@@OneBrokeBloke With Subtitle Edit, you'll only be able to get the subtitle file as a separate file. As for MkvToolNix, you can save the video, audio, or even subtitle individually. @@OneBrokeBloke - I know you asked a year ago, but just in case you're interested... the MKV Toolnix GUI programme doesn't have to use any compression (it's in the settings) when you save your file into MKV. You can add or remove subtitles easily with this programme. All audio and subs pop up in the programme when you drag the video file into it and you can uncheck the ones you don't want to keep. You can name the tracks of the audio (ie: Commentary) or subtitles if you wanted to. If the video file already has a subtitle in there and I don't want it -but want to add a new one, I add the video file first. Uncheck the sub I don't want and then add the sub I do want. That way I am not getting the subtitles mixed up. The same idea proceeds for audio if you want to add a new one and remove the old. This programme will also convert all other video files into MKV without having to re-encode them... and done within minutes!

I'm having difficulties trying to extract the subtitles from the movie "Yummy". The subtitles are there when playing it through VLC. When I open the file in Subtitle Edit it shows timestamps but no text. I can't play this on my TV either through UMS. UMS reports the subtitles on the TV as being "IntSub:PGS:English" if that helps any. Subtitle Edit shows them as "S/HDMV/PGS". UPDATE AGAIN. I got this to work. I'm posting this now for others who have difficulties getting the subtitles from their files. I had taken a BluRay file and converted using FFMPEG. The subtitles worked fine in VLC but not on my TV via UMS. When using the raw BluRay file the program apparently used the OCR function and not the stream to determine the text as is not perfect regarding words, letters, and spacing but it will do.
BTW... I'm Still new to this thing... In what I do in my videos, I always "write" the subtitles within "in the video". Which basically means, embeding the words literally on the "video image" which it can't be "turned off". So is this called "hard subtitle"?

That means you're working with a hard subbed video/permanently burned in subtitles. This method works if the subtitle is a soft sub or embedded to be enabled and disabled when not needed.

Is there an "easy" way to extract hardcoded subtitle, if you have the same video with and without hardcoded subtitle? Compare both videos, extract difference as bitmap subtitle overlay with transparent background. I want to extract the subtitle to append a subtitle track, rather than to have two editions.

Comparing the two videos should be possible, using identical parts to create a mask. It is not like they have been through lots different conversions and compressions. There should not be a lot of different compression artifacts in the non subtitle areas, making them very equal. The prefered option would be to convert the resulting bitmap subtitle, to text base subtitle, but just getting a bitmap subtitle would be acceptable if usable. Getting dubbed sound track and original sound track I just sync two recordings. Sound tracks are (almost) insignificant in size, but two full frame video tracks will double the size. I expect a successful bitmap subtitle extraction to be way smaller than a full frame video, and of corse text base subtitle to be even smaller.
I found this video deeply confusing. All I want to do, is to extract the closed captioning text from television show episodes, that not only shows what is being said, but which character is saying it.

When I open the mp4 file with the subtitle editing program, I receive the warning "No subtitle found."

I have a question: how to remove subtitle completely from a video?
If the subtitles are hard subbed/open captioned, you cannot remove them because it is burnt into the video. Thanks!

Yes, or use After Effects (latest 2020) version and remove the text with the Content Aware Full tool. Very tedious process.
