I think a large contributing factor to the game's weapons being so underwhelming is their sound design. Whereas in the original F.E.A.R. even the pistol sounded meaty, in Project Origin everything sounds like a wet fart.

atl least they didn't went in opposite direction...
doom 3 shotgun has metallic sound and a ok-ish gunshot but the horizontal spread makes it completely useless weapon 2 meters away from th target unless you go with doom's spirit and shove it into demon's mouth.

The game had been a lot better around 2007, you can find gameplay for how the game was back then as shown in E3 2007. There's a lot more gameplay which you can find from that era and the game as a whole was a lot better. Most of the bad changes came in after Craig Hubbard and the lead level designer left the team around 2008, and also as a result of consoles just not running the game very well.

But then they cartoonised and consolehumped during production. It was still a good game but only half as good as it could have been.

I am surprised no one talks about leaning being removed, with changes to medkits, and accuracy when discussing gameplay differences from FEAR 1 to FEAR 2. Which is hilarious since FEAR 2's linear arena design would benefit from leaning, especially on hard. FEAR 2 on hard a regular grunt can kill you at the drop of a hat from full health & no armor. Medkits in FEAR 2 restore max health instead of a portion, and have a limit of 3 instead of 10. Which incentivizes hanging back gameplay compared to the aggressive combat of FEAR 1. This leads to a conundrum on hard difficulty where you don't want to waste your precious 3 medkits, but enemies can kill you with a crack shot at 90% health. Aim Down Sights on the AR I found really obnoxious since the accuracy can spread quite quickly even if you burst fire, and the only feedback is your shots going wide which can be missed if you're not paying attention. Shots can go as wide as the near the edge of the scope, unless you single-fire. So ADS only has perfect accuracy if you put your AR in Semi, and I didn't test a lot with the SMG. It feels that weapon accuracy was a lot more manageable in FEAR 1 compared to FEAR 2. Accuracy is a personal gripe for me, but leaning's removal, and the changes done to medkits are a pretty huge deal.

To easily beating the campaign and getting the hard completion achievement you could always reload the last checkpoint before finishing the chapter, exiting the game and changing the difficulty settings to hard and it did work at least on 360. A sometimes necessary cheese for the game at certain points in the campaign.

On the enemy A.I. in Fear, both the original and its sequel, I can say they are virtually identical. The source code for the original F.E.A.R. and its SDK were released a while ago, meaning a. we can look directly at the code and understand how complex or "intelligent" the A.I. in the game was and b. the map formats are so similar between the games, that F.E.A.R. 2 maps can be opened (but not function) in F.E.A.R. 1's map editor. The original F.E.A.R.'s A.I. are pretty "dumb" or simple, they on average have 12 or so goals (F.E.A.R. uses Goal Oriented Object Programming so goals determine behavior) assigned to them on average; these goals tend to be pretty simple, such as attack, suppress, flank, grenade, announce, etc.. However, that is where the intelligence, or the illusion of it lies. These goals are so simple, and thus less intensive on the CPU, so that each active object, or enemy, can reevaluate or calculate its actions 3-5 times for each goal before acting and then selecting the action that will produce the best result, usually player damage. For F.E.A.R. 2, seeing as how map files are so similar that they can be opened between games it is very unlikely the A.I. algorithm has meaningfully changed, however if you take a gander over to task manager while running F.E.A.R. and its sequel you'll notice that F.E.A.R. 2 has about 40% more GPU usage, while having almost half the CPU usage compared to the original F.E.A.R., meaning that: most likely due to the weaker CPUs of consoles that F.E.A.R. 2's A.I. are performing far less calculations on their behaviors, by my guess 1-2 calculations at best, thus producing the perceived difference. TLDR; it is unlikely F.E.A.R. 2's A.I. is "dumber", or less complicated, instead they are just performing simpler calculations causing less interesting, or "correct" behavior compared to F.E.A.R. nor is the difference in behavior likely to be a product of level design.

