    Well jack, 2 things.
    1: It's not steel, it's ceramic. Yes, it broke, but you can't blame the knife because you were cutting wood.
    2: When have you ever cut a food that is as hard as wood? The knife won't break in food.

      ***** the whole point is that ceramic blades aren't built for cutting hard materials. It should be kept to cutting fruits and vegetables. No matter if it's the Yoshi blade or any ceramic blade, they aren't made for hard materials.

    In defense of the Yoshi blade, trying to dull the knife wasn't very smart. lol. Even high quality ceramic blades would chip or even shatter under such abuse. Under normal, non-abusive, circumstances, the blade should last for years.

      @Jrenyar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      JamesCizuz Does the yoshi blade say it cuts through wood? probably not because it's not a saw, its a knife, unless it was maybe serrated, no knife will cut through wood. Because it's no designed to. Anyway don't trust Jack, his reviews will always go beyond what they're meant to, because he doesn't like the product. His metal knife wasn't shaping up to well against the yoshi blade , so he has to think of something that will definitely make his knife look good. He's biased.

    • @selfishlyintrigued

    I have had a Yoshi knife ever since they first came out. Still have it and with a little knowledge you can sharpen them, but I'd suggest that you understand what your doing first.
    First off, its a CERAMIC blade, that means NOT STEEL!!!! There are limitations to this type of knife. And if you'd care to watch the video again, you can cut just about anything with a ceramic blade that you canna steel blade.
    I don't know many people that would try to cut a bone (or wooden spoon: ie; dumbass) with a steel knife let alone a ceramic one. Goes back to the old saying, "use the right tool for the job". You wouldn't try to put out a house fire with a fly swatter so why use a knife to try to cut through a bone. That's why the " cleaver" was invented.
    As far as sharpening one, you have to get a stone that's specifically made to sharpen ceramic in order to do so. Knowing this idiot, he'd probably use a regular sharpening stone on this, or worse yet, one of those "quick sharpening" deals, you know, the one with the little steel blades in it that you either run your knife across, or you run it across your knife.. You know, the one he said he used to sharpen a surrated knife. Come on, most people know that if your going to sharpen a surrated blade knife, you take it to someone that has a machine specifically designed to sharpen it. And if your going to sharpen a steel bladed knife, please at least practice on a blade that you can throw away if your skills aren't up to the test.
    I don't know everything, OK! But I've been sharpening knives now for about 50 years. It took me about a year to really get REAL good at it. And yes Jackie, there's more to sharpening a blade than just dragging it across a stone. If you think otherwise, I don't want you near my blades.
    I'm glad he actually took the time to bend over and get the care instructions for the Yoshi. They are a great knife, once you learn the limits of it. Like I said, I cut everything with mine except for rocks, firewood and dinosaur bones.

    I've had a yoshi knife for several years and it is still very sharp. It is used everyday. However, I've never used it to saw wood. The comparison knife is cheap and I wouldn't allow it in my kitchen. Mine came with the peeler and it worked very well, but I prefer my old fashioned stainless steel peeler that must've cost $.75 when I bought it 40 years ago. To sharpen it I run the slit of the blade over the tip of the butchers steel.

  • @DustinRodriguez1_0
    @DustinRodriguez1_0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Heh, as soon as he said 'I'm going to try to dull it' I said 'he's going to chip it!' Ceramic knives are not like steel knives! They are super super hard and you can not use them on hard things that would seriously dull steel knives. You're not supposed to use them on glass cutting boards either or, they say, with meat with bones... I don't have one (yet, I want one) but I am guessing the boned meat is only a problem if you actually hit the bone... I've never tried to slice through bone with any knife, and I'd use a boning knife to debone stuff anyway.

    Diamond whetstones will sharpen that blade. It is made from transformation toughened zirconium oxide so, it is about 8.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness, where diamond is 10.

    • @BlackVelvetDaydream
      @BlackVelvetDaydream 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but using a stone mangles your blade more than it does sharpen it. A tump will sharpen the hell out of almost anything, and without mutilating it. But they're also expensive and not easy to use.

