all the way up, or misadjusted the tint, so people were green or red most of the time until I learned how to adjust the controls. Good job on that TV, and more power to you. I'd much rather stick to my 1920s and 1930s radios, where 600 volts is the high voltage!
I love the digital distortion on the vintage tube. It's like crossing the time streams.
Shango066, your comment about the beautiful color the RCA 19", 70 degree deflection angle "roundie" CRTs had was quite true. I had a CTC-10 with the CYP22A CRT (no bonded faceplace) and the colors where gorgeous, especially the red. The rectangular CRTs were noticeably faded in comparison. Of course, if you moved anything metal in the room, you had to do a manual deguass but, that was the way things were then before the built-in deguasser.

Great video. Since you had a hard time prying those wires through the pins of the CRT socket, I would like to share this tip. Make those wires 'longer' with fine strands of copper wire, about 5" to 10" long. Just solder these strands to each CRT wire. Now you can watch inside the socket, while you can easily feed the wires into the corresponding holes. Once the strands are in, you can pull them through from the other side.

For all original capacitors, this set is quite watchable! The colors as you mentioned are very vivid. I hope the new owner refinishes the cabinet and maybe change out those suspect capacitors and have a beautiful piece of usable antique TV to display. That one is a keeper! No doggy bed!

It looks so cool how you are watching the corona virus news,,on a 55 year old roundie colour tv,,,with only a couple of shorted diodes to replace,,,and readjust the vertical and horizontal holds,,along with the 3 colours,,red,green,blue.

Might want to clean the dust off the tube valves and the rest to prevent it from overheating too much.

The solution is simple: stop watching news. I accidentally caught a newscast on the tv while in a waiting room recently. I can’t believe people still watch that garbage.
I don’t have access to local channels. Or cable. So I rarely see the news. It is great!

I have done many refitting of CRT caps. The solution is to solder extended fine copper strands to each of the tube leads, poke the extended wires through the pins and pull the tube leads through.
I typically use the copper wire strands from a power cord. This makes the job easy and eliminates the need to brutally break the cap as depicted here.

I resoldered the base on a 3RP1 scope tube. Same nuisance, plus the base was twisted on the neck at the factory, spiraling all the wires. Made it fun to figure out which ones to start in which pins.

What a nice set! I'm in the Netherlands and the only color roundie we had was a Philips 21KX100A from 1963 and it was a prototype. Never actually been sold. I happen to have one, it is also at my youtube channel. I love these old US roundies, but they are impossible to find over here unfortunately...

Back in the day I saw two round color TV sets and of the two, the owners apparently didn't know how to set the colors? I remember a football game where I thought the green grass was going to spill out of the TV as green drive was set way too high. Same thing with another where the guy must have liked red? It looked like it was about to bleed on his rug! Thanks for posting. I had no idea that they could produce a good picture?

My family bought a TV like that right around the same year brand new. I remember the colors being bad Vibrant. Never I don't remember it ever being fixed in 16 years. Parents passed away and it was so big I didn't want to move it. Probably still working to this day.
I found it funny when you said about turning the TV upside down to access the bottom and doing that on their rug. The upside down part is for nomal use in upside down land of Australia. Nice old telly by the way.
Its funny cause I had a 66 and 64 zenith and the 1966 version had a diode go bad, that gear cracked, the crt read really bad on my bk tester but worked great and was really strong and a the little tiny disc capacitor .0022 shorted in the vertical circuit. Also the 1966 version had a bad bulb socket for the dial and it burned up one of the two filament fuse and made it look like the line transformer burned up. I ran a wire from the tubes that still lit up to the tubes that were out and not only did that line transformer power all the tubes form the good side but when that bulb wire shorted again, it lit up all the tubes and the saftey pin I used like a filament and still didn't hurt the transformer. The color de-mod. .18 cap failed on it and i fixed that and made the whole tv work again including the bad line fuses. The 1964 version of that set had a bad CRT and every tube cap everything was original and never had an issue. like rebuilt the crt and a perfect working set.
