I actually agree with this statement, it's a really amazing song and has two of some of the most prominent themes from the self-titled album, trip-hop and dub. Probably could have replaced Rock the House as a single, that was certainly somewhat of a weird choice for a single. Great song, but Sound Check would have been more appropriate. This song is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Not even kidding. It's as though someone took all the emotions of being passionately in love but still sort of conflicted, and made them into a song.
@van mannison songs, even though they can be written with an intended story or inspiration behind it, it's more about what it means to YOU that makes it enjoyable.

That’s a powerful song and a masterpiece. It’s a fight between your “good” self (represented by 2D’s falsetto) and “bad” self (normal 2D’s voice) inside your head, you're trapped in yourself. The good self feels the “weight” and bad influence of the bad self “Gravity on me, never let me down gently” and makes him have low self-esteem and doubts “I don’t know, love is breaking”. - Meanwhile, the bad self wants to convince the good self that he is not making things worse “I don’t pull me down, on you”, but the fight between both selves continues accompanied by a violin, until the track ends with “Gravity...” with the last words being “I don’t know, love-love-love…” and then, silence. That’s the saddest part. You don’t know who wins the fight inside your head in the end.
My top (if someone wants to read it): 5.-El Manana 4.-Rhinestone Eyes 3.-Kids With Guns 2.-Sound Check 1.-Every Planet We Reach is Dead *-Bonus-* The Apprentice :^)
I imagine 2D's story in this one. 2D, with normal eyes, going to work at a music store. Then the scratchy rapping part is Murdoc who crashed his car into the store, hitting 2D and causing him to slip into a coma. Then that middle gravity part is 2D floating while in his coma unaware of time passing, then he starts singing and coming around only to find out that Murdoc caused a second crash that woke him up. 2D finally opens his eyes and they are both black. Wow! Thanks for so many likes everyone!
That would actually have been a good music video idea if the song was ever made to a single. There are lots of interpretations over the song's meaning, but yours seems like a good interpretation.
I skipped this song everytime for about a year or 2 after I bought the CD in 2001-2002. Then, every so often, I would let it play it every once in awhile. After 5 years or so, I played it almost as much as the other songs on the album. By year 10, it was even with other songs. But for some reason tonight in 2019...15 some odd years later, this song just came into my head as I face some of the biggest trials and tribulations of my life in the next few weeks. I looked at the lyrics and read them to myself and listened to the song one more time and it all became clear.
Gravity on me Never let me down gently Gravity with me Never let me go no, no Gravity I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck, luck... I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck, luck... I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on me I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on you I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on me I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on you I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck, luck... Gravity on me Never let me down gently Gravity with me Never let me go no, no Gravity I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on me I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on you I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on me I don't pull me down I don't pull me down on you I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck at winning I've got no luck, luck...
The only thing in this world that doesn't leave you or lets you go is gravity, everything else is just here for a while, good or bad. Maybe this is my interpretation since I hear the beat going "please do not fucking leave me" ...
Wow...ouch. All the other interpretations of that line are...hilarious, but inappropriate. ("I've got no ****** bacon!") Your interpretation, on the other hand, is actually very deep.
Honestly, this song could have many interpretations of it's supposed to mean, but I've decided to stop pondering over what it means and just enjoying the song for what it is. Edit: In Rise of the Ogre, 2D says that he was sitting on a roof in Jamaica at night when he devised this song. He said he was just thinking about the universe really, perhaps that's the official explanation for this song? It does have that sort of vibe, at least to me. I think it's one of the few non unsettling songs from the self-titled though, there's some pretty unsettling songs such as Man Research, Double Bass, or New Genius though. I personally view it as more of a relaxing song, one that gets away from the craziness and unsettling feeling that's prominent in quite a few of the songs featured on the album.
20 years since I was listening to this regularly, it's like finding and reconnecting with an old love... Very positive, yet such a deep dark song. I am in love again x

