      The Running channel. My friend (who has a 12 minute mile, hates running and knows nothing about it) told me to “carb load” before a 5k (that’s right, a mere 3.1 miles) because I would need the extra nutrient and would need to double my carb intake the day before. Um, no thanks. My 5k is nothing compared to the 11-12 mile training runs but you never tell me to carb load then cause it’s not a race.

      I didn’t mean any offense. I used to have an 11 minute mile (and when I started running, got better.) my point was that she didn’t like running and had no knowledge of it. Sorry didn’t mean to be offensive.

      @@jasperinooo That's fine :) I've been running for four years, and I'm still not much faster than 11min mile - and 12 min miles is pretty much my chatting pace and Im comfortable seeing it on my strava!
      I have disability and chronic illness which makes running (or rather being fast!) a little tricky for me in various ways that other people dont have to deal with, but I keep at it and Im happy to be able to run at all! I've trained hard for my 11/12 min miles at this point lol
      Just wanting to point out that a 12 min mile isnt a point of badness, nor should be used to mean someone is inexperienced or has no passion or dedication. Some people are just playing with a different hand of cards! We're all runners :) Even if our bodies are a bit on the wonky, slightly broken side.

    "You don't look like a runner": My running store has a great quote from James Bingham painted on the wall: "If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day, or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run."

      That was my favorite. I don't train for races or anything. I just enjoy getting a run in. During some of the most stressful time of my life I would take a break from my school stuff and run. I easily got to a 5 k distance going that and will probably never get much further. Now I usually do 2 miles regularly. There is something about a run that I don't get from any of my other exercise routines.

      @@joyfuljaj squats is the only exercise I would say comes close to running which is a great stress relief. Nothing better than smashing out some heavy squats to really give you that release. Running does the same when you have a bad day, run faster or further or just get out to clear your heed.

      @@11bfollowme19 There's at least one nudist resort that holds a naked 5K. Always wanted to run that. It's in the north Georgia woods, and on their own private property, so I imagine it's mainly a trail run. Hopefully, with all the poison ivy, brambles, and thorns cleared off the trail.....

    I pushed my granddaughter in the baby stroller on my run the other day. I had NO IDEA how hard that was! I was expecting it to be easier! Major respect for the runners who push strollers on their runs and races!!

      After injuring my hip I spent 15 years telling myself I couldn't run. Then along comes C-19 and I decided to try a mile a day in my free time, that was 3 months ago. Last night I ran 13.5 miles and felt like I was running on air. So I spent 15 years telling myself the worst lie of all.

    non-runners: the bigger the pain, the worst I feel
    runners: the bigger the pain the better I can control my pace
    true-runners: the bigger the pain, the faster I go!!!

      I always chuckle at that one, especially when you watch the finish line of many races. Pretty much the only thing that most people have in common visually is that they're all running 😂

    Doesn't look like a runner... Yeah that one is a shitty one. I once went to the gym for a coach session to get exercise advice to do strength work for running. And the receptionist when she handed me over to the coach said "she says she's a 'runner'" with this very haughty tone in her voice. As I already paid I took the exercise advice and never went back. The coach probably thinks I've given up on running as he expected... Not true... Seriously you don't need to look like a starving something to be labeled a runner... You run, you're a runner!

    Love the advice of: "Don't run, you'll wreck your knees." It's almost like saying, "Don't live, you might die."
    The part about new shoes is a good one too. I've personally found that if you have trained in a new pair of shoes say TWICE to be precise and then using it for race day, it's just about perfect!! That way, you're still getting that extra spring in your step from the newness of those shoes without having any issues of fitting properly and comfortably.
    Finally, is it possible for one to RUN away from their problems? Always love running but the most proficient form of running (of late) has been running my mouth in major rants. Pardon the wordplay there.

    Running through injuries as there’s “ no pain no gain “ 🤦🏻‍♂️, yes we have all finished runs with injuries but to start a race /run injured is daft , great channel folks 👍

      Learn how to tape feet for support when the pain doesn't go way in a day w/ pain relieving cream - might save a doctor visit for anti inflammatory meds w/ warm & cold packs plus sidelined for weeks....

      That depends on the injury because some are unpredictable. In one 5k I was limping badly before the race, when I crossed the finish the limp was gone completely, no more pain. Another time I ran on a slightly pulled hamstring, it got better all of a sudden. Still I play close attention and will take days/months off if a problem appears like my knee injury and hamstrings, both required two months off.

      Michael Mceniff I ran a stupid half marathon with a stress fracture in my knee and couldn’t even walk for two days. That led to 3 months of no running. Not worth it at all.

      In the last marathon I participated in, during 2018, I ended up not finishing because my legs hurt so much that it hurt to walk.. I was at around mile 23.

    I agree with the running for food one. However i do indulge once a week every Sunday after my 30 kms 1500 m+ trail run. And boy do i indulge ! Basically all the food items i avoid during the week gather on my plate(s) for a mighty feast ! And i love it !

    Which is what my wife used to tell me.
    My answer, I know alot more knee replacement recepiants that needed this were due to being overweight, not from running.

