In this first part in my video essay-director's retrospective on Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Trilogy', I unpack the symbolic power of the Batman character and showcase how Nolan utilized this essence to construct the most evocative iteration of the dark knight's origin story to date (with BATMAN BEGINS)...

I love how Nolan started Bruce's journey with him falling into a circular hole, which he climbs from in the Dark Night Returns. The hole has grown to an incredible size, but so has Bruce's strength. In the end the little boy has confronted his fears and understands that fear is not something to let yourself to be hold back, but something that loses it's power if you turn your back to it.

Missed the ending, which is one of the best of all-time: “I never said thank you.” “And you’ll never have to.”

I rewatched Batman Begins a few weeks ago, and it's such an underrated, beautiful film about Batman's inner demons. It also strikes me as the most comic-bookish of the trilogy, and I absolutely love it

I feel like I was so unfair to this movie when it came out. I remember following the new super hero hype and thinking this was definitely among the better of them at the time but its aged phenomenally well. And The Dark Knight is for my money the greatest super hero movie likely ever to be made, but we would never have The Dark Knight without the amazing set up of Batman Begins.

One of the most mind-blowing discoveries I made this year is the fact that the actor that plays Gordon also plays Sirius Black

the TDK trilogy started in 2005, and we are still talking about it in 2019. Just shows how timeless these movies are

Why do we fall? Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed this experimental analysis-director’s retrospective. It builds on the insights from a video which I edited for the ‘Jonathan Pageau’ channel last year. So if you want to know more about how the story of Adam and Eve links to the Batman, go check that one out (link in the description).

"Some men just want to make great video essays on great superhero movies." Batman Begins is an incredible character journey and an incredible telling of Batman's comic-book history. The movie literally starts with an iconic image from one of Batman's most influential stories (The Man Who Falls) and ends the same way (Year One). And it popularized many obscure Batman characters that even many comic fans didn't know existed. I started reading Batman comics three years prior to first seeing Batman Begins; somewhere around 2001-2002. I was pretty much in loop with most things about Batman and his history, but even I was not aware of characters like Lucius Fox. Since then he became one of my favorite supporting characters in Batman's universe. That's what a great adaptation does: makes you a fan of characters you didn't know about beforehand.

Batman's world is definitely complex and what struck me the most was the investigation of the character and the forces that drive him at their core. The trilogy is also notable because Batman, even with his good intentions and ever improving understanding of the world and his own self is never shown to be - sufficient. There is always something more he has to learn - something more he has to become.