    • @kylkinger
      @kylkinger 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of people do that. I think its just easier than removing all of the plastic from the sausage. If you think about it, it also keeps the sausage "Fresher" because you still have about 90% of the original vaccum sealed package on it.

    • @sp00kypink
      @sp00kypink 10 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @ov3rcl0cked

    Ceramic is harder than steel, which also means its more brittle. Since its so sharp, a ceramic blade rarely(possibly never) needs to be honed or sharpened. Ceramic has to be sharpened with diamond. Since its so brittle, cutting something hard could break the blade. Don't cut bones, frozen foods, or anything hard. They make a good knife for processing vegetables and fruits, but I'd stray away from using it to carve or debone.

  • @Dominikmj
    @Dominikmj 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    That is pretty stupid. You have to use a tool, for what it is made for. Ceramic knives (even the expensive ones) are amazing to cut fruit (acidity usually degrade metal and makes knives dull), vegetables, meat... for hard cheeses (or soft cheeses), wood (wtf!!!) and other things, you use a different knife!
    Yes - this knife is not made for morons. And if anyone believes that a knife is staying sharp forever... well I don’t know about this person...

    A much better test would be a quality PROPERLY sharpened straight edge knife VS the Yoshi blade. The yoshi may be sharp out of the box, but i would imagine it wouldn't stand up to a decent stainless steel knife that is properly maintained. It seems the target market for the yoshi is people who don't know how to care for a knife. Those are the kind of people that will end up chipping the blade. I am sure most yoshi owners put their knife in the dishwater.
    "never needs sharpening" is just marketing BS. ALL knives will dull at some point. It's best to stay away from gimmicks and get a real knife and learn how to maintain it.
    You should ditch the silly serrated knife for a good/decent plain edge knife and a good sharpening system. I use a honing steel and spyderco triangle sharpmaker to maintain my knives. Works great.

  • @BlackVelvetDaydream
    @BlackVelvetDaydream 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah, ceramic blades are extremely sharp and they have ridiculously good edge retention. However, they're not very easy or smooth to sharpen, should the blade dull. Thankfully that's not likely.

    The knife didn't break but because you put it in the groove in the wooden spoon and the slight bend of the knife will cause it to chip as it is a ceramic knife. Its like when you drop your ceramic mug and it chips, your putting a force on the ceramic and causes it to chip.

    The reason it broke is because extreme tension is caused when sawing something like wood and you dont saw completely straight. Its the same reason the saw locks up when you're trying to saw and you accidently saw off in a slightly different direction. Metal just bends when this happens, this blade is ceramic, ceramic doesnt bend.

    I bought a Yoshi Blade years ago and I hated it right out of the box. My #1 problem with the knife is the rubber handle material is molded around the heel of the blade. This means you can't get the blade flat on the cutting board. A rocking chop is impossible with this knife.
    On the other hand, the peeler is absolutely amazing and works as well today as is did when I bought it. Since the peeler literally never comes into contact with anything but food (no cutting boards or anything) the blade stays perfect.

    The Polish version of this product actually has in the instructions that if the knife chips even a little, you have to throw it out, because it becomes dangerous, as it can chip more in those places even on soft produce.

    ceramic knives are extremely brittle, yet very hard, the fact that they are very hard means that you will have a longer lasting edge under normal circumstances. however the knife's Achilles heel, is that it cannot bend particularly well, and it doesn't handle being used on bony meat, and other hard food that might bend it while you cut.
    Sharpening a ceramic knife is no problem, its essentially the same process as sharpening steel blades, but since it is harder than steel you need something harder than a ordinary sharpening rod, you need one, either in a harder kind of ceramic, or one with tiny diamond particles. a diamond sharpening rod is better on a steel knife aswell.

    Ceramic blades suck. They are too fragile, and only idiots like them. If you drop it on the floor, it will break, or even shatter. On a good day, I'm really clumsy, and drop stuff all the time, so I'll take metal any day. I have knives that are decades old, and when properly sharpened with a stone and steel, they'll do just a good of a job, and do NOT fall apart.