      My dad is in his 60s, has run 20+ miles a week for at least 30 years, still going strong, my mum on the other hand has never run and needed knee replacement in her 50s 😂💀

      @@brianshilloby1411 Could be putting the cart before the horse. I have some minor knee issues from running in the Army because the Army was dumb with PT. They never taught us how to properly run. I ran horribly as a high impact heel striker, then I'd have to stand 6-7 hours a day in a shop with cement floors in boots and get yelled at if I sat down.
      Hell, my E6 got a knee surgery at 38. The army is just dumb about physical health. Its mostly 22-24 year olds telling 18-22 year olds how to exercise based off what they learned from their leadership when they were that age.

      My father in law always smugly asks me how my knees are knowing that I run. He’s 70, massively overweight and has bad knees himself from playing rugby in his youth.
      My knees are fine. If running was bad for your knees then EVERY runner would have bad knees when they’re older. And they don’t

    “Make sure to eat more salt pre-race to avoid cramps”. The concept of electrolytes, proper hydration and cramping seems to be too complex so just chug a salt shaker and apparently you will be right to go... Thank you for your intelligent comments about running and knee injury injuries. Improved bone density is actually one of the many benefits of running.

      The salt thing is a good point, I sweat buckets and took me 8 half marathons before I realised I need to take on some electrolytes and not just plain water, or just eat a salty snack 40 mins before race

    Being told that your nearly there 14 miles into a marathon! Also being told that running is cheap, it can be if you just run but if you enter a lot of races the costs soon add up.

      You can alternatively race virtually or try to improve the best times of other runners' over a certain segment or route. It's more flexible (not subject to any schedule) and it's free. That's one of the major appeals of the Strava app. Granted, some users are careless and may upload biking activities as running activities, activities with bad GPS data, or upload a route partially recorded while traveling in a vehicle, usually because they didn't stop recording their route with their geolocation device once they ended their running activity. The good think is that you can flag any shady activity (usually blatantly wrong) for review and that will provisionally remove the user's times recorded during that activity from the leaderboards of all the publicly-shared segments.

    Someone from my old running club once tried to give me advice on my gait based on a single photo (he had never actually seen me run). Which, as someone who used to deliver gait analysis in a running shop, was something I felt was very bad advice because you need a lot more information than that to analyse someone's gait.

    Trying to encourage work colleagues to join our little lunch time running group and already had 3 people say they cant run because of their knees! I said can you walk, they said of course, I just smiled :-) some people just dont want to exercise sadly.

      I have a ruptured ACL in one knee and a torn ACL in the other and I find running helps 🤔 go figure. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

    Really enjoyed the video, the risk of over hydrating especially amongst the back markers (very slow runners) who tend to stop at water stations for a long time and drink a lot (which is fine in extreme heat) however combined with cooler or rainy conditions where little moisture is being lost through sweat kidney failure is a major risk.

    Someone said cut out carbs for me to lose weight from running.
    Did i listen, no I didn't I love my 2 weetabix before I run, and I've lost over 3 and a half stone . So back to what I should be

    I know this is an old video but thank you SO MUCH for addressing the "running to earn food thing"!!! I'm a runner, and I've also struggled with disordered eating, and it drives me crazy when people say this or imply it around me...I run for my own happiness and not so I can earn meals, I'm allowed to eat regardless of how much I ran that day and I don't need to have a full out binge just because I ran! Of course I pay attention to nutrition with regards to my running but I try not to let the two become so intertwined that I'm obsessing about it. I think maintaining balance is super super important!

    I get the "you don't look like a runner" all of the time. I'm 6'2, 220....my RHR is 50. My doctor even didn't believe me when I came in with a hip injury from a 50K. It gets so damn discouraging sometimes.

    Did my first ever run today. C25k w1r1. Not going to lie, it was horrible. I'm so unfit. Hopefully I'll keep it up and see an improvement. I took it really slow but still felt terrible for a good half an hour afterward. Probably partly because it is freezing and took me a while to warm back up when I got home.

    Running DID wreck my knees. Until I went slow, took it easy, and built them up to handle running. And now they're fine. And I'm pretty sure they're better for it tbh

      Deidre - Welcome to the Confraternity of the Pounded Pavement. I started at 40, 11 years ago, and I've worked up to two marathons, 10 or so half marathons, and a whole buncha 10 and 5ks. It's never to late to start. And if you're new, that means you have a whole bunch of PRs ahead of you. Congratulations and have a great run!

    A very timely and well-thought video. The worst advise I have received was to run a "taco mile" (think beer mile but with tacos). I shall never look at tacos the same way again.

    Some of your acting is hilarious like 1:03 to 1:06. I can definitely relate to that scene! Also, it was great to hear that running is not necessarily bad for your knees. One does hear this a lot in the U.S. (didn't know it was the same in the UK). It would be really interesting if you had a link to the the study you mention, involving the 75,000 runners.