      5. they went call of duty way of appealing to retarded kids with bajillion explosions and loud noises - blike that hated by almost everyone section where you are stuck in a turret and shitty song plays while everything explodes and ai characters cheery on.

I was replaying FEAR 2 and the whole series when this video was uploaded, came away thinking FEAR 2 is easily the worst. Yes, I would gladly play Perseus Mandate (which I really like) and F3AR (much faster-paced, better guns, melee is usable again) over it. FEAR 2 is a decent enough shooter, but it has none of what I enjoyed about the first game. You can't replay the same fight over and over again and try something new, you're basically going to mow everyone down with the assault rifle every time. No trying to take everyone out with melee, throwing an explosion and watching all of the physics effects, blasting enemies in half with the shotgun. Just trudge through endless hordes of dudes with guns.
The horror, terrible. Who thought the whole thing with Keegan wandering around making pitched-down humming noises was a good idea? That whole Still Island sequence is what took me from "FEAR 2 is alright" to "FEAR 2 is really stupid."
The story, what's going on here? Armacham were a relatively ordinary technology company fulfilling a contract from the government, the game even had a Metal Gear Solid-style stinger. ATC Security were regular albeit extremely dedicated security guards; they even had worse weaponry than and were clearly outmatched by the Replicas. Now Armacham lords over an entire city, have literally an army of high-tech soldiers and military equipment, and the government contract plotline is never brought up again. Armacham apparently did those insane experiments for funsies/ Harlan Wade being nuts. Vanek (and Stokes) is the only person with a sane reaction to all of this nonsense and is the best thing about the game.

First time I saw FEAR 2, was when I visited my local shop for pirated games, films, cartoons and other bits of media.
I remember the very ending scene playing on the cashier's screen: the bit where you place your hand on a pregnant woman(?)'s belly. I went like...huat the fuck is that?
Still haven't played it. But I will one day do it. Got the fears on gog for cheap so they will be mine soon. But damn, I kinda miss that place. Closed down a few years ago. I mean most of the pirated games i bought either 1. Never found their way on my PC, 2. An error prohibited them from being installed (and I did not know enough English back then to figure it out.) 3. I started the F.E.A.R. series with F.E.A.R. 2 and have very fond memories playing this game. It was a nice horror FPS game with a great soundtrack and several memorable encounters. Visuals were particularly good and gave more realistic vibe than the first game, some features were simplified - like the usage of flashlight - but I wasn´t disappointed at all. The Reborn add-on should be longer, but who cares? I was disappointed with F.E.A.R. 3 that brought up the obnoxious cover system that limited freedom of movement in that game.

FEAR2 was such a massive disappointment when I played it on release for PC. I had just replayed all of FEAR1 a few days before. Everything felt scaled back from the blood, gameplay, level design, weapons....everything. The only thing that was better was the graphics but FEAR1 has such a great look it doesn't even matter. In E3 2007 you had a preview of FEAR2 and the game demo had no glowing enemies, weapons sounded like FEAR1 and the music was better. Something must have happened because this was all downgraded by FEB 2009 release. Looking back , watching PC games being downgraded and ruined so they can run on consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 was such a tragic thing. By the late 2000s the amount of memory on consoles was nothing compared to PCs and that is why so many games stagnated.

I feel like when there is multiple console releases along with the PC release for currently that Nintendo Switch is holding developers back, especially with the capabilities the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have over the Switch. The only thing that it has over them over them is portability; however, Valve has thrown their hat into the ring with the Steam Deck. With the affordability of the Steam Deck, saying that the Nintendo Switch has a monopoly over portable game consoles is no longer valid.

