  • In 1999, Rob Cummins made a small change to his lifestyle that altered the course of his life - he gave up cigarettes.
In the almost 20 years since, Cummins has become one of the world's elite endurance athletes, qualifying for the world championships of the grueling Ironman race in Kona, Hawaii, twice.
This year he is attempting to reach Kona for the third time, after back surgery kept him away from the sport for a few years. This is the story of how a 60-a-day smoker found himself Chasing Kona.
To hear more from Rob on his journey - his ebook is available here: www.amazon.com/Chasing-Kona-s...

I had been smoking for 13 years. I gave up and started running the next day. Now I run ultra-marathons and climb mountains. I have a much better life. I will never smoke again.

I grew up racing XCO mountain biking, somewhere along the line I left school, started partying, smoking and just lost interest in that healthy and active lifestyle. Over the past year I've seen how dependant I've become on cigarettes and I barely ever train. 5 Days ago that all changed though, threw away my cigarettes, went for a run and decided it's time for change! Here's to hoping this lasts.

Odd that this video was recommended to me today. It has been 3 days since I quit smoking and picked up my first road bike yesterday. Most come to Texas to qualify because the course is faster. Not easier because it's hotter and more humid but the bike and run segments are flatter. I wish I could've watched your finish last year but I was on a bike course to Austin for the MS Society. Truly inspiring video, especially for me because I'm a middle of the pack runner/biker and a terrible swimmer but the IM is on my bucket list. I can relate to the issues you have had with training burnout and that's one of my main reasons I haven't signed up yet. Keep pushing on, you will get to Kona one day.

For those ex-smokers or those seeking to clean up their lungs. I recommend drinking mullein leaf tea. It greatly cleans the lungs of all that gunk we get caught in our lungs through smoking and other ways. Not only that but it greatly helps with a wide range of other respatory problems such as asthma and bronchitis. It also helps with kidney problems. Wish you all the best. :)

    • @Carlos-pk1hn
      @Carlos-pk1hn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@K9 1 those that have never taken this before will have their lungs cleaned. And so therefore it will make them breathe better; bettering their entire health. The body will also breath a little less per min because the lungs will be breathing more effinciently, with clearer lungs. If you have very clogged lungs from heavy smoking tabacco and/or cigarretes. Then it should be taken weekly even daily if they suffer from disease such as brochitis or regular/frequent cough. Depending on how frequently and for how long you have smoked tabacco or cigarretes should you take the necessary tea. If i smoked 2 cigarretes a day for 2 years. Then i should take it daily for some 5-6 months. If i drink it weekly then take it for a year. If you never smoked taking it will still clean your lungs from what pollution is inhaled, second hand smoking, if we inhaled debris, heavy dust, chemicals if you clean with sprays, regular dust. And it will improve your lung health and clearness in breathing. But mullein leaf tea isn't like a body enhancer. It just cleans, cleanses, rejuvenates the respitory system and other organs. Hope this helped! Sorry for the late clarification i misinterpreted your question. :)

Nice. I am 67m 52 years if smoking 2 packs a day. Quit one year ago cold turkey and have been successful, surprised me I thought I would never quit. Now have been training for the last 4 monts to get in shape for backpacking, and long range bikepacking, and do sprint Triathalon next summer.. I am a bit worried as am not making progress as I would like. Do you think I can increase my VO2 max to fuel my body?

I smoked a pack a day for 20 years and drank a 12 pack a day for several years, decided to change my life, quit both and started working out. 6 months later I ran a sub 2 hour half marathon at 39. It can be done, you just have to be willing to do a bunch of work until you get results. Embrace the suck.

A sub 2 hours marathon? Did you mean a sub 3 hours marathon?

@@youssefrochdi1994 He is being sarcastic. If he is honest, and he did do a sub-3 hour marathon, I'm thinking that smoking could be a good prerequisite for becoming an endurance athlete. LOL
It is interesting to me how variable the effects of smoking seems to be . Smoking does not really seem to be bad on some people. Maybe it depends on your overall health and attitude as well.

Smoked a pack a day, quit 17 days ago. First sprint triathlon in 6 days.
I have literally swapped my addiction to cigarettes with exercise and I feel so much better for it already 💪🏾

You know to be fair I'm nothing to impress about compared to this guy. But I smoked a pack a day from when I was 13 to about 17 years old. I started running when I was 18 15kg over weight etc i quit smoking as running made me see the impact of smoking on my health and in two years I was running a sub-40 10k; which I think is pretty decent!

@@PoetWithPace that's very nice of you to say, I am very grateful I took up running as otherwise I would have still been a smoker now. As the guy said. If your a smoker you can only be a smoker. And of course I put a lot of hard work in with diet and training, it wasn't as straight forward as just quitting smoking. Super grateful I cut the habit. It could have costed me my life I'm sure.

@@cnay2983 indeed it could of and you have turned it around. I have only been running a couple of years and know enough that anyone running around your time for a 10k means a lot of dedication and hard work has gone into it. keep going! Running is a great habit!