    Loved the knee tip. Have had multiple surgeries on knees and back and I have never heard any of my doctors tell me anything remotely close to not run. As a matter of fact the advice I get is for better recovery, oxygen rich blood flow is vital and that tolerable walks with a bit of nagging soreness is acceptable because the oxygen enriching blood flow is worth it. (That's not to say to over do it.) Love the videos, Keep em coming!!

    Related to nothing new on race day, is nothing new the day before race day either. You didn’t do your long runs having eaten your body weight in pasta the day before so why would you do it before your race?

      Tell that to the guys that run their best PRs in the 5K that you should not go out fast. Here are mile splits for a good high school runner. 5:05 1st mile- 5:11 2nd and hold on to a 5:15. You have to go out fast!

      seaturtledog yes, I run mile splits for my 5km as follows 5:08, 5:32, 5:20 for a sophomore high schooler. As a 800m runner though almost nobody runs the second half faster than the first half. normally you go for a second lap 2 seconds slower than your first lap.

      seaturtledog and I’m a 800m guy the 5km is far from my best race. I always struggle with the second mile but come back hard for that 3rd mile and the last 170m takes care of itself.

      @@ianbusche1471 That is great! That second mile is tough near the end of it. They key is to be in a pack that forces you to hang with them. Running solo is very hard to hold a fast pace. For the 800m the 3rd 200 is key. You have to feel like you are increasing the pace but usually your are lucky to hold the pace. One of my best 800 wins was a tactical race where no one took it out. Splits where 60 and 54. That kind of split was to my advantage as a 1500m runner going against speed 800 guys.

    Hi guys love your channel.
    One thing I want to say about running shoes, I like to run in Boots believe it or not but high quality ones.
    They are made in Portugal and I called rock ports.
    They may seem clumsy and cumbersome to the eye , but to say they are comfortable is an understatement!
    The souls have three layers and will easily last 5 to 10 years. I search for them online you can still buy a pair of good quality second-hand if you are very lucky.
    My point is that because they are so comfortable I enjoy my run so much more so I think it's very important to find yourself some very comfortable footwear.😁

    I started running this year and got hooked immediately!! Was running 5k within a couple weeks and going out daily. Clearly way to much to soon, especially since I wasn’t stretching or foam rolling etc... the bone on the inside of my leg below my knee cap crippled me for two weeks where it sucked to just walk!!!! Definitely good to start a bit slow. At least from my experience, a rest day won’t kill ya!

    I can relate to nothing new on race day. I've tried various gels and the sis ones are for me, non caffeine ones. I did race to the tower ultra marathon (walking) in 2018 and on a pit stop I picked up a gel. As it was a boiling hot day it was a hydrate one, so I chowed it down not thinking. My God was I wrong. It hit my stomach like a train. It had caffeine in too which didn't want until the last leg of the race, it's my fault for not reading the packet, but those ten miles or so till half way pit stop were terrible. I contemplated finding a Bush to relive my bowels but it just wasn't possible. So instead of using the half way pit stop to get my feet strapped up, I spent it on the toilet! So the moral of the story is correct, NOTHING NEW on race day! Love the channel guys.

    I'm an experienced runner and have ran at many national and international events. Starting out fast is something that you should do and studies show that if your an endurance runner the first 40m of a race will have no effect on the rest of a race. In most tactical races the splits are negative but in most wr scenarios the start is always fast, like the first lap of the wr 800m was 2seconds or so faster than the second and it is proven the best way to run an 800m is with slight positive splits. Other than that i really liked the video, keep un the entertainment!

      I've seen statistics somewhere showing that even in a parkrun you'll get a slightly faster time by doing positive splits.

    great video (as always). a co-worker of mine has knee problems and always asks me in a worried voice if I'm doing damage to mine by running. I send him links to all the studies showing that I am in fact NOT damaging my knees by running.
    also, i broke in new shoes to about 50 miles before the marathon i wore them for and that seemed to work really well. think i'm going to aim for no more than 50 miles on a pair of shoes before the marathon. so i'm still following the "nothing new on race day" but they're not super broken down yet, but not super new that there's any awkwardness with them.

    I had a problem with pacing and the 2 mile run when I was in the Army. I'd tried to start off at a slower pace, around 7:45-8:00 mile for the first mile then just try to hold a better pace throughout, but I was never able to pace myself right, I'd always finish around 15 minutes in my 2 mile. I found if I went harder at the start ( not full on) and ran around a 6:30-6:45 pace for a while I did better overall.

    I broke the nothing new on race day rule yesterday at Valencia and it worked out OK, I mixed some Maurten caf 100 gels into the mix and they gave me a nice boost, ended up with a marginal PB. I guess I was lucky though :)

    Gels were mentioned and gels should be discouraged by the manufacturers by having a health warning on the packets regarding their correct usage.
    Gels were originally introduced onto the market for energy boosts post exercise, NOT DURING!
    Gels are not isotonic, which means they need diluting to be absorbed into the blood plasma.
    The only way that a gel can be absorbed when in the stomach if they have not been diluted before ingestion, is for the stomach to draw fluid in from the blood plasma to dilute it.
    That means that the blood thickens placing more strain on the heart and it also leaves less fluid that can be used by sweat glands.
