    Thanks and that was really smart of you because I do look for ideas myself but I don’t copy because I have my own designs floating around in my head but sometimes you get stuck and you just need to push but I appreciate you sharing and I like your work

    Excellent tips. I think artists everywhere appreciate your tip about using your own work. It doesn't honor an artist to steal their work. And more importantly it will stretch you as an artist.

    These are helpful tips. Thank you. On the subject of titles I struggle to find any comfortable ground between too dull/descriptive and too pretentious. Untitled-247!

      lol...well, the first time I won a ribbon in an art show I had two small paintings entered...both were "Untitled" No number. I won for "Untitled" but I had no idea which one it was haha...so I picked the one I thought was better when it was time to pin the ribbon to the wall. Lesson learned!

    What is the best surface to work on.

    • @cindyjamesartstudio

      Hi Vikki
      Usually a wood panel is best but there are many appropriate substrates. It needs to be porous and rigid as a general rule. Some people paint on canvas but if you don’t mount the canvas to a panel it can flex and crack. You can paint on paper and mount it on a rigid substrate as well.

    Hi Cindy, how can I make my paintings Transparant? I want to see the different layers but the layers underneath dissapear when I brush encaustic medium over the surface.

    • @cindyjamesartstudio
      @cindyjamesartstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ashti:). The thicker the layer of wax the cloudier it will be. Also, the more layer, the more it becomes opaque.
      Also, transparency will depend on your medium, the ratio of damar to wax, how many times it’s been reheated, and how clear the beeswax was to begin with.
      If you want a fully transparent layer of wax, I would recommend buying the commercial medium rather than making your own ( I usually make my own medium but I do have some R&F medium on hand for when I want a layer that is as clear as possible for a topcoat over an image transfer, for example).
      Use wax that has not been reheated over and over as wax does tend to darken to more golden as it sits on the heat.
      Warm wax over a cold layer will result in a thicker layer of wax, which will be more opaque, so to keep it as see-through as possible, warm your base layer and then apply a thin layer of wax over that.
      That Should help keep your layers transparent but it’s not like art resin where it will be clear no matter how thick it is. If you think of a block of beeswax and how you can’t see through that, that us what will eventually happen as the layers build up.
      If you are using colour glazes, just add small amounts of colour to your medium to keep it transparent.
      I hope that helps answer your question.

      @@cindyjamesartstudio thanks for your tips and answer. I live in Holland, I’m Dutch and I can’t find lessons or workshops in my country or in the Dutch language. Only spiritual stuff. My artist friends never heard of encaustic. So I surf the internet for answers. I buy medium from Artidel, somewhere in Germany. I’m very glad I found you and your artwork and thanks a lot for your answers. My first encaustic experiment I posted today on my instagram account. Greetings, Ashti Schuit.
