I think she killed the boy because he found out what his mother had done to his siblings. That's why he didn't say much when he came home.. And also the apples that are in the bowl or whatever represent five kids being murdered in the bathtub.. It really scared me! It was brilliant
I was half way to that conclusion, like those other children were once hers but being such a clean freak she couldn't stand the sight of dirt and the mailman was probably the father.
9:19 I think this shows the cause of their mother killing them. From left to right, messy eating, kissing a frog, unknown(but im guessing from getting hurt), getting his clothes dirty. There's also clues in what greatly triggers her anger such as messy eating, the frog, the child getting blood in the house, and finally the clothes getting dirty.
That's what I thought after she buried him. It would also explain what they had said about their sister dying after she kissed a frog; the mother for sure would have flipped.
KAY SO HERES MY THEORY: all the children or 'childer' once were the mother's children who she all killed because they were 'dirty.' You can find out how one of the children dies because of the quote, 'my sister kissed a frog once, she's dead now.' this implies that one of the children was killed by the mother after kissing a frog. (i found this out because there were the same amount of children as the number of cabbages in the cabbage patch, and because of the quote, 'Go home. We are home,' and 'It's nearly November, why aren't they dead yet?') when the boy was playing with those same children, they told him what his mother had done to them, which is why he didn't say much of anything once he got home, one the mother realized that he knew, she had to drown him. afterwards, when the woman steps outside, you can hear a quiet humming, which i think was the little boy, who had after his death, had joined the childer. If u have anything to add please leave a comment and tell me what you think of this theory! Edit: So also i have something else to add. i think that the bit where she says 'I'll make u a ghost,' was foreshadowing to when she kills him. so ya not really much of stuff we dont know but i'd figure i'd put it out there
Only issue with the theory, while as sound as it is, is where does she get the children from to begin with. The postman or adoption? May be that she is in limbo haunted by her past life. This would explain the constant greenery appearing, the children coming to haunt her, the postman (possibly the father) coming back, and overwhelming ocd. Constant ocd could mean that she neglected her family, health and passed away. She relives this constant limbo as a reminder to what she neglected in life.
The way she says “I told you not to play with those children” then “I told you not to play with those childer” at the end freaked me out! This was so well done, I love the fact that it doesn’t rely on jump scares, screaming or gore to be scary

I think mark saying "mommy" means he knew what was going to happen because most people (especially children) are at a loss for words when a traumatic event happens and the fact that mark said mommy shows that he knew, probably because the ghosts of the other kids told him.

@@noneofyourbusiness302 Well I can say that even though it seems most people think the "childer" were her kids, I think that's highly doubtful. One thing in particular that I think adds to what you said is the scene where Mark eats the snack. You'll notice his snack is phallic-shaped and is protruding into an egg, a pretty obvious symbol for intercourse/childbirth. The mother looks on disgusted and keeps telling Mark how messy it is, and then when there's a little spill, freaks out.

