In an alternate universe where we thought lighting returns and FFXIII was good, because the mass rebranding and story revisions were due to the distance they wanted to put between this game and FFXIII. Let's face it if we got the verses XIII we'd just have people complaining that its another FFXIII game as well as it would have made it clear that square doesn't care about fan reception and that they would have been beating a dead horse.

In an alternate time or alternate universe, they are happily playing a hardcore game of Final Fantasy Versus 13 with "STELLA" in it on PS3 and was released on the year between 2011 and 2012. They are also probably waiting for Versus 13-2 or some spin off it at present time. While we wait for Happy Camping XV on PS4 for almost 9 years and counting since it was announced in E3. sigh*

Its such a shame, really. This wasn't just everyone's darkest wet dream come true, at least to say 12 years ago. The teams behind the groundwork were some of the best in the business, KH team on game development, CGI was the Advent Children team, Yoko doing sound score, finally Nojima and Nomura digging deep into FF on a personal level, the perfectionist he is. He wanted to make Versus take a direction far beyond that of FF7 in terms of grittiness. At the time, nothing was better than rewatching that 1st teaser so many times... reminded me much of the KH1 secret ending, something that both had in common. It was clear what Nomura was holding back for so long. The management screwed everything up, he deserves another chance.

Because XV was mostly redone from the ground up, so it wasn't so much removed as it was just a concept that wasn't reincorporated into the new version of the game. Priorities were all shifted about, with them working on many other things and recreating stuff all over again, so other playable characters wound up not being in the cards for the base game.
The reason why that did that is because they gave Noctis the ability to use all the weapons and if they kept the character switching aspect they would've just felt like stripped down versions of Noctis. But most likely we'll be able to play as them when the multiplayer releases.

Well judging by what the Final Fantasy VII Remake looks like in terms of gameplay as of today, we now know where Versus XIII's build got diverted to once XV took its own turn.
Re-watching this makes me realise that it's such a shame we didn't get this version of the game. I remember watching the initial trailer back in 2006 or so, and was more excited about Versus than FF13.
You know, it would've actually been so much better if this was the first half of FFXV. Instead of just getting Kingsglaive. This could've happened. Let you play in the city of Insomnia for a big chunk of the game, dealing with the Niflheim Empire up until they launch a full scale attack and eventually kill Regis. And THEN have you leave the city to go find Luna. And keep the gameplay involving the other three characters, where Prompto actually looked like he had good third person shooter mechanics. It would've made the game much longer, and so much better if they didn't just cut all this out. And it could've also made you like Luna a little more before she dies. Because you get nothing with her. It's hard to care about someone you just never see, and they made her death out to be this big emotional thing, and I didn't feel it. Imagine FFXV where the first third or even half took place inside Insomnia. And the second half was you on the run from the Empire after they've overtaken Insomnia. That would've made the game. It would've basically been like FFVI. where halfway through, the world gets blown up and suddenly everything's dark and dreary. Here, it could've had hope first. You fighting for Insomnia. Then hope is taken away and you're on the run. Then after getting to Niflheim, you could've actually fought there for a bit before encountering Aldercapt, maybe getting captured, and then going after him only to find out daemons have overrun Gralea and he's fallen to the Starscourge. And then part three would be the world's fallen to darkness, and you have to play through that, meeting people all over before coming to Lestallum, the last beacon of hope, and going back to Insomnia afterwards to take down Ardyn. Imagine a game like that, if it were actually the length of a classic Final Fantasy game. And none of the story would've had to change. You just add to it. And then we wouldn't have had to have a movie, five anime shorts, four DLC episodes, a shoddy online game, and several patches to explain everything that should've been in the main game. Then the hyped up FFXV would have truly been the best in the series, no question about it.

It would be great if Noctis and the rest were in the city when the attack happened. It would have much more impact for the story. The introduction in FF XV is very poorly made. Game is great though, but watching this make me want to experience this part of the story as well. The story was ok, but the way the told it was very poor :P
+cr4sher7 Yeah the beginning was boring, I thought it was funny but I didn't like it, in this one it looled like it started like Kingdom Hearts(of course Tetsuya) with the city being attacked like in Destiny Islands, and maybe the game started with exploring Insomnia a bit, would felt a little sadder in the end with Insomnia destroyed if they had kept the original idea
I feel like even though XV reuses a lot of ideals from Versus XIII, it still feels like a different game. I imagine old Noctis to be ruthless and incredibly powerful. Not only does he pose a threat to the Imperials, but to his own Empire. He’s capable of bringing down anything, whether is his allies are aiding him or not, however, he certainly seemed like he worked for his own interests.
One of the biggest tragedies on this planet is that Square Enix took this from Nomura instead of just letting him cook. This could’ve been genuinely one of their best titles ever released.

