I totally agree with you . Especially when you get rid of make up , that leads you buy more and more . And that cycle will never ends .. I rather to enjoy what l have and play with my make up . And panning make up actually gives you joy about what you have ..
I wish people would just include/ use/ talk about discontinued items they love. Like it’s okay if we can’t get it!! We’ll live!!! Lol 😝 limited edition items hold a special place in our heart 💖. Great video!!
Project Pan videos are my absolute favorite, not because of the ‘progress’ but because they are essentially the antithesis of the overconsumption mentality and so focused on the joy and versatility within what we already own. Loved this video, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I love duping videos, shop my stash and project pans. I'm not that interested in tutorials, because I don't really need anyone to explain the steps to me, but I like grwms, generally I just like to see people apply makeup they already own and talk about other things, not just the makeup they're applying. I like anti-hauls, but I prefer "will I buy it" videos. I'd love to see more reviews that have a comparison aspect, as a regular consumer that can't try every new release, I really like to know how something new compares to something I already own, just saying something is good or bad in a review is really unhelpful. I'd like to know stuff like "this formula feels/performs similar to brand X", "this is a very beautiful product, but this drugstore version is just as good", "if you're intrigued by this shade, here are three more products that look just like it" etc.
So many of these (both negatives and positives) are why I primarily watch smaller channels. I just feel like the focus is different and more in line with how I shop and live.
Absolutely!! Smaller channels don’t get much (if any) PR and a lot of us can’t afford to throw so much money into making content so we have to get creative! Lol! 💖💖💖
Yes to all of this! I wish more beauty TH-camrs would stress that very similar looks can be achieved with a variety of different products, even ones that aren't close enough to be considered dupes. I put this disclaimer before all of my products lists - Please don't feel any need to use the exact products as me should you choose to recreate any look on this channel. I provide a list of products used to serve as potential recommendations for those who need replacements and so anyone who wants a better look at particular shades can search for it online.
Another thing I would like to add- beauty youtubers who put affiliate links and don’t even mention what product brand and “shade name” the link is for but a just a generic word like eyeshadow, lipstick etc. They are forcing you to click on that link to find out what they are wearing on their face! This video was a great idea btw. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This is exactly what I'm trying to promote as well, smart consumerism. I'm glad you did this video because so much of it needs to be said. YES, people decluttering just to declutter or to make room to buy new products drives me crazy!!! Wayne Goss is one of my favorites for makeup techniques.
@@ChicGeekMakeup The very term “declutter” seems too tidy when I imagine most of those decluttered items are headed straight to a landfill! 😩 I know some people make an effort to donate what they can or share with family and friends, but I have trouble believing most of that stuff doesn’t end up in the trash. I get environmental anxiety just thinking about it and I can’t watch declutter videos for that reason. Great job covering this topic! Thoughtful consumerism for the win!
@@canolava This is exactly how I feel about declutters. I do not enjoy watching them at all and really don't like waste of any kind if I can help it. I will share with friends or family if they ask for something I have, but other than that I make it work. Frankening is my friend. lol
The "its discontinued, so I can't use it anymore" reason for decluttering is just plain stupid and wasteful... To be truthful, I have been watching YT beauty content less and less often. Another thing that annoyed me was this weekend when the Sephora sale started, every single youtuber (I refuse to call these people gurus, they are makeup enthusiasts) I follow did a "Sephora sale recommendations" video, full of undisclosed affiliate links. It was disgusting to see my feed that day, and no, I didn't click on a single one.
Thank you for discussing these topics. I had to check myself recently. I own 15 new-ish palettes. There's no way I can use those up, but I still feel like it's not enough. It's crazy to think that I have gotten sucked into the consumerism so heavily.
I agree here since I started being obsessed with TH-cam makeup videos I have definitely felt like what I had was not enough even though it was plenty more than I could ever go through and now I have become completely immersed in buying more than I can afford just to keep collecting the next newer and better products even though I don’t even have a channel yet I own two Alex drawers and several acrylic desktop acrylic organizers to hold all my makeup!
