- Airbending-- the primary element of everybody's favorite 112 year old Avatar! Despite its light and breezy appearance, airbending can be used devastatingly both with offensive and defensive tactics-- not to mention the extraordinary stealth capabilities it offers! However, there are also certain limitations to the element, such as its lack of a true physical form. I like to add in you can't see air. So everyone can't see the air when bending.
I wouldn’t say that as the show makes a clear distinction as to what the characters can and cannot see because they are able to dodge Air bending attacks,. I guess that you can say the creators of the show made the artistic decision to show us air bending while it is transparent for the characters in the show you would still have to see the ripples of the air move to understand how and when to dodge it so it may be transparent in nature for the characters but it has enough of a presence that you can easily see the attack

@@24Kam. they might just watch aang's movements and strikes to predict when and where the gust will come. for example, when zuko betrayed katara and aang at ba sing se, aang used a running attack to generate an image of himself to tackle zuko. if zuko could see that image, then he would have most likely dodged. but he didn't dodge because he didn't realize aang running at him was the attack. honestly, showing airbending is going to be a real challenge for the live action show. i bet the creators know how to do it, though, they've had enough time to think about it and they wouldn't have agreed to the netflix show if they had any doubts.

An airbender vs an earthbender is an interesting dynamic. It's hard for the earthbender to hit an airbender but it's hard for an airbender to break through an earthbenders defense.
Honestly the match up probably just depends on the two benders specifically.

@ShanaroNeasomi another reason why I think air bending had an advantage was because of how unknown it was up until harmonic convergence there have only been a handful of airbenders so people haven't been able to study and find weaknesses in them with such little exposure

@@mrjordan7304 only 5 people learn to do it. It is only because waterbender is most of the time someone that is with great community sense and compassion for others that is why they don't do it. Katara doesn't have any family that can bloodbend but she can it is prove enough everyone can learn it, but because other than moon, waterbender derive their power from love that is why the only non criminal who is katara use it and cry sadly after using it to save aang and sokka.

Remember the final episode when aang is in the avatar state angry pursuing ozai, aang destroy that mountain rock with airbending. That shows me how strong air bending really is, but taking note that aang is really a powerful and master of an air element air nomad, that in the avatar state it really amplifies a one's element that the flaws weakness of air to earth rock is neglected.
Also, being in the Avatar State means he possesses the skills of over 10,000 years of Avatars.
Like fire benders are weak to water, but skilled firebenders can bend lightning, which is strong against metal and waterbending
Unlike water, earth, and fire, air is always available and can be deadly. It’s probably good that most airbenders use a defensive style of fighting instead of offensive.

@@24Kam. Or characters are basing there dodging on the movements that Aang does as some of his attacks can be predicting based on the moves he does or the direction he seems to be aiming for

I get what you're saying, probably my fault for bringing up cans, but air is made up of various particles. When compressed enough to, say, slice a rope, those particles will become visible.

I think another strength, although dark, is that it is rather unpredictable; since Aang was the last airbender, it was difficult to know what he would do, due to the lack of knowledge on airbenders.

I feel like the air nomad culture could also be a weakness considering they never really dove into the offensive abilities of air like Zaheer being a assassin showed different ways for air to be used like aang would never suffocate an opponent or achieve flight

You forgot to mention the main advantage, unlike other bending elements, Air bending cannot be seen by opponents.

Airbending is the most OP:
-There is oxygen in water, meaning that if the oxygen is what the Airbenders are bending, they should be able to bend the air WITHIN the water.
-Fire REQUIRES air to thrive, so a very skilled Airbender should be able to bend the fire as well.
-Some earth is hollow or even has air and other particles trapped in it (such as fossils, so a very skilled Airbender could potentially bend rock.

i would like to argue the water is the most op.
- in the episode where Hama shows up she shows katara that water is literally everywhere. the earth is 70% water vapour so even if the bender doesn't have a water bottle with them they can just pull it out of the air.
- water can put out fire, this one is just elementary.
- and as for earth, all i have to say is mud.
ALSO, with enough force water is strong enough to cut through steel.

bambina I mean considering the huge majority of water benders can't bloodbend even during a full moon I'd say it's balanced.
air is hands down the most versatile element, closely beating out water. there's an enormous amount that a creative mind could do. remember that canonically the last step an airbender has to take on their test of mastery is create and perfect a brand new technique that will be recorded for generations to come. which means that airbending will perpetually evolve.
Personally, the raw versatility and utility of water would be my choice if I had one. You have enough force to knock people off their feet, the ability to freeze it to change the environment as necessary, as well as high-precision ice shards like Kuvira (which I’m a little disappointed were never a thing in Avatar) and it provides enough mobility to avoid attacks. You pretty much can’t go wrong with it. That’s ignoring its subsets of bloodbending and healing, which might be the most OP in the series. Air would be my second choice, as it also provides some cool options as well, with faster attacks and higher movement capabilities. Fire and earth are just too friggin’ straightforward that I wouldn’t want to be either one (though my restlessness would beg to differ)

Also, airbending, although visible through animation, is demonstrated to be invisible in that reality, which gives a huge advantage and makes the opponent blind to the motions.

Realistically, since winds and air movement depends on heat differences, a skilled firebender should be able to redirect or even severely weaken an air attack

Aang, along with Laghima and Zaheer, can fly as well. We see him levitating the whole time while he was fighting ozai in the avatar state. I'm pretty sure he can only do it in the avatar state, but nevertheless he's only using air to propel and levitate himself in the fight.

Airbenders CAN regulate their body tempuratures, but advanced firebenders can too, like when zuko got locked in a freezer he learned an airbender-inspired move from iroh, and heated himself.

And last, in my unpopular opinion, air bender can make an air disappear. then, they make void like out of earth (space). So, high technique of air bending is void bending.
You could call the air sphere the Atmosphere technique. Also, I like the fact that airbenders can casually chuck a tornado or hurricane your way.

I found that airbenders are the most powerful because the can bend water and fire... think about it water is H2O witch has air in it, just and earthbenders can bend metal. And for fire, fire needs air the be kept lit right and to start and you can control it you give it air or take air. AND AIRBENDERS CAN FFFLLLLYYYY!!

Theoretically, if Airbenders could use their abilities to create shock waves or even explosions similar to Combustion bending then it could bypass one of the biggest weaknesses, lacking strength against solid objects (i.e. weak against Earthbending).