This is the version of FFXV when Tetsuya Nomura was still the director. IMO, the gameplay looks more fun than the actual FFXV we're getting, which is now directed by Hajime Tabata.

I love FFXV, but it would have been really interesting to see Versus XIII as well, especially with the things it had. It sounded very dark. Kids murdering other kids, people turning into daemons by becoming aggressive like an animal, etc. Plus, them using a Kingdom Hearts like style of combat looked cool. But I like XV and what it did. I just wish there was more cutscenes and I bit of a more fleshed out story.
It's amazing to think of how the initial game of FFXV changed drastically compared to this. It makes one think about what were to happen if FFXV were this still.
FFXV felt like Rockstar Games attempted a Final Fantasy game. I felt weird the NPC looks like from GTA world. FFXV also caters too much for the west FFX13 Versus looks like a legit Final Fantasy game. Man it should have been.
I legitimately remember seeing this and thinking how amazing the graphics were and how seamless events were like when the airship crashed into the building while staying in real time (they actually made a big deal out of this at the time). It's so crazy how much game development has progressed.
This shit still looks breathtaking. So much of what makes a game pretty is in the design and atmosphere, this game looks so much prettier than XV for those reasons. XV just... lost the charm.
As much as I'm looking forward to playing XV tomorrow, I really wish that the combat could have been closer to this. It just seems smoother and sleeker than FFXV, if Episode Duscae and the Platinum Demo are any indication.

A final fantasy with kingdom hearts gameplay would be so good. Playing with different characters gives you more battlefield control. Also the availability of weapons didn't necessarily mean that you couldn't use your party memebers because you can always make ur party members better at using those weapons.

Somewhere down the line Final Fantasy Versus XIII needs to be seen in its full glory, maybe one day when Tetsuya isn't working on every Square Enix project ever, I want to see this, I know that they probably won't be able to use the namesake of each character or the exact player models and stuff, but we need to see this in some way, hopefully if it happens it'll also be on PC so we can mod in the Final Fantasy Versus XIII stuff, unlike most people I actually liked Hajime's Final Fantasy XV, and I think that game is just a load of untapped potential that we'll never see, so instead I'd rather just see something like this someday, a rebirth of Versus XIII.
Now that the game has evolved into XV and is on next gen consoles, it looks so much nicer than this. Cutscenes and gameplay almost look the same now! Crazy how different it all looks...
So I think people are getting confused. That blue aquarium place at 0:13? That’s in Shibuya, but it’s not the Shibuya Hikarie, it’s the Park Hyatt building. HOWEVER, that doesn’t make sense, Versus XIII is based off of Shinjuku and Shibuya, but we clearly see too areas literally next to each other. In real life that’s like 12 minutes by car. Here’s what I think… The Park Hyatt building doesn’t look like that at all, but it might be a combination of the Shibuya Hikarie building. Now for you KH fans out there, these two places might actually be one and the same. Nomura doesn’t know what coincidences are lol, these are all very much intentional. I even think the real Park Hyatt building was in the Yozora fight as well lol. I really can’t let go of Versus XIII or Verum Rex, but the anniversary event has me excited beyond belief. Either we’re getting Verum Rex, Versus XIII (Versus XV?), or both.
Being able to play in Insomnia (not only 1 chapter), battles in ships in movement, controlling other characters, being able to drive war vehicles... such a shame those were not incorporated in FFXV
I enjoyed FFXV but there is something about the darker setting of Versus 13 that makes me feel that removing Tetsuya Nomura (who I'm not the biggest fan of) was a mistake. I feel all these characters really blend in on this setting and feel a bit out of place in FFXV. From an artistic POV I feel FFXV could've used more colorful characters like the previous games rosters.
Years ago, I watched the trailer for Final Fantasy Versus with my dear old friend. We were incredibly excited for the game; every aspect seemed captivating. We made a pact to purchase it and experience it together upon its release. However, after many long years of anticipation, my friend tragically succumbed to cancer before he could witness the fate of this masterpiece. I can only imagine his disappointment at seeing how the game was mishandled. Brother, I hope to join you in heaven soon, where we can finally play Final Fantasy Versus together. Until then, wait for me.
It’s crazy how much you can actually infer about the gameplay from this trailer. I would have preferred this battle system tbh, seems like a more realistic Kingdom Hearts. You can see a few shortcomings tho, like enemy mobs being scattered haphazardly and the camera being a little off when Noctis backflips/dodges. There also seems to be a lot context sensitive stuff, but I’m not sure how much there would have been since there’s no real game to look at. I’m not sure if this was a real playable demo or not, but if it’s the former, I pray for the day this gets leaked or dumped and we can at least play around with it.