I’ve added Rephr to the list of products I won’t buy. I don’t like how every TH-camr is given their brushes for free and now they are pushing those brushes. Morphe, Colourpop, Rephr, Gerard cosmetics, Midas, Kaleidos. Sorry not sorry but when every TH-camr is given these products for free, why should I spend my money on these items? I get it’s important for you to get PR for your channel to grow but I hate how hard these brands are being pushed. It’s just a turn that off!
I thought I was the only one who noticed. Even my most trusted aren’t disclosing it’s an ad. Now if they have a code I’ll know the brand told them to include it.
I love Anti-haul and shop my stash. I feel they are very positive, and realistic. Like you said many people that watch youtube can't buy every single item. Plus if you have like 20 palettes I can guarantee , you can dupe any look. There is not so many colors in the rainbow. We keep buying the same colors over and over with different names on them. Love this types of videos!!!! 💚💚💚💚
I really appreciated this discussion on consumerism, and I used to be into huge PR hauls and everything but I have discovered that I much prefer project panning, shop my stash and anti hauls format; they seem way more realistic to a standard consumer like me :)
I feel like my makeup buying has gone from that extreme of buying EVERYTHING and now I’m not buying hardly anything. I obviously keep up with the new releases but I’m not buying as much as I was. Great video!!
I absolutely get the importance of decluttering and no one should have makeup that has gone bad or doesn’t work for them but I do find it absurd to get rid of so much makeup just so you can get more. It’s so wasteful and you cannot just donate. A lot of places don’t take used, swatched or open makeup. If you’re not changing your habits going forward, I don’t see the purpose of decluttering. I literally saw a TH-camr recommend and rave about a product in November/December to turn and around declutter it by February and their justification is that they never use it or only swatched it. Really? You were just saying how much you use it and how I should get it a few months earlier. Just find peoples motivation to decluttering suspect. I guess people should do what they like but they are also pushing some very negative habits!
I did buy a lot of makeup a few years ago when I got into makeup and I watched loads of youtube reviews. Now I know what I like and what works for me. I didn’t buy any makeup this year and felt really inspired by all the panning video’s. Also the video’s of Too Much Tash made me realise how long it takes to use up a product. There are some small youtubers that buy a lot of makeup, but it’s there hobby, they just love makeup. They really love their drawers filled with products and they don’t care that they will never finish these products. Some people collect swarovski, barbie dolls, lego and they collect makeup and enjoy.
I totally agree with what you’re saying! One thing that I will add: it has always bothered me that TH-camrs in declutter videos will get rid of things just because they are limited edition. However, in the past few months I have noticed that any time I post about a product that is no longer available I get several comments about people being disappointed that they can’t buy something and it’s like...... I don’t know, it’s just kind of exhausting to have those conversations over and over. So, I feel like I have started to have a fraction of understandIng of how these really big TH-camrs feel because for every one comment I get, they probably get 100 and it kind of wears you down after a while even when you only get three comments of people saying, “I’m so upset that I can’t have this; it’s not fair.” Like, obviously people should be adult and not complain like it’s my fault that they don’t have something but it does wear on you when you’re an empathetic person.
Exactly, I do my own research on skincare and its ingredients. I never go by an influencer’s skin type. We all know people that have perfect skin even without skincare and some people have blemished skin even with the best skincare. It could be genetics, age, diet etc. So many variables that go into skin appearance that it can be hard to pinpoint. It is trial and error to a certain extent. I know vitamin c, retinol, weekly exfoliant and ceramide moisturizer make my skin look amazing so unless a new product is similar I will not deviate. Great video and discussion about smart consumerism.
I think i have moved away from some youtubers for some of the reasons you mentioned, i just hadn't thought of it that way. There is one person who i think is lovely, but i haven't watched in a long time because most of their videos are first impressions on very high end products that just don't make it onto my radar, and less on tips and techniques. I find myself drawn more and more to panners who have embarked on no and low buys who have got to the point that they have already got a lifetime suppy, and find it much more satisfying to watch someone move products they have for 10 years out of their stash by actually using them up
I'm loving your content as of late! I agree with all of your points. It was nice that you added good points as well as bad. The shop my stash and panning videos are the ones I seek out other than commentary videos.
