I think it's a habit, just like smoking, drinking alcohol, etc. Just like a baby needs to be stopped from breast feeding, one needs to be "weaned off" the addiction, because the body and mind is so used to it. It is like a drug, the body rejoices when it gets it, but it has bad side effects, like guilt, failure in school, biz, family etc. To "wean off", one needs another replacement of the addictive behavior.