aricente Okay man. I'm just going to bring some knowledge on you. No, it is not like Versus. You are indeed right no played it, but just by "looking", it can obviously be seem that it was never going to be like versus. Noctis is completely different in Versus if you can tell for one. Also they had Stella, who is an overall better character than Luna. Versus had a dark atmosphere as to where XV really didn't, as the game was intended to take off from the darkened view, XV should've took place after the events of "Omen", but it didn't which really let it down. For me at least. The combat is also very different. I mean come on dude, these games are really barely similar. I mean even the plot is different by a little.

aricente Honestly I think the tragedy story of versus along with its Pre-Tabata XV gameplay woudve been the best experiance. It was going to be a truely next gen game, especially with how free it felt in terms of combat. One thing that really grabbed me was segments that looked like cutscenes were actual gameplay. Im not going to say the Bros Road Trip is bad (im enjoying it quite a bit), but I wouldve loved to play the original vision To compare the two however is hard because when you get down too it, theyre almost completely two different games now
Rinn Mori i just cant, for the life of me, see it as two whole different games. the combat here looks too much like kingdom hearts, and while KH has great combat, i appreciate that they did something thats similar but different than KH. this heres combat still looks alot like 15s. story wise, i dont really care since there was never enough for me to get invested in V13. I also think steppung away from the Fabula Nova Crystalis was a good choice, seeing as 13 made a mess of the mythos with Lcie, cieth, falcie, time travel and all that shit
aricente I was actually refering more to when Tetsuya was still director when they decided to rename it XV hence why I mentioned pre-tabata, we are on a video ps3 version of the game after all. The only thing I can really say on the Fabula subject is that I dont think they planned to have sequels to XIII at first, at least I dont think so anyway (I still dont think they were really necassary since XIII ending was fine and ended with no loose ends...at first at least)
This is it. The heart of this dormant Shakespearean masterpiece is beating once again, this is what we wanted right? Now that it has been carved in stone its Versus or nothing... 3 part story now or never. So many questions up in the air right now nonetheless i have my hopes that Nomura found THE way to bring this game to life as intended.

In an alternate universe where we thought lighting returns and FFXIII was good, because the mass rebranding and story revisions were due to the distance they wanted to put between this game and FFXIII. Let's face it if we got the verses XIII we'd just have people complaining that its another FFXIII game as well as it would have made it clear that square doesn't care about fan reception and that they would have been beating a dead horse.
Be careful what you label the worst timeline because in the timeline we got Verses XIII we also have Square Enix being compared to EA

Its such a shame, really. This wasn't just everyone's darkest wet dream come true, at least to say 12 years ago. The teams behind the groundwork were some of the best in the business, KH team on game development, CGI was the Advent Children team, Yoko doing sound score, finally Nojima and Nomura digging deep into FF on a personal level, the perfectionist he is. He wanted to make Versus take a direction far beyond that of FF7 in terms of grittiness. At the time, nothing was better than rewatching that 1st teaser so many times... reminded me much of the KH1 secret ending, something that both had in common. It was clear what Nomura was holding back for so long. The management screwed everything up, he deserves another chance.

Because XV was mostly redone from the ground up, so it wasn't so much removed as it was just a concept that wasn't reincorporated into the new version of the game. Priorities were all shifted about, with them working on many other things and recreating stuff all over again, so other playable characters wound up not being in the cards for the base game.

The reason why that did that is because they gave Noctis the ability to use all the weapons and if they kept the character switching aspect they would've just felt like stripped down versions of Noctis. But most likely we'll be able to play as them when the multiplayer releases.

Well judging by what the Final Fantasy VII Remake looks like in terms of gameplay as of today, we now know where Versus XIII's build got diverted to once XV took its own turn.