Agreed! I don’t like it when TH-camrs declutter every limited edition or discontinued products, which they love and want to keep it. First, if you’re gonna declutter them anyway, then don’t buy limited edition products. Second, if you really love the discontinued products, you SHOULD keep using them, and that way the brand will notice their consumers’ opinion and might bring it back! I LOVE shop my stash and project pan videos. For tutorials, I love Denitslava. She's so sweet and talented. I don't have that much lid space, so I can't recreate her looks. But I did learn some useful techniques and enjoy her videos.
I think Will I Buy It videos are fun but I agree with you. Beauty Community focuses too much on new releases and those videos have made it worse. That's why I love panning community and channels that focus on smarter consumerism, like Elle S, Sarah Rose etc. Off topic, I love your blouse!
Thank you for this great video!!!! How true about a finite number of colors!!! Too many people are trying to keep up with TH-camrs and they forget that some of it is PR, some is funded by affiliate links and some is purchased specifically for the YT channels and not just personal use. I am excited to get more into Shop My Stash and Project Pan. I have done a little panning on my own and once I started my channel this year, got into it a bit more :).
I was never someone who bought a LOT lot, but whenever I would find something I loved I'd be rushing to look for a dupe (if it was a color in a palette) or get a back up. Truth be told I never needed it. I still have a 6 year old palette (for sentimental reasons) and the shade I thought I had to rush and find a dupe of, is still there. With pan, but there's still a lot. I was about to fall into the same habit with an ABH shadow but I have yet to hit pan on the one in the palette which is crazy. No more backups for me lol
I love this video!! I’m starting a makeup no buy and I really needed to hear all of this! Love your channel and all of your different project pan projects!!🥰
I hate it when ppl declutter make-up bc it limited edition or discontinued. As you said, most everything can be duped, & I love dupe videos. You made some great points, Ioana, & I totally agree with you. Stay safe, Beautiful! TFS! ~ Nona
I really love your channel. I have been focusing on project pan and uses in my own life. I of course love makeup and might want to buy, but understand how long it take to finish makeup.
Hi! 💁🏼♀️😃 I’m so glad I found your channel!!! Actually, my husband stumbled across this video and told me I had to check you out and I’m so glad!! We were literally having this conversation last week because it’s such a catch/22 as a Ytuber and I was saying these same things to him, he understands and is glad I don’t buy ALL of the makeup! Lol!! 🤣🤣🤣 But seeing a channel like yours is so refreshing and I know there are people that have regular collections and appreciate content like this that isn’t so throw away in such a consumer oriented society. I am getting more and more comfortable with the idea that I don’t want to be a super consumer, even for TH-cam. Keep up this great content, we need more like you! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! For some reason I never saw this one. You made really good points and most are exactly what I have been feeling lately. The constant new, new, new from some channels has really turned me off lately. The declutters just so they can buy more is so wasteful. I like seeing videos where products are used more than once, rather than used once and you don't see it again until a declutter, if that sometimes you never see it again. I personally don't have the money or space to buy everything, and even if I did I don't want to.
I know, I'm very late to the party, but still, you make such good points. I totally agree with you and sometimes I just need to hear it in a video like this. Love this video, you did great!
New subbie here. Behind The Vanity recommended your channel and expressed positive suggestions to watching your videos..You are so correct about You Tubers Consumerism and how it can be just too much to watch or to even consider purchasing ....your speaking the absolute truth..great video!!
This was great! I really appreciate this type of content. 🙌💜 Although I definitely differ in that I LOVE when channels steer away from using and promoting limited edition items in their videos. The whole concept of "limited edition" in the beauty community just makes me feel icky. Rather than developing and releasing products that can become people's long term staples, brands play on our FOMO and continue to pump out limited edition stuff so we'll feel like we have to buy it right now, or buy back ups so we won't miss out. It's so gross to me. Any small difference that beauty influencers can make in continually shying away from those products is a win against "The Man" in my book. Lol 😜
A toxic effect many youtubers made me feel is talking about limited edition products in a way that makes me feel bad for not buying them..I didn't buy those products because I don't have money! This made me feel like I wanna buy every release before it gets disconinued so I don't feel bad! I ended up unsuscribing from few channels and deleteing instagram!
