Volvo DIM / instrument cluster removal procedure & Problem Info for V70, S60, S80, XC70, XC90, etc

- Cluster Fix offers repair service for 2000 - 2009 Volvo vehicles with DIM ( instrument cluster ) problems that cause the unit to quit working intermittently and finally altogether.
Problems include gauges and displays that that power off and on as well, burnt back lighting, urgent air bag message and inoperable turn signal indicators.
Models that may be experiencing these issues include: S60, S80, V70, XC70 & XC90
As an added precaution it is recommended that you disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging and plugging in the instrument cluster.

Critical to be sure to remove two caps and torque screws under caps before doing any prying.
Can you remove the crystal without unplugging? I need to clean behind mine
My 2003 also has two bezel screws on top that must be removed before popping it out. Under two small pop out covers.
Great show. Question. If replace the start stop ignition switch (push button start) will the 2key fobs for the car work without needing to be reprogrammed?
This video does not tell you that yo may need to remove to star screws on the shroud before you pry it off. I have a 2003 S80 and I almost broke the shroud before a cap the covers the screws fell off.

On my 2002 S80 the bezel has two screws on top that must be removed before you xN pop it out.
Also the DIM was held in by 6 screws not 4
Would swapping a junkyard cluster into my car keep the same mileage or no?
Yes it would. But it may have the same or similar faults. I fixed mine myself. I simply resoldered all soldering points that were big enough. And try to "reflow" all soldering points on the SMD components using a heatgun set at 230C. Seems to work now but who knows how long...
I have the urgent air bag warning. I also have clock sometimes running backwards quickly and occasional weird pixels.
My indy and a Volvo dealer both said there are no codes to clear so how does that work? After you fix the DIM they WILL see codes to clear?
You may have your answer by now but I’ll answer it anyway. It’s certainly possible that your car will show codes after it’s repaired. Due to faulty solder joints the cluster is not able to show you the 004D code that it should throw because of the airbag light. There’s a faulty joint between the LED Driver and the Airbag LED and the board thinks the Airbag LED is faulty but it’s clearly not because it’s lit in your case. Clock running backwards is due to faulty connections between the MCU and the boards Display Driver. We’ve rebuilt about 1500 of these boards over the last few years. For what it’s worth, I’m not associated with Washington Cluster Fix, I have my own repair shop.
@@mouser485 thank you for your reply. I did send it out for repair and when it came back, it did still show the urgent airbag message and the airbag light but my Indy now did see codes he was able to clear. Interestingly, it was for a drivers door airbag, which I don’t even have. the urgent message and the airbag light are gone but, my gas gauge stopped working. The guy who repaired it said that has nothing to do with him repairing the cluster. He said probably sending unit. Coincidence? I can now get the car inspected with the airbag warning and light gone and can live without a gas if I have to, but just coincidental?
@@jeffflowers729 It could be a sending unit as I’ve never had to replace a faulty gauge in one of those clusters. I’d say those are probably the most reliable gauges used in a car so yes, check the sending unit. However, if it’s not the sending unit, I’d almost guess it was a problem with the circuit board, specifically the gauge driver. I’d put the gauge itself as the last thing to check. #1 sender, #2, circuit board, #3 gauge. That’s the order I’d go in if I was going to diagnose a fuel gauge problem in that particular car.

Quick question, will a S60R Gage cluster fit into a S60 2.5T?
I don't think they're mechanically different. just a different color. Also, Don't go trying to pass of a 2.5T as an R(unless it's been engine swapped with an R).
If I put another cluster in does car have to be reprogrammed by Volvo ?
Volvo clusters are VIN programmed and the mileage is stored in the cluster as well
