Stan Winston was a treasure. He also let the Florida Antique Wireless Group (FAWG) host their tailgate swao-meets in their parking lot at ESRC three times a year. He was a good man and honest, too. He is certainly missed, already. BTW, it was more like 3 1/2 - 4million tubes!

Maybe we could get lucky and somebody is going to keep track of that establishment and let us all know what's going on with the place. Also, the audiophile world would probably be interested in this place as well.
Hell, at the very least, somebody could offer his kids something for the tubes, and they could just sell the building outright or something. I guess time will tell with this situation.

    • @bro.weaver1282
      @bro.weaver1282 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bro.weaver1282 The way I see things, somebody that has done business with their Father has to have access to his kids. As far as the electronics world is concerned, we all know that ESRC is a national treasure. This is like hearing that Antique Electronic Supply is going out of business.
Hmmm. The Japanese audio guys would probably be interested in purchasing the place, although we'd probably say adios to all of the audio tubes instantly. All I know is that the owner of ESRC has dealt with a lot of us very fairly over the years. If some electronics folks do purchase the place, I can only imagine what kind of prices we're going to see, and it won't be to our benefit. Truly, this is sad news.

I always fixes and resurrected stuff. I remember back in 2017, I got my 1926 Victor VV 8-4 Orthophonic Victrola at a junk shop in Catskill, NY and it was in really bad shape. The wood veneer was fallen apart, and the spring motor was bad. I cleaned them up, put new grease in double spring barrels, put back together, wind them up, and BAM! The turntable is up to speed, put a 78 RPM record in, place the needle into the record, and it walla! It plays excellent.
Last year, I also got another portable phonograph from the same junk store, and it’s a 1923 Camp-Fone by Health Builders, one of the rarest portable phonographs out there, and it has no model number on there. I cleaned them up, put new grease in, and it has the same problem after I first got it. When I first got my Camp-Fone, the spring motor was in bad shape due to old grease that has been frozen for the last 80 to 90 years. After a few months, I went back to my Camp-Fone, check the spring motor, and what I found that the governor was frozen. That cause the phonograph from running too fast. I have to take those three pieces apart, clean the shaft, put the three pieces back in, put the governor back in, put back together, wind them up, turn on the turntable, put a 78, put the needle into the record, and it plays and works like a champ.
Camp-Fone was one of the rarest brand for a portable phonograph, because it was made by Health Builders Inc. back in 1923, and that company no longer exists. It was founded by Walter Camp who invented football, and also created a series of early exercise records for Health Builders during the 1920’s.

@chris younts So, how do we get in touch with them is my question? Maybe we could do a group-buy on the tubes as well, if we can get in touch with the right people. Either that, or maybe some old, wealthy ham could step up to the plate. I'm thinking about Steve Smith out there in LA, Shango, which would be the Harris Electronics dude. I forgot his call. Would be nice if he purchased the place and allowed us to sort and group-buy the material, or someone like him. Hell, maybe Antique Electronic Supply would be interested?

My Sons who are now adults told me that they are not interested in the items and when I kick the bucket all the collection will go to the rubbish dump as they do not know what the items are and are too busy to sort things out. Years ago, I rented a shop space in South MPLS which was in the back of a TV repair shop. The repair shop had long since closed but the owner would hang out in back in our rented space and drink beer all day. He must have been in his mid 80’s. Nice old dude. Any way the front (old shop front) was chock FULL of everything. Mountains of tube cartons, testers and old sets. I was not into this scene back then and I kick myself over and over. Then one day, he didn’t show up. He just passed. Couple weeks later we were given notice to vacate by the family as they were selling the building. 3 days after that, a dumpster on wheels grabbed everything and took it all away. Kills me now

Back in late 70s there was what was once a hardware store of some kind when I was a tiny kid in 1960 ish I remember going in there with my dad. In late 70s it was full of all kinds of electronic and TV repair stuff. We were building equipment for a band and went through the whole place looking to see if there was anything we could use. I have never seen that before in my life, probably because I'm in a much cooler place, Michigan, and it is fascinating to watch how you do that.
Dealing with CRTs and talking about implosion reminds me of when I changed the picture tube on my old Motorola from the 40s back I'm 1970 and my buddy that liked to break shit especially glass got highly interested when I told him about how it's a high vacuum and can do that. When I was done with the old tube he got a big cardboard box and a hammer. I didn't watch. He said it was cool.
The set I got my replacement flat glass with metal cone picture tube from had the safety plastic ( not sealed up like these color roundness) all busted up and had a mark on the glass front. The guy I got it from told me about how he got in a fight with his sister and one of them threw a hammer. ( nice )

@Shango66 I've done around 10 Zenith CRTs using a cold no18 guitar string to cut the glue on the safety glass. I've even done it outside on a cold 40degree fall night. Takes a bit of elbow grease to pull the wood handles my wire is affixed to but it works well for me.
If you decide you don't want it this set at the end of part 2 I'd be interested in buying the remote control sub-chassis, tuner sub-chassis, front controls sub-chassis, and any other remote set specific parts on it needed to upgrade a non-remote set...The mouse odor thing doesn't bug me. I've dealt with several sets that bad before.
I've been to ESRC. Back in the early 2000's-2010 when I lived in the region, the FAWG (Florida Antique Wireless Group) used to have swapmeets in the ESRC parking lot. The place wasn't quite as big as a Home Depot floorspace wise back then (haven't seen it since) the floor space was more like 1-2.5 Mcdonald's buildings gutted. They did have roughly 2 story ceilings in the warehouse and tall shelves of sorted tubes with narrow aisles. They usually had a mountain of new unsorted tube caddies and boxes near the front loading door and as time marched on some of that migrated down the aisles still unsorted...

You're right to think about these things. I'm a young boomer, my kids are aged 5, 11, 14 and I don't know if any of them would want my legacy of audio and video equipment. But how would I plan what to do if I get the lurgy and go the way of Betamax? I suppose it would all end up in an auction somewhere but few people would know just how rare and precious some of the kit is. Except perhaps my TH-cam followers, and some of those may be boomers too!

the tubes are valuable assets. the kids are undoubtedly fighting for their value, so think it through: that stuff will go to auction.BECAUSE IT ALWAYS DOES!! No one will throw away a valuable inventory of vacuum tubes in 2020. You're worrying over nothing. but whatever makes you feel good.

To be fair, he did say the kids have no interest in it, which might also mean they have no knowledge of just how sought after it is. At that point anything is possible. Maybe a family friend will step in?

Wow! I Remember that greasy goo that you describe as rats urine and faeces from the time that I was working as a mechanic on small platform scissor lifts. One was owned by a giant bakery and it came from the customer to us for maintenance once a year. And this dirty stuff was everywhere inside that machine. It was exactly as in this TV set with faeces, dead rats, nest materials and it even had maggots in it. But no problem, I can handle that. Wear gloves, give it a good clean and take care just like you do.

Oh, and if you're wondering why you are getting a surge in popularity on your channel in recent months, Shango, that would be because I have been promoting you on other channels (when appropriate) for the the last 6 months or so, dude. You're welcome :D.
Expect a surge in your germanium transistor videos. The guitar pedal folks will enjoy watching your explanation on using the Russian transistors you've collected and used.

More chance of catching Hantavirus from the rats nest than getting lead poisoning from the components/solder.

I would think the owners family will attempt to sell the tube inventory... Gary Stork was friends with the Miller Family that owned Voice of Music ... when they went bankrupt... Gary had the sense to save all the parts sitting in VM warehouses ... otherwise... VM would be a footnote in history...
