    Hey Ray, I've had this exact same MPPT charge controller since the early spring of 2019 in my truck camper. It's branded as an Armada 40 and I was happy to pay $259 cdn at that time. I have it setup with 2 x 300 watts 24 volt solar panels run in series and mounted flat on the roof. It charges our 2 X 420 amp hour 6 volt Rolls AGM battrries connected in series for a 12 volt system. We've used the camper year round since then from Vernon, BC in summer and the South West USA in winter without any issues. We have a 20 amp breaker on the solar side and a 40 amp breaker on the battery side. I for one love it and would buy it again. We hope to bump into you again like we did at Saddle Mountain BLM back in 2019. Enjoy you trip south this winter.

    Nice review Ray. One thing that sticks out to me about this controller is its physical size, the thing is huge, but that might be a good thing for component reliability in the long run. I don't have anything good or bad to say about it, but one test I'd like to see you do is overpower it with solar panels since you have more than anyone. I have 6 - 200 watt 24 volt solar panels feeding into 2 Victron 30 amp solar controllers and so far so good, but that is more than they're supposed to handle.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Will do, I tried 940 watts feeding the previous smaller size 40 amp controller and it performed well, it just doesn't pass any extra wattage and only maxes out at the 40 amps charging current. The SRNE have over voltage and panel wattage protections so you can over panel them. If they heat up they also have temp protections and will reduce the current until the controller cools down. Tried that when we had 104 degree weather last summer.

    Thank you Ray, always nice to see your good work and reviews 😊. There is so so much stuff out there!! How will I ever choose new batteries and add a solar panel 🙈. So much to choose from !! If I go lithium does the converter needs to be replaced? The inverter? Thank You for all you do. All this while being on the road and taking care of regular day to day to do stuff, taking care Anne :-0). You have super energy level. Take good care, safe travels. Cheers 🌞

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome, yes, it's amazing how the product offerings have grown. It is generally a good idea to get a converter that is desined specifially for lithium batteries but may not be totally needed depending on the model of lead-acid converter one has. For example, my OEM does a terrible job of charging my lithium batteries but my aftermarket InteliPower with manual boost can be used quite well for the task. So I haven't need to change. Here is a video I did explaining and demoing it - www.loveyourrv.com/lithium-battery-charge-test-can-you-use-a-lead-acid-charge-converter/ Cheers! Ray

      @@LoveYourRV Thank You very Ray. What I find confusing also is the kind of answers I get while consulting a store. The things they tell sometimes,,, The lack of knowledge. Especially back home in Quebec where there is very little of everything. Have you heard of Volthium Lithium self-heating batteries?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, can't say I have heard of them. I don't think most RVers need a self-heated battery. Just wire the lithium batteries inside the living area of the rig or add some heat to the storage compartment they are in. The beauty of lithium batteries is they don't vent any gases and can be mounted in any orientation. So they don't need to be outside.

    • @projet2907
      @projet2907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoveYourRV Yes indeed, I lack space inside. I would have wanted to leave them outside. I do hit -15C sometimes in November back home. But I will recheck under the bed by the inverter. Doesn’t it emanates some sort of electric or electromagnetic field, something that could be a sleep or brain- body disturbance?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, lots of people install the batteries under the bed. If worried you could always install some reflective metal shielding, but really a phone or laptop will emit more radiation since a person is so much closer.

    Hi, thank you for the vid, it's excellent!!
    Better than vids made by fellas in Australia.
    I live in the land down under, Australia.
    We have that controller here it's sold by a company called KickAss 20A $120ish and 40A $190ish, it's rebranded as KickAss here.
    I have the 40A model.
    A few questions if ok.
    What size cable did you use from the solar panels to the 40A controller?
    Similarly what size cable you use from the 40A controller to the 2nd battery?
    Lastly, you answered one question, you fitted a 40A resettable circuit breaker from 40A controller to the 2nd battery. BUT you didn't mention what size resettable circuit breaker you used from the solar panel to the 40A controller?
    Cheers, Steve

    Your video is a lifesaver! I live in Thailand and don't have access to many MPPT controllers save for this one. Before I buy it, I needed a rundown in English and this helped so much. My only question: If my lithium battery is completely drained, will this work on initial startup? Or do I have to charge my lithium battery first? My original (and very cheap) MPPT controller failed and my battery drained down to 3.7 volts. Would it be dangerous to attempt to recharge the battery? Is it considered fully discharged at this point and unsafe? It does have a BMS in it for overcharging and over-discharging protection, but now I'm worried it's damaged.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best to ask you battery manufacture about that. If it is a 12V type lithium battery with BMS it should have cut off at about 10.8V not 3.7V seems awfully low.

      I have my roof panels wired in parallel versus series so need a little more wire thickness. So I have 10 gauge from each panel to a junction just below the roof, then a 6 gauge run down to the controller.

      No, it supplies DC up to a max 20 amps. Its basically a way to control a DC load. It can be set to turn off when the solar stops at sundown or set for certain hours of the day or all the time, manual switched or off. When used without the solar charging the batteries then supply the power.
      One use case is to power lights on a timer. I use it to power my tire pressure monitor repeater. I have the load set for manual operation so it acts like a switch. Cheers, Ray

      Yes, but there is also a screen you can access that will show the battery DOD in percentage but keep in mind these figures can be inaccurate since they are just based solely on voltage and that can fluctuate based on the load the battery is under. I'd look at it as a rough guide to the state of charge. To get an accurate figure you'd need to install a more sophisticated battery monitor system that uses a shunt to keep track of the amperage in and out of the batteries.
