Excellent tutorial !! I've watched a few video's showing the recone process and I'd like to add something that gets left out.. when gluing down the dust cap, make sure that the symbol or logo on it is lined up with the push terminals or direct leads so one set is to the left of the logo, and one set is to the right of the logo. That way the mounting points of the speaker will also line up exactly how they were and you won't have to make new holes in your enclosure. Or simply check your existing operational woofer, and glue it down using that same orientation. A very important step that ensures a clean and professional outcome. Btw- using a piece of 3M painting tape as a grab handle / installation tool is a VERY good idea ... good job and thank you for sharing your knowledge

Most brands of subwoofers don't require any kind of break in time. You can generally play them wide open straight out of the box. But it has been my experience with AQ/SQ brand, due to how stiff the suspension is you will cause a lot of unwanted mechanical noise if you don't break them in over a 10 hour period. Which means don't play below 35 hz wide open on them in the first 10 hours of play time.

I am getting ready to recone a zv4 but sundown did not provide any shims for the drop in I am hesitating on reconing any help would be appreciated thank you,

Awesome video man. Would the same basic principal apply for dc audio m3 8? For some reason I keep getting a little coil rub and it's killing me. Is there a way to fix the coil rub before the sub blows?
Same basic principle for recone applies to all subwoofer brands. Coil run can only be fixed by doing a new recone.

The top carbon cap I want to reuse if/when the woofer blows and needs to be reconed. So I use a different type of glue on it. The pressure underneath would be too much if it was the only cap used with the glue I use on it.

question#1 : what if the top spider partially gets glued to the botoom while your are glueing the bottom spider? should the person just goop as much as possible on the top spider since it's partially stuck already?
question #2 : what about the spider bolt down ring? this video doesn't show installation. i followed the link the the description from the hdc318 recone which already has the bolt down ring attached. we're lead to this video , from the hdc318 , to this one which doesn't show every single step
James Falvey question 1 that is what I do I try to put a good amount of glue on there to make sure it won't lift. Question 2 that ring doesn't have to be bolted down but if you can get the bolts in then use them as extra security. The glue that SoundQubed uses is strong enough to hold that spider down without being bolted down.
AMICUSTOMS so,you use a lot of glue to glue both spiders at once? bolting the spider ring was not my question......just overall installation is what i was talking about
James Falvey both spiders are already glued together as one but essentially that is what is happening just making sure they can't lift off the basket.

I didn't see you screw the spider packs down but I swear mine are screwed down or maybe I'm wrong.
I didn't because it isn't necessary with the glue they provide from SoundQubed. The ones that come from overseas are bolted down because the glue they use over there isn't as strong.
So my question is how does the activator get to the glue if the spider is glued down? Does it only have to hit a portion of the glue then chain reaction to all the glue that touching the area that got sprayed?
Exactly just a portion of it needs to touch the glue and it will "kick" it all off and start to set up.
what brand and type of glue did you use?

does the hdc3 have the same basket as the 4? It looks like there was a smaller landing below the one you used.
I don't believe they do. The spider is significantly larger on the HDC4 over the HDC3.
+Steven Watson my hdc3 18's have two landings. the bottom landing is a smaller circumference, and its the one my hdc3 18's use. the landing above it is bigger. so I figured they use the same basket and drop the spiders down in different spots.
+Josh Hanson that would make more since, production wise. i think a lot of companies do this. i also think a lot of companies buy there stuff from other companies that specializes in making just baskets and just motors and just cones and so on. you can really see it in todays speakers. a lot of them look the same.
That's very possible. It would make sense for them as they sell their stuff so cheap they would have to keep the costs down anywhere they could.

Justin Buchleiter you add .2 to what we expect to see from the coils, which is 1 ohm, that equals what is shown on the meter 1.2 ohm.
.2 + 1.0 = 1.2
All you have to do is touch your leads together to check resistance the meter is reading, which was .2, when you subtract the .2 that the meter reads from 1.2 you magically get 1 ohm....