My first well listened to CD was Gorillaz. I would just lay on my floor when I was 10 and listen to this CD. When I listen to this as a young adult (23) it's like returning to something that is innately a part of me. I #GorillazFanForLife
Same here for me, a family friend of mine accidentally left it in my stereo system after showing me a couple songs and from then on i religiously listened to it, i think i was about 7 years old. It has such a particular sound and atmosphere to it, extremely nostalgic for me as well! 😁
It's like a progression of emotion. It starts with like a hopeful melancholy/sadness. Then its vigor/anger (?) but also content and happy. But when the cycle restarts with the strings amd beat, it's the same thing but wise and composed. Idk. Strange rant to read in the comments I know, but this piece of music has so much power to me. Edit: holy shit I was stoned
to me, this song represent someone at the end of a relation ship or in a depressive moment of his life. always behing cruch always being destroye, always fighting the voice in his head that tell him to give up in a way. I get that vibe from the fact that the song seems to be into a constant conflict. their is the soft accoustic guitard that get slowly replace by the heavy beat, but it constantly try to fight. the simple beat is an allusion actually. When Damon sing, you can here the bugs surronding him, representing his contact with nature, the real world. then his emotions take him to another darker place, a place cold and harsh, the universe, with an indistinct voice and a mechanical beat. then for the lyrics, well, we could interpret them in several ways, but basicly i think the gravity his talking about is a love interest that he is losing. but if you lose gravity, what keep you in this world? nothing. so he fight to stay with the gravity, even if that mean to continue to be crushed on a day by day base. Obviously, this is all only just one of multiple interpretation we could get from this song. I would like to know what other people think the lyrics and song represent?

I'm not native speaker in English. Please, help me to get how Jessie Daniels pronounce "pla-ace" in "I'm gonna rock this pla-ace"? I can only hear "grav-ty" or something like that.
man this album opened me up to so much. I credit the gorillaz for getting me to venture out into all kinds of genres, and not judge music based on genres. I haven't listened to this album in a while, but I am now. gravity, tomorrow comes today, re hash, punk, m1a1, etc etc. so good. imo g1 gorillaz deserves more appreciation, cause g sides was great too
my favorite Gorillaz track. This is one of those albums that every punk rocker own, and it is way in the back of the box behind the Oi comps, hanging out with Vulgar Display Of Power and the Tod Rudgren era NY Dolls Album.
Why aren't they in the rock n roll hall of fame??? They're a one of a kind and have been going for 23 (goat number, by the way) years and they have touched so many hearts and truly stand out like no others but musically and visually. Truly Gorillaz is iconic 2 d is God is a banger so listen to that one next if you like this song.
I'll never forget how listening to this song made me feel when I was younger. It hits harder as an adult, the more time passed the more scars appeared from everything I've experienced, and this song holds a new meaning for me though for the same emotion.
My brotha bought this album when it came out. I must have been around 7 yrs old. Didn´t understand a word they spoke..But dem feels said it all. Asante sana!
Does anyone know which member of Gorillaz wrote the lyrics to this song? I hope 2d cause I think it gives a really interesting view of how he views the world. He's constantly paranoid and feels that everything is out to get him that even gravity scares him; it's always violently pulling on him and it never does so gently.
(sighs) Yes, I know Damon Albarn actually wrote the lyrics, but I mean in the Gorillaz cannon. My question got answered anyways, I found a photo somewhere saying the lyrics were by both 2d and Murdoc.
+Shib00yah You might be thinking of Jamie Hewlett, who co-created the band with Damon Albarn. He isn't a musician though, he's a comic book artist and the story board artist for the music videos.
This is their best selling album the Self Titled. This is still selling now on ITunes. This is an animated band and that’s the unique selling point. This band is as big as anime
This song never gets old no matter how many times I listen to it. I definitely think it's my favorite Gorillaz song, everything about it from the bass drop, to the drums, to 2D's singing, and so on make it fucking amazing. Both from the self-titled album and out of everything Gorillaz has made.
I'm guilty...this is straight up nostalgia for me..I used to try and draw em up in my old art book..the tagging days man oh man...the digital won't let us go lol
+Sky Vettel lol mine haven't either :( but hey practice makes perfect right, get back to it and see what u can do?? this whole album just made my morning tho, its 8:17 I've been awake since 7 listening to this album and I promise I went threw every emotion. I cried I laughed I got happy sad, so on n so forth...this album defines me, and going back to it at 24yrs old is scary.....tomorrow comes today is still my all time fav tho..
