I loved how they incorporated bloopers at the end credits during 90’s programming. This show was a memorable gem for that! Carlton running around the whole set was an event!!! Even when Uncle Phil made a cameo blooper on Family Matters. The audience and extra’s laughing it up during these times was such a fun treasure.
Ashley’s performance of MAKE UP YOUR MIND reflects how talented teen Black artists were at the time. You can tell how much the actress, Tatiyana Ali, and her counterparts Monica and Brandy studied pure raw talent of years back like Whitney, Patti, Aretha, Chaka, etc. Yes the comedic focus in that scene was on Will and Carlton’s antics as her ‘back-up dancers” but her look on that stage was my main focus and felt it was the epitome of the 90s youth- high vibrational smoothness with a damn good voice to match. I’m glad there’s finally a full version of MAKE UP YOUR MIND on youtube since it wasn’t available during her KISS THE SKY debut album era.
Janet Hubert created the personality of Aunt Viv, who was a main character. She wasn't just a wife and mother; she was a professor and former dancer. She was funny, likeable, and very fashionable. No dis to Daphne Maxwell-Reid, but as far as I'm concerned, the Aunt Viv role ended when JH was fired. The new, remixed "Viv" was relegated to the background. She had no outside interests, no sense of humor, she was matronly, and she seemed to ALWAYS be mad at Uncle Phil. Unfortunately, DMR's "Viv" is easily forgettable.
Yes, I felt this mini-doc did Janet a disservice, especially since it's in the public domain the role WS played in effectively blacklisting her and stalling her career (which to my knowledge, he did not deny), the role of colourism in casting a much lighter replacement and purposefully making the 'new' aunt Viv bland and more docile to counter Janet's more sharp and assertive portrayal. I feel this clip largely upholds the over-simplistic, pre-2020 reunion narrative of Janet just being difficult and bitter.

Just like with family matters, once Janet Hubert left, Vivian had no identity outside of being associated with uncle Phil and always being his sidekick.
She left exactly in the halfway point of the show. Many memorable episodes in the seasons without her. That being said, she still is the best aunt Viv and she definitely would have made the other episodes better. But it was still a great show without her.
The 🥇 Aunt Viv was the ♑🐐 GOAT. She had her OWN identity outside of her husband and just relatable on different levels. The 🥈one was so drastically different in terms of personality, no disrespect to the actress.
It's a shame, coz the lite skin aunt Viv is a great actress, She and her husband(the dad from Sister,Sister) were very proactive for Black actors union. But it was obvious They cast her for the wrong reasons. Colorism and Will Smith ego.

Did the replacement Aunt Viv have the same career as the first one?? The replacement would always be home barely going anywhere. I get it that she came on the show after the Nicky character was born so she obviously stayed home to look after Nicky, but even as Nicky grew the Aunt Viv replacement never went anywhere.

Janet Hubert is an excellent actress, but is a typical narcissist. She blamed everyone else for her blackballing and takes zero accountability for her attitude and behavior on set. I've seen the way this woman acts in her TH-cam videos and it's disgusting... especially for someone her age. She attacks anyone that uses even a smidge of her likeness in their videos and writes fake messages from lawyers telling them to remove the videos. Anybody that plants this toxic woman as a victim is not being honest or they too, are narcissistic.
Janet Hubert is not perfect, but she didn’t deserve what happened to her on TFPOB. Janet became the victim of an insecure man/child rapper who was intimidated by Janet Hubert’s talent and confidence. Janet Hubert was from the theater and was used to a more collaborative relationship between actors. Janet wasn’t willing to be Will Smith’s lackey even if he was the star of the show. Will during the reunion admits that his treatment of Janet was caused by his own personal struggles and immaturity. Janet made some bad decisions driven by her ego too. However, I remember that episode when Daphne Maxwell-Reid replaced Janet Hubert. Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff making jokes about Aunty Viv looking different. I remember thinking,”How petty.” Fresh Prince lost a lot of dignity with the replacement of Aunty Viv. The character was diminished significantly, and the show just became a vehicle to hi-light Will Smith’s talent. As soon as the show no longer served Will’s purpose he left and didn’t look back. I feel the show suffered when Janet Hubert left, and I stopped watching it. It is funny after the reunion and Will and Janet’s reconciliation, Janet was one of those people to support Will after his assault of Chris Rock at the Oscars. I don’t know what that says about her, but Janet and Will are the two individuals that are responsible for any problems on that show. 🤨🤨🤨

Janet Hubert was from the theater and was used to a more collaborative relationship between actors. Janet wasn’t willing to be Will Smith’s lackey even if he was the star of the show. Will during the reunion admits that his treatment of Janet was caused by his own personal struggles and immaturity. Janet made some bad decisions driven by her ego too. However, I remember that episode when Daphne Maxwell-Reid replaced Janet Hubert. Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff making jokes about Aunty Viv looking different. I remember thinking,”How petty.” Fresh Prince lost a lot of dignity with the replacement of Aunty Viv. The character was diminished significantly, and the show just became a vehicle to hi-light Will Smith’s talent. As soon as the show no longer served Will’s purpose he left and didn’t look back. I feel the show suffered when Janet Hubert left, and I stopped watching it. It is funny after the reunion and Will and Janet’s reconciliation, Janet was one of those people to support Will after his assault of Chris Rock at the Oscars. I don’t know what that says about her, but Janet and Will are the two individuals that are responsible for any problems on that show. 🤨🤨🤨
I stop watching when Aunt Viv left, it wasn’t the same for me.
