- This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the ladies their flowers. We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women artists, from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths.
Before we start, a warning, this concert includes a song about suicide.

Tierra Whack and her band she dubbed "The Big Backs" might go down as having one of the best Tiny Desks in history. Why? Whack manages to keep all of us on our toes, pulling endless tricks out of her bag.
Her Tiny Desk performance gave playful, grade school shenanigans: Whack wielding a giant Ticonderoga No. 2 pencil, the band throwing balls of paper at each other, Whack tossing paper airplanes into the audience and a super special appearance by the Phillie Phanatic. “Y’all know I gotta keep it Philly. I bleed green. I bleed red. Anything Philly is all me. I had to bring a piece of home with me,” Whack says after inviting the Philadelphia Phillies mascot behind the Desk for “MOOVIES.”
Whack has been an invigorating presence in music since releasing her debut mixtape Whack World in 2018. At the Desk, she performs fresh arrangements of the biggest cuts from that album - “Flea Market,” “Pretty Ugly” and “Hungry Hippo” - before traversing an array of songs from her newest release WORLD WIDE WHACK. Whack and her bandmates are so locked in, it’s hard to believe that this performance is her first time fronting a live band. Aside from the tasteful arrangements, creativity and synergy, I especially love how each person behind the Desk lets their inner kid out to play.

Funny I have the feeling that she might've been a solo act when she started, that's not a dig, I really like her stuff, maybe it was the shortness of the cuts or something but I wasn't super surprised when she said it.

Basically due to politics- They claim she’s stuck at her label, Interscope Records because she compares to Missy Elliot and they don’t want any overshadowing of Missy. Kinda of like how a lot of female artists were stuck with the labels on Beyoncé’s rise like the female artists before and around her DreamGirls era.

i have wondered if her career has maybe been a little clipped by the format of a lot of her songs? they're often incredibly short, like 1:30. i can't think of anyone in pop music making songs and albums in the style she does. she is a fantastic artist.

But, the title was "Jaguar Destorys Jill Scott" watch at the time mark 10:48. I'm glad she brought Whack up, never head of her but, her music is true and original and GOOD❤️❤️.

I am grateful for finding this artist. Her music is so refreshing, funny, funky, honest, fun and an overall good vibe. Not many artist I can listen to each and every song in a whole. She’s so underrated and I think better than like 80% of the most popping artists out. She can actually rap and sing and writes her own stuff !!! I’m such a huge fan !!

I remember finding out about Tierra Whack from watching a Billie Eilish interview regarding some of the artists she was listening to at the time. I was completely blown away by Whack World. The imagery, the storytelling. I then dug through everything she'd ever released and enjoyed every piece. Then she releases R&B, Pop, Rap? and now World Wide Whack and I've enjoyed every bit. She slam dunks every feature she's ever been in on top of it. She has such a range and could find her place in almost any genre and make it hers. I genuinely hope she starts getting more recognition. ❤️