I bought FEAR 2 on sale for 5 bucks, running it on my series X. I never played a fear game before, so I thought "Why not?"
I had FEAR 1 for PC long ago, but never really got to play it, because my PC wasn't powerful enough.
I like the slo-mo effects (it's fun to use) and the combat is pretty good.
But I'm realizing none of the weapons are really good in this game. Both shotguns are almost useless, the pistol is useless as well. I'm only on mission 5, so I'm waiting to get better weapons.
It's a decent game, but I see why people are saying it's a huge downgrade from Fear 1. The environments and ambience however I really like, and using slow mo and pulling off shotgun kills or headshots with the SMG is very fun.
I'm going to buy FEAR 1 on disk. Watching gameplay, it just looks like the better game. WIsh I would have gotten to play it as a kid.. I guess time will tell if FEAR 2 has any replay value. Certain aspects of the game are very fun and the rest are just.. Meh

Man, you should give Quake 4 a try. Imo, it's beyond overhated. It's one of the last few titles that Raven Software made before being shuffled off to the COD coalmines. The multiplayer was a but weak but the campaign is really enjoyable with that classic old school mid 2000s design. I forget if you've covered Singularity or not. But that was Raven's last game before COD and is also worth a look.

  • @INFILTR8US
    @INFILTR8US 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I used to hate this game, but it grew on me, and now it's one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I replay it at least once a year. The ending is DARK.
I never understood the hoopla over the AI in FEAR, I always killed them all before they had a chance to "shine". All of the combat "arenas" were just two routes with some opportunities for enemies to dramatically dive through windows or knock over shelves... right before I shot them to death. I mean yeah they could flank, but that's been around since Half-Life.
Like the first FEAR game, FEAR 2 was slapped around when it came out, ironically, for not being a replica of the first game. The main complaint was the watered-down melee system, which didn't matter to me, because I play first-person-shooters to shoot stuff, not punch stuff. What really bothered me was the weak story.
    But I got over it.
All you need to know is that this game is made by Monolith. MONOLITH. These are the same people who gave us BLOOD, the best first-person-shooter ever made. Monolith is one in the trifecta of FPS giants: Id, Raven, and Monolith. Nobody makes shooters better than these three.
Sure, I could go on a lengthy tirade about how the graphics have aged beautifully, the slow-mo gunplay is amazing, the level design is fantastic, the weapon animations are breathtakingly gorgeous, the enemies are compelling, the art assets are top notch, the story is basically a rehash of the first game with a twist at the end, the mech sequences completely crash the flow, and the elementary school level is scary as shit...
But all you really need to know is that it's a Monolith game.
Fun fact: When it was first released people complained that the "hard" difficulty was too easy, so they immediately patched it into a nightmare mode. Also, I'm pretty sure the game was originally supposed to have regenerating health, but the backlash was so nasty they added a heath-kit system instead. The more you know!