No, she suffered from OCD, one aspect being adverse to dirt, so she was cleaning herself of dirt and, maybe, trying to wash away the sin of killing her child.
@@chirpysangee No, that's psychopathy, killing her child, an entirely different field from OCD. You could well be correct about her under the bathwater, although I'll stick to my theory. Lol.
This was brilliant story telling and metaphors. The use of representation of the other children being his lost siblings so close but so out of reach for him. The fact that they clearly made the twist clear and hardly up to interpretation was something I can appreciate. I find a lot of short horror is left up to interpretation, which is fine. But having a clear cut twist is refreshing.
@@thelads-sd4108 At the end, the mother saw her child was just too ... dirty. So she employed an orthodox method to fix it (I’m hyping this up way too much, she basically drowned him in the bathtub and buried him in the garden). What the person was trying to say was that the frog was dirty, the sister kissed it, so the mother just had to get rid of her.
I agree . He ' s amazing ! He' s very talented. And a very cute little boy . His best scene was the one where he comes back home after being with " childer" and the bathtub scene after. That was such a good performance ! He looked so genuinely frightened . So convincing ! He realy nailed that scene !
@@miyabimiyano9455 i know i already mentioned it above but I really suggest watching Safe Haven. Its the same boy acting the main character. Hes very good
In the beginning when the boy was eating he was actually so clean tho like most kids aren't that good at eating without making a mess😂 also it hurts to see him apologize so frightened at his mother for getting upset about the food because she treated him unfairly
"Go home" "We are home" "Its nearly November why arnt they dead yet?" "My sister kissed a frog once she's dead now" There's so much attention to detail here. I mean the number of cabbage plants is the same as the childern. And the reference of pregnancy and the mail man all fit so well. I believe towards the end of the film she's getting ready for a date with the mailman . I think the childern are vengeful spirits that taunt her
@@IcyLife3956 How is your name William Shakespeare and you don't know one of the most well known story mechanics out there? To answer your question - it's subtle hints to an eventual outcome that don't seem as significant as they are when you hear it the first time. So the mom saying "I'll make you a ghost" is a hint that she will eventually actually make him a ghost, by killing him; it seems obvious in retrospect, but in the moment you hear it, it is not obvious.
oh my god. when i tell you as soon as she grabbed the little boy and he started saying mommy in a scared tone, my heart dropped. like it literally stopped for a second.
@@misanthropicisolation4013 There aren't any. Never heard of psychotics having OCD either, but that's not to say some don't, however, the psychosis would be their primary mental health condition.
So, this doesn't matter but, I think that the other kids out there were killed by her. And maybe she wants everything to be clean because she feels dirty that she killed the children, so she is obsessed with being clean and is willing to do some weird things (vacuuming grass) to keep things clean. This doesn't matter and it's a dumb thought though.
Very effective atmosphere for this one, the claustrophobic but sheltering aspect of the house, the almost agoraphobic behavior of the mother, and the camera angles all played well into telling the story. This was something Sterling-esque, a dread hanging over the whole scene. You had a sense that something terrible was about to happen, then were given the notion that something terrible had already happened, and this was just a repeat. Great perfromances by all involved, especially the young people. Special props to Luke Walford for an effective portrayal of the doomed boy. Thanks for sharing this amazing work.
I wish they had those on for the entire time they were they're, and make up ways they died to represent the animals heads. Fox can be she snuck a dirty fox into his room or something from the forest. Goat was stubborn and disobeyed every thing her mother said. Cat was curious about what was in the forest and went to explore. Bird tried to run away but was returned by a police or something.
My take on this was what everyone else’s was but I was surprised nobody talked about what bobbin for apples also means in Druid history. When you cut open an Apple it has a pentagon(in a sense) and they use to do “bobbing” for apples in a ritualistic way where during Halloween they sacrificed people. I don’t recall what for but it seems the same way in this story. She must’ve killed each kid near Halloween as a sacrifice, but also because their dirty? If you notice on the calendar there’s a cut open Apple where you can see the seeds. 5 seeds. 5 children murdered. Idk the correlation but I found it interesting.
Other people make horror films that depend on gore to be scary, but you never fail to make chills run down my spine with your amazing psychological thriller masterpieces
Its so cool tho remember when that teen kid say "my sisyer once kiss a frog and now she's dead" maybe its one of them and her mom (wich is this mom) killed her
The first terrifying part that made me jump was the fact that she actually bought a kirby. I had to pause it and get a drink to calm myself. And she’s vacuuming the grass no less. I absolutely must keep watching to see if she actually uses the attatchments but excellent so far! 👍🏾😂
This was very well done! I grew up with an OCD parent and it was hell not being able to just "be a kid". I figured out pretty quickly they were her other "dirty" children and when her current child came back "filthy" she got rid of him too.
At the start of the film her son had asked "Where do childer come from?" in which the mother replied with "Children come from the cabbage patch at the bottom of the garden". When the mother drowned her son, she buried him in the cabbage patch. I don't know if anyone else thought this but maybe because of her answer to her son's question she had other children that were murdered and buried there as well. Sorry if this isn't explained well
I don't usually watch horror because of the jump scares but Alter videos gives off an unsettling or whatever it is called just not jump scares that makes me love their short films!
@@lo-fidreamsASMR I am so very sorry! I can only sympathize with what your spouse did to your children. My dearest friend had a horrific and an absolute nightmare experience with her now ex husband and his actions, especially towards other children and not so sure of what happened to her (their) daughter. I hope your children and you are well.
This is what I love about Alter - it’s always unconventional and interesting. Like I was a little tense but the real horror was the mother not the children.
Also, bobbing for apples shows drowning connection. And the egg dipping talking about the teacher having a new baby And him asking "does she eat the baby? "
Some points I noticed: - She doesn’t drink wine or coffee. Could that be because those drinks easily stain what they’re spilled on? - She drowned her last child. Possibly because that would have been because it wouldn’t be as “dirty” as other methods?
We just want to thank all of our fans who watch every film and begin discussing it in the comments. We love nothing more than to see all of the different interpretations and ideas the films provoke.
You should do a collaboration with Crypt TV. You both bring cool elements into your videos and I think it'd be neat to see what you could do as a team.
I finally got a theory: so the apples at the bottom of the stairs mean how many kids she had killed there where 4 kids but now after she killed another there was a apple added to the bucket. When she told the 4 kids to go home they said we are home witch means they used to be hers then at the end the boy became one of the kids that’s why you hear him laughing at the very end edit:(another small detail is the frog the 4 kids bring is the frog that died ) also just so you guys know the time line is kinda messed up
and when she said " the kids come from the cabbage patch aka garden and why the kids are covered in dirt. she killed the kids and buried them in the dirt under the cabbage
why does she say its almost November they should've died already . how does she keep getting pregnant...the mailman? why doesnt he notice he knocks her up ? or that kids go missing?
wow.. incredibly interesting seeing it from her perspective because the whole time it leaves you trying to figure out what is wrong until you slowly start to realize that she is absolutely insane
My interpretation: I feel like the children outside, described as 'feral' in the synopsis, were symbolic for her fear of disorganization and overall being unkempt. She couldn't control them, so she viewed them as a threat to her son, whom she could control and keep 'clean.' When he played with them, the mother then viewed him as 'contaminated.' Thus, she kills him; which in my opinion is a sign of weakness, of not being able to handle the thought that her son was unclean. She viewed him as being permanently altered (pun not intended) and the only way she knew how to make the idea go away was to put an end to him, to her intrusive thoughts. At the end, I almost thought that she was going to commit suicide due to her guilty conscience. However, when she didn't, I wondered how many times she had repeated that process. Again, just my interpretation, so who knows knows.
Hey there, I like your interpretation, especially with the symbolism of being unclean. You're a smart 14 year old. Maybe not mention age because there are some scary people out there who now know your name and age.
exactly, and there's alot of possibilities that the mailman COULD be the father of mark, and also the other children. if so, WHY was he not concerned? like WHO are these kids?
I feel like the fact that this short is exactly 17: 00 minutes like on the dot is what makes it even freakier like this girl is vacuuming GRASS and I think that the time really adds to it

Some points I noticed:
- She doesn’t drink wine or coffee. Could that be because those drinks easily stain what they’re spilled on?
- She drowned her last child. Possibly because that would have been because it wouldn’t be as “dirty” as other methods?
Caffeine and red wine are commonly known to cause migraines to ppl who suffer from it.

My interpretation:
I feel like the children outside, described as 'feral' in the synopsis, were symbolic for her fear of disorganization and overall being unkempt.