Just to be clear I don't mind if a youtuber uses a limited edition product I don't like when they make me feel bad for not owning them by saying things like "this the unicorn everyone wanted it and gone!" or anything that stimulates FOMO in me
This was a very interesting video and great things you pointed out! I declutter things I won’t use if it’s discontinued and I love it sorry I’m keeping it haha
Could you please share the shop my stash channels you watch? I would be curious to watch them as well. Thank you for this serious yet informative video!
thank you! there are quite a few: Alejandra lissette, makeup with mariela, rebecca morgan. you can search shop my stash on youtube and i'm sure more will come up :)
Great video! The skin care routine comment makes a lot of sense! I haven’t done one of those on my channel yet but I will certainly keep it in mind when I do!
I hate first impression videos labeled as reviews, like the natasha denona liquid multichromes yes they look beautiful now. Bring them back up after a few months and see if they are worth the $28 price tag. I have been gravitating towards smaller channels that understand most people can't afford to keep up with new releases. I love seeing people reusing products over and over again. I have built my makeup the last two years and even a bit of skincare. I'm good I have two things on my list and it's a no buy for 2021, only replacements and a few multichromes if I do a good job sticking to my word. Once I get two palettes I redeemed ipsy points for and one of the items on my list I'll have about 15 palettes that's enough. Thankfully I like little palettes and I'm picky about face products like blush, highlighter and bronzer. I really hope we see a turn of the tide, we know the economy is being affected I'd like to see the beauty community to acknowledge this.
I don’t even watch the new reviews anymore. They bore me, and it’s the same stuff in different packages since the market is so saturated. I really enjoy the x looks one palettes, shop my stash, and what’s in my everyday makeup bag videos. As for declutters, nope. They get rid of stuff they “loved” 2 months ago, but keep the stuff that is not exactly the right shades but they want to try it again? It comes off as just another way to make a video just to get views to me. 🙄
If you haven’t seen her videos, you should check out #Natalia Lavrova. She’s doing a whole year of no buy because she felt she had gone too overboard in the past. The woman is a true inspiration. I really think you make excellent points...as much as I do enjoy watching people demonstrate new makeup, I need to be mindful in my choices. I am definitely in the TH-cam beauty enthusiast category, but no one cares what I buy and I don’t need every new thing!
@@ChicGeekMakeup thank you both ❤️❤️❤️ This video is AMAZING!!!!!!! I think your second point is SO true. First impressions just promote selling/buying and they seem to be not really about the love of makeup. Because I feel like we need more time with a product to truly review it.
I loved this! Oh yes, TH-camrs not disclosing that the products they're using in their video were received as PR, or being secretive about PR they receive in general......it's kind of dishonest to their Viewers really; even if the TH-camr isn't cognitive of that fact. I don't watch Declutters. The big ones are quite disgusting and uncomfortable to me to even watch; even if it is all, or mostly, PR that is going in the trash. And the big Declutters just always seem to be to make room for new makeup coming in. It's honestly not dis-similar to the binge-and-purge cycle of bulimia. Un-natural, un-healthy and I have no interest in it! If a YTer is reliant upon Google Adsense and affiliate links to make their livelihood, I ignore their recommendations. They have an agenda, which is to sell product. The lovely Amber F once said she got a Becca Primer sent to her. She really liked it, and when it ran out she went to purchase another one and was shocked at the price. That is the type of honesty I respect, admire and come back for more of!
Technique videos are not getting views because people understand that those techniques shown on youtube are worthless and true artists won't teach you their true techniques because that's how they earn their living.
Teresa is dead does multiple eye looks on camera while she reviews the product. If you get past her filthy language, you’ll have an honest take with well lit swatches. She’s also size positive and lip filler free for those who care. I think it’s important to distinguish if you are a makeup collector or a makeup user and which one you want to be is vital if you’re on TH-cam because so many can go broke trying to be famous here.
I totally agree with you . Especially when you get rid of make up , that leads you buy more and more . And that cycle will never ends ..