So you know that clip, I think you used it in your manhunt video where Chase Hall is having a.. a one way conversation / staring contest with Jack Thompson? Do you think.. do you think that was like around '05 or something maybe? Do you think maybe he put a curse on Chase Hall...? And then end result was fear 2? Or maybe that they would never be able to finish an IP that was their own ever again..? Cuz they haven't.. not one of them since maybe condemned criminal origins but even that felt halfway, but more like three quarters of the way rather than just half or.. in this case maybe the curse was like at every turn that you try to innovate or implement something you will take the wrong direction.. you will take steps backwards, at the end it's just this convoluted mess you know who knows, he was... like Thompson was like staring straight at his chest and then off to the side.. with those you know lizard people eyeballs.. which are good eyeballs don't get me wrong, full color vision and everything...
But it's almost like it's almost like he was doing math in his head possibly calculating the parameters of the ancient Gypsy curse.. and then suddenly you know he he snaps back too and is like "if you disagree you'll only burn worse..."r or something... Just you know out of the blue like like he was finishing a conversation from 5 minutes prior while trying to link it to the last sentence that he heard as he had caught some of it transitioning back into the material space. it would explain everything because it's something that I haven't been able to explain on my own hands.. yeah monolith got bought and yeah that's hadn't had an effect but, they're still kind of monolith like there's no rational equation that that makes this make any sense.. and there's always been a really logical reason why a game either came out good or bad prior for the studio.. and yet when they're working on WB games they're you know able to finish the whole game the way WB wants them to and all that nonsense and you know it's it's it's a good example of a monolith 'we did your game for you' production, which is one of their specialties going all the way back to the early days..
And usually there's been like a a staggering.. like they'll do a project for a studio and then they'll do their own project or something like that, it could just be the WB clamp down but.. of all the major studios doing game development they're probably the most open of them.. they do constant live streams they're constantly letting people do tours like they're the one company that actually doesn't mind people like getting a slight glimpse at something they're working on for fear that it will ruin everything and The jig will be up.. like 90% of the studios now, and does it turns out that might be because of the groping and drinking but you know.. like there are other reasons in terms of modern development and unlike movies where you get all those behind the scenes thing and there's always that Hollywood dirt story stuff.. you know everybody talks like especially in Hollywood cuz you're going from job to job.. ironically in game development you go from job to job but it's it's taking a dark turn, from what I can tell monolith doesn't do that..
The only way I can seem to explain condemned2 and fear 2 is they actually thought these were good ideas.. but but they were not.. they took wrong turns at every turn and had to snake their way back around and then then and then it would.. I think that Jack Thompson might have cursed Chase Hall! That rats bastard and we had thought that he had gone away after he lost his license.. turns out he left a parting gift I guess potentially.. like I'm not 100% but at this point I'm 98% what do y'all think?
If you have more evidence let me know, let's let's map this out with string, preferably yarn.

  • @ryszakowy

    fun fact:
that script responsible for enemies firing their weapons when they die can get fucked...
i first fear death meant squeeze of the trigger - weapon fired once - and weapon would most likely fall from character's hand.
considering that many weapons in first fear were firing in bursts it looked more realistic.
    BUT
in second game in all console glory... the script has weapons fired until they hit the ground OR until character hits the ground and lets go of the weapon
that's why enemies with penetrators/hammerheads can be pinned to walls and bodies will keep firing for even a minute...
    now the fun part
if you use penetrator against normal enemies there's a slight chance of script shooting itself in the head
if the enemy lands on a table or a debris or in a car wreck no collision for the weapon will occur - for some reason hitting the ground is important...
    MEANING
every single enemy that will get pinned to a wall will keep holding their weapon and firing full auto forever
until the gun hits the ground you can't pick them up
and since gun is still held by a dead enemy it keeps firing
    another fun fact:
    those bullets can hurt
and since they are supposed to fall on th ground... no recoil acts on them...
    that's right
you can softlock yourself by killing enemies with smgs near a door or stairs you're supposed to go through
and their bullets will act as lasers damaging you as soon as you touch them.
one gun maybe two is not that bad of a deal
but three of them will hurt

    Ah, F.E.A.R 2...
Honestly, always been split on the game.
I am curious what Vivendi would have done if they had kept the IP (or... well the same creators behind it had kept the IP) and continued the vivendi timeline.
    What they had in mind.
This... I dunno, this game just felt off to me.
    Surprisingly I actually really enjoy F.E.A.R 3...

    and third and final comment:
horror in the game even the overhyped as fuck elementary school is being murdered by the game itself
with excessive zooming in and out like becket keeps moving his head back and forth
this starts when the nuke detonates and never leaves
operation scene? camera jumps arong the place while lound noises happen. - pinnacle of console gaming for people with attention span of 3 seconds
alma shows up? becket is headbanging again
fox gets to meet alma's tentacles? oh god it sounded better in my head... - headbang mode on.
alma realized her dream and rode becket's "becket" literally to hell and back? - somehow becket's eyes are still zooming in and out.
it makes me think of a comedy horror where every time something scary would happen cameraman would just shake the camera violently and scream like a little girl...