+Sky Vettel it def was. I needed a dose of nostalgia. I wish I remembered this album last night I'm awake early cuz I took molly last night and saw batman vs superman lol. so music is very important to me right now.....vibez wit meh :)
i feel like phase 1 is really underappreciated. its got hiphop and rock, and modern gorillaz wouldnt exist without these bangers. we should try to get phase 1 more love!
I dont find it depressing. Chances are you were or are depressed and you link the sound to your insecurities lol. If you're happy and hear this it's a pump up mix with deep bass . But to each their own
This song and this album takes me back. I was 17. Got this album and a Nintendo GameCube for Christmas or my birthday or both. Just had this cd on repeat playing Luigi’s Mansion all day. Love it. Always will.
This song just jumped into my head just now. Great jam, used to listen to this album a lot when it first released. My buddy had an old school Bonneville, we'd cruise through town playing this and every time there was a crowd outside the local ice cream shop, he'd throw the car in neutral, turn off the ignition and then turn the key to start the car back up before shifting back into drive. It was hilarious to see peoples heads turn, just looks of, 'wtf just happened??' We were never sure if it was bad for the car but nothing ever happened. To be young and dumb. Good times.
Although I like all of their albums, got to say that the self-titled album is my favorite as it's got a lot of amazing songs on it such as this one. Plus, all of the songs on it are superb, they all are great in their own way.
Since the day i saw them live all I did was work on myself, be a better person; and lately i've been kinda low but, as another person said, Gorillaz makes depression enjoyable. Thank you for this. This is a piece of heaven in the earth...
I used to be super hyper fixated on gorillaz and I was feeling nostalgic so I went back to listen to all my old favorites and man lemme tell you that BEAT MAN
Man i still listen to this album so much, i don't feel like it came out all the way back in '01. Damn! Time has flown. So many great memories come with this album/band for me.
🔥Here's what the distorted voice ACTUALLY says: "I'm gonna rock this pla-ace" You can check it by yourself on the original sample used in this scratch; it's from "The Force MD's - Live" in the album "Old School Hip-Hop Vol. 4 B Side", as you can hear at second 00:27 of the following video: th-cam.com/video/Y6c8447jAVc/w-d-xo.html You can also check the distorted version of this sample that was used in Sound Check (Gravity), it's in the "Gorillaz - Sample Cutz", at second 00:27 of the following video: th-cam.com/video/gDPv5STi_zs/w-d-xo.html You're wellcome
So.. I know no one will read this, but I just felt like talking about the way I personally deciphered the song "Sound Check" by Gorillaz... So.. It starts out real soft and kinda quiet.. A chill smooth beat and acoustic chords.. The about 40 seconds in, the heavy bass drops and it turns.... Hiphop-ish? I'm not sure how to describe it, but it makes me think of the soft part being through the point of view of a forest sprite of fairy or spirit.. The the bass symbolizes the modernization of a city suddenly being built from the forest.. It the alternates back to a soft beat, with a bit of a strong snare beat, meaning the spirit, or whatever, is in a park in the city, reminded of their old home.. The heavy snare equalling trash or vandalism or other man made stuff (benches and streetlights) it alternates back to hiphopish... Then fades off back to the spirit.. He sounds very dismayed and sad.. Then it turns to a slight orchestral moment overlain on the original beat.. To me, it sounds dramatic, like the spirit is rebelling.. The original beat, orchestral overlay, and the hiphopish beat all are overlapping, symbolizing that the spirit battles the city to destroy it and return the forest.. Eventually fades to the beat from the beginning, the spirits song.. I believe that the spirit drove the city folk away, and tore down the city bringing back their forest home... Sorry I made you read all that..
I love how early 2000's this song is. You just could not mistake this song for any other time period.
Phase 1 has many falsetto parts (Gravity, Starshine) that fall flat in later albums or missing completely... sadly. I love his falsettos.
This sounds more like mid or late 90s too me, specially if your familiar with producers like Dan the Automator, Madlib, DJ Shadow or Cut Chemist.
Phase 1 (S/T & G-Sides) had such a unique sound and art style, and it hasn't been replicated in any other albums. I miss it.
The best comment
It has the turn tables and washed out bass that sounds so 2000's but it really doesnt feel like it. a timeless classic
I'm reading about this song in Rise of the Ogre while listening, and it says you can hear cicadas in the background when 2D is singing bc they recorded it outside in the middle of the night. I love how they have an explanation on how they got every little noise into every song.