I rather to enjoy what l have and play with my make up .
And panning make up actually gives you joy about what you have ..
Yes it can be a vicious cycle for sure!

Thank you!
I agree I stopped getting backups too!
I love this video!! I’m starting a makeup no buy and I really needed to hear all of this! Love your channel and all of your different project pan projects!!🥰
Thank you so much!
Your hair looks so nice! And I love your nail color! Completely agree with all the points you made, I’m glad to hear someone share these opinions 😃
Thank you so much!
I hate it when ppl declutter make-up bc it limited edition or discontinued. As you said, most everything can be duped, & I love dupe videos. You made some great points, Ioana, & I totally agree with you. Stay safe, Beautiful! TFS! ~ Nona
😃
I really love your channel. I have been focusing on project pan and uses in my own life.
I of course love makeup and might want to buy, but understand how long it take to finish makeup.
Thank you so much!
Great video. Some of the things you are talking about are so on point. Thank you for being realistic.
Thank you!
Thank you! I agree!
You look Stunning! Your makeup skills are awesome!❤❤❤ I rather watch smaller you tubers over the bigger ones I just feel the huge ones beyond fake....
thank you!!
I know, I'm very late to the party, but still, you make such good points. I totally agree with you and sometimes I just need to hear it in a video like this. Love this video, you did great!
Thank you!
New subbie here. Behind The Vanity recommended your channel and expressed positive suggestions to watching your videos..You are so correct about You Tubers Consumerism and how it can be just too much to watch or to even consider purchasing ....your speaking the absolute truth..great video!!
Thank you so much!!
Lol 😜
Thank you! That makes sense, it’s definitely used to get people to impulse purchase or miss out!
I loved this! 👌🏼
Thank you!
Love this video 💜💜💜
Thank you!!😃
A toxic effect many youtubers made me feel is talking about limited edition products in a way that makes me feel bad for not buying them..I didn't buy those products because I don't have money! This made me feel like I wanna buy every release before it gets disconinued so I don't feel bad! I ended up unsuscribing from few channels and deleteing instagram!
Just to be clear I don't mind if a youtuber uses a limited edition product I don't like when they make me feel bad for not owning them by saying things like "this the unicorn everyone wanted it and gone!" or anything that stimulates FOMO in me
I agree! Sometimes people hype up products way too much!
Unless I really dislike something, I’m not decluttering. It cost money. I’m keeping it and using it up.
This was a very interesting video and great things you pointed out! I declutter things I won’t use if it’s discontinued and I love it sorry I’m keeping it haha
Thank you! Yes if I love something I’m not getting rid of it 😃
Very smart ideas! I didn't even know about project pan community until I started seeing your content! Thank you!
Thank you! There are so many great Panners out there 😃
Could you please share the shop my stash channels you watch? I would be curious to watch them as well. Thank you for this serious yet informative video!
thank you! there are quite a few: Alejandra lissette, makeup with mariela, rebecca morgan. you can search shop my stash on youtube and i'm sure more will come up :)
Great video! The skin care routine comment makes a lot of sense! I haven’t done one of those on my channel yet but I will certainly keep it in mind when I do!
Excellent summary! Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
I totally agree!
Yeah it is a little weird when people declutter something they recently “loved”! 🤣
Thank you! I’ll check her out!
@@ChicGeekMakeup thank you both ❤️❤️❤️
This video is AMAZING!!!!!!! I think your second point is SO true. First impressions just promote selling/buying and they seem to be not really about the love of makeup. Because I feel like we need more time with a product to truly review it.
Where are ur earrings from been lookin for some huge ones like that for a bit
I got them several years ago at forever 21
Yes very good points! Amber is great!
Yes, love Amber.
You're great too! ❤️❤️
Two thumbs up for this video!! 👍 👍
Thank you so much!
Great 👍🏻 thoughts
Thank you!
Awesome video!
Thank you!
Technique videos are not getting views because people understand that those techniques shown on youtube are worthless and true artists won't teach you their true techniques because that's how they earn their living.
Interesting point!
Teresa is great!
Great video!
Thank you so much!!
