  • Defibrillators are popping up all around us but would you have the confidence to step up in an emergency? In this video the South West Ambulance Service offers a step by step explanation of precisely how and when to use a defibrillator, showing how you could restart a heart and save a life.
"Basic Life Support & Defibrillator demonstration" by South West Ambulance Service, filmed at Portishead Lido's inaugural Water Safety Day 2016.
Thanks to Portishead Pool Community Trust, HM coastguard, RNLI, South West Ambulance Service and everyone else who helped put on such an informative and interesting day!
Defibrillators are available to buy commercially although they are pricey. I found this one on Amazon which has a few excellent reviews amzn.to/39kbkjc (affiliate link) however if you're considering such an important purchase, please do carry out your own research and shop around!

Great video Jane - I have a heart condition so I think it's great they are teaching people how to use the Defibrillator properly

A damn sight better than many AED and resus videos online.

It's a bit disconcerting that the speaker on the defib machine is rather bad. If you have 2-3 people panicking around you it may not be heard properly.

I haven't seen defibrillators going up everywhere but now you have made me aware of them I bet I will now! It was interesting to learn that you need an access code to get hold off a public one. This is a great video to make us all aware of what to do.

That's interesting +Nadine Hill. We now have them in several key areas in Portishead such as outside of schools, at the Lido and in the High Street. Perhaps we're ahead of the game! Many thanks for your great comments.

What an amazing piece of kit. Good to learn some tips such as staying well away when the shock happens so you don't get shocked yourself. X

+Practically Perfect Mums yes definitely. I'm rubbish with first aid but hoping to do a course soon at my daughter's preschool as I haven't a clue what I'd do in an emergency! X

This is great to know. There are a couple of defibrillators around the village we live in and although I hope I would never have to use it, it's good to know how if I would have to.

I have seen so many videos and no one has put a pad on the shoulder. She put the 2nd pad on the right side. But I have not seen videos where emt put the first pad on the shoulder.

excellent and so well explained. This is the first video viewed that directs one to shave the pad areas. I wonder why the others omit this very important information ?

Good. C stands for CPR or circulation by the way, the trainer lady didnt mention it. A successful life saving is called a ROSC. Return of spontaneous circulation. 👍🏻😆

Use the pad to rip off the chest hair...much faster, and usually they come with more than one set of pads