Re-watching this makes me realise that it's such a shame we didn't get this version of the game. I remember watching the initial trailer back in 2006 or so, and was more excited about Versus than FF13.
You know, it would've actually been so much better if this was the first half of FFXV. Instead of just getting Kingsglaive. This could've happened. Let you play in the city of Insomnia for a big chunk of the game, dealing with the Niflheim Empire up until they launch a full scale attack and eventually kill Regis. And THEN have you leave the city to go find Luna. And keep the gameplay involving the other three characters, where Prompto actually looked like he had good third person shooter mechanics. It would've made the game much longer, and so much better if they didn't just cut all this out. And it could've also made you like Luna a little more before she dies. Because you get nothing with her. It's hard to care about someone you just never see, and they made her death out to be this big emotional thing, and I didn't feel it. Imagine FFXV where the first third or even half took place inside Insomnia. And the second half was you on the run from the Empire after they've overtaken Insomnia. That would've made the game. It would've basically been like FFVI. where halfway through, the world gets blown up and suddenly everything's dark and dreary. Here, it could've had hope first. You fighting for Insomnia. Then hope is taken away and you're on the run. Then after getting to Niflheim, you could've actually fought there for a bit before encountering Aldercapt, maybe getting captured, and then going after him only to find out daemons have overrun Gralea and he's fallen to the Starscourge. And then part three would be the world's fallen to darkness, and you have to play through that, meeting people all over before coming to Lestallum, the last beacon of hope, and going back to Insomnia afterwards to take down Ardyn. Imagine a game like that, if it were actually the length of a classic Final Fantasy game. And none of the story would've had to change. You just add to it. And then we wouldn't have had to have a movie, five anime shorts, four DLC episodes, a shoddy online game, and several patches to explain everything that should've been in the main game. Then the hyped up FFXV would have truly been the best in the series, no question about it.

It would be great if Noctis and the rest were in the city when the attack happened. It would have much more impact for the story. The introduction in FF XV is very poorly made. Game is great though, but watching this make me want to experience this part of the story as well. The story was ok, but the way the told it was very poor :P

I feel like even though XV reuses a lot of ideals from Versus XIII, it still feels like a different game. I imagine old Noctis to be ruthless and incredibly powerful.
Not only does he pose a threat to the Imperials, but to his own Empire. He’s capable of bringing down anything, whether is his allies are aiding him or not, however, he certainly seemed like he worked for his own interests.

This is the version of FFXV when Tetsuya Nomura was still the director. IMO, the gameplay looks more fun than the actual FFXV we're getting, which is now directed by Hajime Tabata.

I love FFXV, but it would have been really interesting to see Versus XIII as well, especially with the things it had. It sounded very dark. Kids murdering other kids, people turning into daemons by becoming aggressive like an animal, etc. Plus, them using a Kingdom Hearts like style of combat looked cool. But I like XV and what it did. I just wish there was more cutscenes and I bit of a more fleshed out story.

I legitimately remember seeing this and thinking how amazing the graphics were and how seamless events were like when the airship crashed into the building while staying in real time (they actually made a big deal out of this at the time). It's so crazy how much game development has progressed.

agelakute yeah. You're right. I love kingdom hearts gameplay. But i hate the Disney crossover shit. The only one that i liked story wise was Bbs. A final fantasy with kingdom hearts gameplay would be so good. Playing with different characters gives you more battlefield control. Also the availability of weapons didn't necessarily mean that you couldn't use your party memebers because you can always make ur party members better at using those weapons.

Somewhere down the line Final Fantasy Versus XIII needs to be seen in its full glory, maybe one day when Tetsuya isn't working on every Square Enix project ever, I want to see this, I know that they probably won't be able to use the namesake of each character or the exact player models and stuff, but we need to see this in some way, hopefully if it happens it'll also be on PC so we can mod in the Final Fantasy Versus XIII stuff, unlike most people I actually liked Hajime's Final Fantasy XV, and I think that game is just a load of untapped potential that we'll never see, so instead I'd rather just see something like this someday, a rebirth of Versus XIII.

So I think people are getting confused. That blue aquarium place at 0:13? That’s in Shibuya, but it’s not the Shibuya Hikarie, it’s the Park Hyatt building. HOWEVER, that doesn’t make sense, Versus XIII is based off of Shinjuku and Shibuya, but we clearly see too areas literally next to each other. In real life that’s like 12 minutes by car.
Here’s what I think… The Park Hyatt building doesn’t look like that at all, but it might be a combination of the Shibuya Hikarie building.
Now for you KH fans out there, these two places might actually be one and the same. Nomura doesn’t know what coincidences are lol, these are all very much intentional. I even think the real Park Hyatt building was in the Yozora fight as well lol.
I really can’t let go of Versus XIII or Verum Rex, but the anniversary event has me excited beyond belief. Either we’re getting Verum Rex, Versus XIII (Versus XV?), or both.
Being able to play in Insomnia (not only 1 chapter), battles in ships in movement, controlling other characters, being able to drive war vehicles... such a shame those were not incorporated in FFXV

