Is the Logitech Mevo Core The Best Live Streaming Camera?

  • I had to give a hot take on the new Mevo Core by Logitech. This camera packs a punch but is it worth the price tag? Let's dive in!

    Ah, the classic apples to oranges comparison strikes again! 🍎🍊 📷
    Dive in with me:
    If your streaming setup is still desk-bound, Mevo might seem like overkill, but think of it as your encoder, cellular router and camera all in one. Think of Mevo as the Tesla of cameras, always improving with updates like the potential for 60fps, because they're all about listening to what you want.
    And about that NDI license? While others only look at basic camera functionality as the only driver to justify price, Mevo includes what typically costs $100, democratizing quality streaming for all users out of the box.
    Comparing Mevo to traditional cameras is like comparing smartphones to landlines. Both make calls, but can your landline snap a pic? Mevo isn't just any camera; it makes shooting content setup and breakdown easy for anyone, not just those with tech knowledge and an abundance of gear.
    Paying for convenience is often underestimated. In a world valuing time, Mevo stands out, ready to stream straight out of the box. And with Mevo's HDMI output you can accomplish 4K streaming just like the cameras you mentioned, the 1080p30 is only limited via mobile streaming but if you want to mix in even more hardware which seems like your preference then you can do it now. For mobile 4K streaming they already mention in their community group that they are waiting for more platforms to support it but it's possible and coming.
    Let's not rush to judgment. Mevo is more than a camera; it's a streamlined solution. Why piece together a puzzle when the picture is ready to go?

    • @MatsuXL
      @MatsuXL  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t disagree with some of the points you make. What you pay for is the namebrand and ecosystem. Yes there is some ease and flexibility regarding breakdown and set up and stuff just working out the box.
      I think the Mevo Start package it’s probably the better option for someone who’s getting into creation and looking for the best bang for their buck. And I say that only because for someone who’s looking for a quick easy set up and no frills, it comes with everything you need for multicam. In the case, scenario where yes, you can achieve 4K streaming by plugging in an HDMI, you mitigate the wireless functionality .
      I appreciate being able to have an open conversation and understanding other thoughts. I think the biggest thing that triggers with me is that someone brand new to content creation is going to see this and think it’s the end all be all solution whereas this may be best suited for a specific niche area of creators.

    📸 If your only use-case is sitting at a desk talking to a camera, then your criticisms are valid. But if you're recording or streaming your kids' basketball or softball game, a conference, a worship service, a panel discussion, a university lecture, etc., then your criticisms are wildly off-base - especially if you are cutting between multiple cameras.

    • @MatsuXL
      @MatsuXL  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wouldn’t you have your system prebuilt or set up once for worship/lecture/university/conferences? In most of those cases you’re going to be hardwired anyway. Well, these venues are set it and forget it where you can have a set up station almost permanently.
      I can understand for venues like trade shows are concerts where you’re having to constantly break down and put up systems. at the same time, though you’re also going to have an issue with the wireless connectivity, especially in an environment where you don’t have good signal.

    • @tlingit
      @tlingit 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MatsuXL In some situations, yes, but not all. I work at a major university; in-room setups are oriented toward Zoom calls, and are poorly adapted to live stream and event video. Being able to cut between 3 or 4 cameras via an iPad, then pick up that setup and do it in a different auditorium another night is real use-case.
      With the Mevo Core, we can cover events like this with less than half the people and expense.
      Again: you are pissing on a camera for it not being well-suited for a use case it wasn't built for. It's actually a very welcome camera for other use-cases. 🤷🏻‍♂

    • @MatsuXL
      @MatsuXL  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tlingit I’m pissing on a camera and brand that has directly aimed this for desk scenarios. Also the fact that there are other options at a lower tier/cost.
      Again, if you are in the MEVO ecosystem then by no means should you jump ship, however given that my audience is being targeted with a device like this, there are other options.

    Mevo's products have always been kind of a niche...where you need a camera with long battery life, wireless capability, and space/weight are at a premium. To use a Blackmagic Micro G2 in a similar setup, you'd have to add a bulky LP-E6 battery which likely won't have 6 hours of life, a wireless NDI transcoder like a Kiloview N1 (or a Hollyland Cosmo C1 + NP-F550 battery if you don't care about NDI), and you won't have use of the tally lights (unless you use the one on the N1). Whereas the Mevo Core has that all built in. It all depends on what your workflow is on whether $1000 is worth it.

    As a Mevo user with multiple Starts this is going to be my main camera with the Starts capturing alternate shots. Mevo users have been missing an optical zoom for many situations. This camera will work natively with the Mevo app and cameras that I already have. Most recent videos on my channel (Thrifty Biscuits-Old Bank) were shot with Mevo Core as the main camera using a Laowa 6mm wide angle lens. Another Mevo Core was using the Olympus M.Zuiko 14-42mm zoom.

    I've got three Mevo Start cameras, and honestly, they're pretty rubbish except for one thing - they're super easy for anyone to use. In our podcast studio, even someone who's never touched a camera before can handle them. I'm considering them just for the simplicity they bring. We've also got three GH5 cameras, but most folks aren't keen on learning to use them. Even though the Blackmagic cameras are the same price and way better for studio rentals, I can see the appeal of buying the Mevo for its user-friendliness. But I'm not sure if that justifies making a camera that maybe only a few hundred studios worldwide would buy. I'm curious who else is shelling out for these at such a high price point.

      I think because from my spectrum of the neighborhood I see these advertised to streaming and twitch in the gamer creator aspect. You def pay for the ecosystem and ease of use.