the very intro you can hear a dog barking faintly

As an ex-addict, let's just say this song personally helps remind me of one fundamental rule: what goes up, must come down.
I wish they would teach this simple yet absurdly true concept in rehab

BoC and Gorillaz should colab
That’s a powerful song and a masterpiece. It’s a fight between your “good” self (represented by 2D’s falsetto) and “bad” self (normal 2D’s voice) inside your head, you're trapped in yourself. The good self feels the “weight” and bad influence of the bad self “Gravity on me, never let me down gently” and makes him have low self-esteem and doubts “I don’t know, love is breaking”.
-
Meanwhile, the bad self wants to convince the good self that he is not making things worse “I don’t pull me down, on you”, but the fight between both selves continues accompanied by a violin, until the track ends with “Gravity...” with the last words being “I don’t know, love-love-love…” and then, silence. That’s the saddest part. You don’t know who wins the fight inside your head in the end.
I never thought about it like that.. What a beautiful perspective. Thank you.
Don’t wanna be that guy but the lyrics are actually “I’ve got no luck at winning”.

UUuuuugh why is this band so interesting.
ATEAMT you know then the Gorillaz universe, it’s just 2D singing, right?
DisneyMagicDreamer85 that's... actually a really good concept for the song, especially as it's the bass that really kicks in.
PLEASE DO THAT VIDEO
PLEASEEEE!!!
Play it backwards I heard murdoc’s car and like BOI! It’s sad
kind of brilliant!
I lose my mind over this song.

This song should have been in that Gravity movie. It would fit so well, wouldn't it? As soon as I saw the trailer for that movie, I thought of this.
The Gorillaz Wiki stated that it says "I've got no luck at winning."
i thought it was "i don't know love is breaking"?
Ludydobry it's "I've got no luck at winning"
I'm so glad we invented gravity so that this song could exist.

I would like to know what other people think the lyrics and song represent?

man this album opened me up to so much. I credit the gorillaz for getting me to venture out into all kinds of genres, and not judge music based on genres. I haven't listened to this album in a while, but I am now. gravity, tomorrow comes today, re hash, punk, m1a1, etc etc. so good. imo g1 gorillaz deserves more appreciation, cause g sides was great too
I am absolutely in LOVE with this song!😍
my favorite Gorillaz track. This is one of those albums that every punk rocker own, and it is way in the back of the box behind the Oi comps, hanging out with Vulgar Display Of Power and the Tod Rudgren era NY Dolls Album.

its nr. 1
I discovered this song yesterday and it's already one of my all time favourites
This album is helping me a lot to deal with stress at home and etc, I'm addicted to this song and Latin Simone! 😭🙏
I listened a lot to those 2 songs a lot too
Why aren't they in the rock n roll hall of fame??? They're a one of a kind and have been going for 23 (goat number, by the way) years and they have touched so many hearts and truly stand out like no others but musically and visually. Truly Gorillaz is iconic 2 d is God is a banger so listen to that one next if you like this song.
2022 and I'm just chilling listening to this song. I always loved this song
I'll never forget how listening to this song made me feel when I was younger. It hits harder as an adult, the more time passed the more scars appeared from everything I've experienced, and this song holds a new meaning for me though for the same emotion.
First time I listened to this one it instantly became my favorite. It’s hard to find songs that have the same type of vibe.
bro this is probably one of their best songs ngl
i agree
Perfect for driving late at night, nice and chill
I miss the 2000's sounds in Gorillaz music. This shit just hit different.
That moment when you randomly get this song stuck in your head for the rest of the day because your in science class.
No regrets. Love it.
This is one of my favorite songs, god darnit!it is soo good. my god.
There's only one guy in the "band" He plays all the characters
(sighs) Yes, I know Damon Albarn actually wrote the lyrics, but I mean in the Gorillaz cannon. My question got answered anyways, I found a photo somewhere saying the lyrics were by both 2d and Murdoc.
Hmm well I know that Murdoc wrote Plastic Beach, Noodle wrote Demom Days, and 2D wrote The Fall so maybe Russel? Or Del? Not sure ...
+Shib00yah You might be thinking of Jamie Hewlett, who co-created the band with Damon Albarn. He isn't a musician though, he's a comic book artist and the story board artist for the music videos.
+Valalizee 17 yup you are right, every member has his album
Man this song takes me to another world, Gorillaz you guys make the best music of all, thank you for such a great experience.
Who wishes that Damon would play this song live again? The Demon Detour version is fucking fantastic, it's a shame it hasn't been played since then.

Best music from "Gorillaz" album, in my opinion.
This song never gets old no matter how many times I listen to it. I definitely think it's my favorite Gorillaz song, everything about it from the bass drop, to the drums, to 2D's singing, and so on make it fucking amazing. Both from the self-titled album and out of everything Gorillaz has made.
Where are my fellow 20-somethings who remember bumping this, putting the bass ALL THE WAY UP during that massive trip hop breakdown in 2001
I'm guilty...this is straight up nostalgia for me..I used to try and draw em up in my old art book..the tagging days man oh man...the digital won't let us go lol

Thank you for sharing this :)
Honestly imagining this song's bass drop right as a ghost in Luigi's Mansion scares you just enhances this for me
This song just jumped into my head just now. Good times.
I've been replaying this banger for the past 40 minutes or so

Although I like all of their albums, got to say that the self-titled album is my favorite as it's got a lot of amazing songs on it such as this one. Plus, all of the songs on it are superb, they all are great in their own way.
Since the day i saw them live all I did was work on myself, be a better person; and lately i've been kinda low but, as another person said, Gorillaz makes depression enjoyable. Thank you for this. This is a piece of heaven in the earth...

i love how gorillaz make depression something enjoyable :^)
Long nights, driving through the dark, wind blowing through the car, Gorillaz blasting.
The best nights.