I enjoyed FFXV but there is something about the darker setting of Versus 13 that makes me feel that removing Tetsuya Nomura (who I'm not the biggest fan of) was a mistake. I feel all these characters really blend in on this setting and feel a bit out of place in FFXV. From an artistic POV I feel FFXV could've used more colorful characters like the previous games rosters.
They did not remove him for no reason. He did not have clear path set out for the development and took his sweet time. Thats why.
Kingdom Hearts: Versus XIII sounds nice to me. Let Nomura have the title so he can tell the full story.

What I told you Kingdom Hearts 4 was a thing.
Years ago, I watched the trailer for Final Fantasy Versus with my dear old friend. We were incredibly excited for the game; every aspect seemed captivating. We made a pact to purchase it and experience it together upon its release. However, after many long years of anticipation, my friend tragically succumbed to cancer before he could witness the fate of this masterpiece. I can only imagine his disappointment at seeing how the game was mishandled. Brother, I hope to join you in heaven soon, where we can finally play Final Fantasy Versus together. Until then, wait for me.

It’s crazy how much you can actually infer about the gameplay from this trailer. I would have preferred this battle system tbh, seems like a more realistic Kingdom Hearts.
You can see a few shortcomings tho, like enemy mobs being scattered haphazardly and the camera being a little off when Noctis backflips/dodges. There also seems to be a lot context sensitive stuff, but I’m not sure how much there would have been since there’s no real game to look at.
I’m not sure if this was a real playable demo or not, but if it’s the former, I pray for the day this gets leaked or dumped and we can at least play around with it.

Fuck, this still just looks like it would've been fucking amazing, even after a decade. Wasted my whole childhood waiting for this shit, and the final release is still nowhere near as impactful as this little snippet of gameplay was to me.

im playing the gae now and its a lot of fun. everyone is complaining about it not being like versus, but its not like any of yall played versus either way, so theres no way to tell its better
aricente Okay man. I'm just going to bring some knowledge on you. No, it is not like Versus. You are indeed right no played it, but just by "looking", it can obviously be seem that it was never going to be like versus. Noctis is completely different in Versus if you can tell for one. Also they had Stella, who is an overall better character than Luna.
Versus had a dark atmosphere as to where XV really didn't, as the game was intended to take off from the darkened view, XV should've took place after the events of "Omen", but it didn't which really let it down. For me at least. The combat is also very different. I mean come on dude, these games are really barely similar. I mean even the plot is different by a little.
Marshmello l Omen was more of a what if trailer. what if noctis had gone on his own and didnt have his friends woth him, well, hed go dark side. Also, do we need another "dark final fantasy" 7, 8, 10(thematically), 13 series ( character wise, thematically as well). i think 15 is just fine the way it is. i didnt want another brooding hero like cloud, lightning, and squall
aricente Honestly I think the tragedy story of versus along with its Pre-Tabata XV gameplay woudve been the best experiance. It was going to be a truely next gen game, especially with how free it felt in terms of combat. One thing that really grabbed me was segments that looked like cutscenes were actual gameplay. Im not going to say the Bros Road Trip is bad (im enjoying it quite a bit), but I wouldve loved to play the original vision
To compare the two however is hard because when you get down too it, theyre almost completely two different games now
Rinn Mori i just cant, for the life of me, see it as two whole different games. the combat here looks too much like kingdom hearts, and while KH has great combat, i appreciate that they did something thats similar but different than KH. this heres combat still looks alot like 15s. story wise, i dont really care since there was never enough for me to get invested in V13. I also think steppung away from the Fabula Nova Crystalis was a good choice, seeing as 13 made a mess of the mythos with Lcie, cieth, falcie, time travel and all that shit
aricente I was actually refering more to when Tetsuya was still director when they decided to rename it XV hence why I mentioned pre-tabata, we are on a video ps3 version of the game after all.
The only thing I can really say on the Fabula subject is that I dont think they planned to have sequels to XIII at first, at least I dont think so anyway (I still dont think they were really necassary since XIII ending was fine and ended with no loose ends...at first at least)

This is it. The heart of this dormant Shakespearean masterpiece is beating once again, this is what we wanted right? Now that it has been carved in stone its Versus or nothing... 3 part story now or never. So many questions up in the air right now nonetheless i have my hopes that Nomura found THE way to bring this game to life as intended.
