I remember going to Chinatown with my dad. He would take us to BC Royal Cafe and Hong Kong Cafe where i tried my first cup of coffee and their famous apple tart. Nostalgia alright...brings back alot of memories.
Back in the 60s and early 70s, Vancouver's Chinatown was awash in a sea of colourful neon, lively restaurants, and mysterious stores selling odd smelling things that were unrecognizable to us youthful suburbanites. The last several years have seen dramatic change (starting in 1995 really, just before Hong Kong was handed back by the British), and now it's a shadow of its former self. Lots of memories though. Thanks fro sharing! 🙏
They are known for their steamed buns and apple tarts. That’s what we go for. their pork and chives bun is the best. I think it’s #4 on the board. Good honest review and agree it is not the best but I still like it.
Thanks for commenting, and we appreciate the fact that you think it’s an honest review. We try to tell it like it is. Or at least how we think it is! 🙏❤️
Agreed, the steam buns and apple tarts are the best. Probably suit more Chinese tastes as we know what it should taste like and grew up eating it as comfort food.
Thanks for the info. Both our families (Rob and Laurel) would come to Chinatown regularly in the 60s and 70s, and as a kid it seemed so wonderfully exotic! It has changed dramatically in the last 10 years, and now we go to Richmond for what we call “real” Chinese food.
@@Global_Feast Still won't get authentic steam buns as fluffy and great tasting in Richmond.....people go out of their way to go to New Town to get them, but they are Chinese, what do they know?
Thanks for the tip! We’ll try and check that one out soon. We’ve been compiling a list of place to go and film next, and it’s getting pretty long. so many amazing places in Richmond! thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the comment! Most people agree with you that the baked goods and comfort foods are the strength of NTB. Who doesn’t like a BBQ pork bun??? 😉
I’m in Australian and have been eating Yum Cha since I was a teenager so over 40 years and I have been to all the different young child restaurants in Sydney but thebest yum cha was in Vancouver china town just before Covid five years ago… I like to write my restaurant by how many of the cultures as to type of restaurant. I like being in the minority
Thanks for commenting. We really appreciate it. One day we’ll make it to Australia! Over the last 5 years the vancouver Chinatown has changed dramatically. So many of the older Chinese residents have passed on it moved away, and many of the great groceries and restaurants have closed, only to either stand empty or be replaced by non Chinese businesses. Hopefully one day you’ll come back to vancouver and see for yourself. Thanks again! 🙏
Yes, you are right! We realized that after we filmed and that’s why we put in the note about it when we were editing. A little embarrassing… we try to be accurate, but we do make mistakes occasionally! At least Rob does… 😉
Historically it was the area between Hastings and Keefer (north -south) and Gore and Columbia (east -west). It’s been in decline over the last couple of decades, and most of the Chinese population is now centralized in Richmond. All of Vancouver is most definitely not Chinatown.

It reminded me of East Vancouver when I was growing up. All the Chinese restaurants were Cantonese. New town is old school.
That it is. One of the last standing OG places in Chinatown! We really miss the old Hon's on Keefer. :-(
I remember as a kid we would come to Chinatown to this place as it’s owned by a Chinese Filipino person. That was mid 70’s to early 80’s.

Try memory corner in Richmond .. Taiwanese and the decor is like that in Taiwan alleys. No reservations so show up when they open shortly

If you do go back, try their chicken mami (chicken noodle soup) and bbq pork siopao (Bao) and their coconut buns are 👌.