    • @MrAnxZiety
      @MrAnxZiety 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I just have a need to rely on a knife that won't shatter when my hands stop working, and I can't hold on to things. I'm sorry if I offended you in my original statement.

    when properly fired it can be nearly as hard as steel, but the point of ceramic knives isnt their blade strength its the fact that the edges never corrode.

  • @Deserticeninja
    @Deserticeninja 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes it does because it states "Since they are brittle they may break if dropped on a hard surface,and cannot be used for chopping through bones,or frozen foods" and a wood spoon is just as hard as bone

  • @born2burn1
    @born2burn1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It did not fail as a knife. He did say it cuts great. I have never ever tried cutting wood with a kitchen knife. That is why utility knifes are made from thicker steel.

  • @HagendazPVP
    @HagendazPVP 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The blade is ceramic, similar to porcelain. Obviously if you put enough pressure on it (seeing as how it's really thin) of course it's going to break especially with any stray from a truly straight cut. It says it'll dull slower than your average blade, and this is true, use it to cut many things that would normally dull an average blade, not a wooden spoon...

  • @lrdofmusic

    if you're cutting lettuce for example, it wont get brown in a day or two as it would had you cut it with a metal knife, ie it wont oxidize. that is what ceramic knives are good for.

    I know people are talking about him trying to cut the wood, but I would be bothered with the constant impact of the knife on a wood, tile or metal surface. Even the smallest shard of that knife can cause internal bleeding if swallowed, and I wouldn't want to take that chance. Plus, I'm wondering how durable it is if dropped or knocked onto the floor or into a deep sink.

  • @Deserticeninja
    @Deserticeninja 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ceramic knives will not corrode in harsh environments,are non magnetic,and do not conduct electricity at room temperature. Because of their resistance to strong acid and caustic substances,and their ability to retain a cutting edge longer than forged metal knives,ceramic knives are a much more suitable culinary tool for slicing boneless meat,vegetables, fruit and bread.Since they are brittle they may break if dropped on a hard surface,and cannot be used for chopping through bones,or frozen foods

    I have this set. Have had it for years. Mine chipped several times and I can assure u I didn't cut wood or bone. Mine actually broke right in half this morning cutting squash. 🤷🏼‍♀️ My peelr also broke a while back. I won't purchase another one but I did love this knife. I'd love to know of a different brand I might love so I can replace this one.

  • @MrXenolution
    @MrXenolution 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It has its own purpose. You wont buy a serrated bread knife to do fine cuts on vegetables, same for in the shop, you wouldn't buy a wrench to hammer in nails, even though it could, it'd probably break.

  • @Tofticus

    hey jack.i'm no scientist in any way,but i'm pretty sure the ceramic blade chipped because of the sudden heat caused by the friction of cutting through wood.stones exploding and cracking in a campfire is a similar example.

    Ceramic is much stronger than steel, which also means it is more rigid and inflexible (brittle) so it wont fair well if you drop it. I'm not sold on the Yoshi blade, but Kyocera makes pretty good ceramic knives. The downside is that you have to send it in to get resharpened and are expensive.

  • @RickyP033
    @RickyP033 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Knives I found whether $1 or $100 will dull in time...the basic difference is how long it will take to dull it...even the Miracle Blades. Further, I've had 2 of these knives...one cracked when I drop it and the other's handle came loose from the blade.

  • @sangilson1177
    @sangilson1177 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ceramic blades can be resharpened, I believe Kyocera (sp?) of Japan has a lifetime guarantee on their knives, as well as a sharpening service specifically for the knives they sell. As far as ceramic blades go they are the top of the line, but again you are not going to find one of their knives on sale at WalMart for $20.00, either. Most Kyocera's I have seen begin at over $100.00 and up.

    i have had several ceramic knives and love them they stay sharp and yes you can't cut frozen or bony meats but i would use a butter knife to cut steak. all knives have a purpose and not all knives can do everything.

    The knife is good for what it was designed to do... but if you read the care & maintenance guide he tossed out, it's for slicing, not for cutting hard cheese or carving with meat/poultry with bones, etc.
    I wold say it passed the test, for what it supposed to do.
