- This is not a super quick video but I felt it was important to go into detail and explain why I show each step.

Mastering and Mixing can be the most fun part but it's also very discouraging if you can't quite get the sound you want.
It’s certainly can be fun, usually takes me 3 months to get a track that I’m happy with trying different build ups and drops and getting ready for real realise and sometimes can be frustrating, but with certain plugins and side compression it helps, keep going until you’re happy with your song and it’s about self satisfaction, before getting other listeners to listen

I love how you take your time at the beginning to explain that this is just a beginner's tutorial and that professional mastering by experienced people really is something else. I mastered my own album recently and though it worked out fine, I realise my skills are nowhere near those of a professional. Mastering is a hard skill to master!

That seems to be the proper way of teaching these things in my opinion. Also, mastering my own songs was definitely made easier by using the Youlean Loudness meter you mentioned here and in a previous video. Great stuff!

I came back here to throw this second comment cuz I spent my entire day on FL, apply these tips and I got instant result.
How did I do I?
I took 3 songs and observed their waveforms on the spectrum analyzer you used here; mario - let me love, craig david - walking away and one Afro-pop instrumental. Was looking at both the frequency distribution and the peak loudness ratio of the high, mid and low bands. The low end had more gain, follow by the high, then mid. I then added an EQ and did a low cut, I moved it across until I could hear how it sounds on small playback devices like mobile phone. Listening to that low cut enabled me to adjust my beat to sound good on my phone and computer speaker.

Holy cow! This video addressed lots of problems I had ... Noone told me that tonal balance is a key to make things sound good on mulitple systems. Noone told me the -14LUFS thing for streaming, and noone told me to make sure to leave some conversion headroom.
All things I uploaded to soundclound got those artifacts and strange distortions..

Little tip:
-Put the song you are mastering on Chanel 1 and add al your effects there, so you can put your meters on to the master and also munitor the reference track's. You can switch between your song and the reference track way faster this way.
-Limit the track bevor you eq. The limiter still is last in the effect chain, but you put it on there bevore you eq. Limiting changes a sound quite a bit and eventually destroyes all the hard work you have done with the eq.

You make the best videos on FL tutorials .. compared to other you are better
Instead of keep copying/pasting the original value on the automation it's sometimes really useful to just double click on the automation and paste the value on the MAX knob. That way you just have to move the entire automation up at its maximum to have the default maximum value you pasted in.
Funny how, I have been producing in FL since version 3, so quite a while... This really did help clear up a lot of issues I have had. I sincerely appreciate this tutorial a lot dude. I definitely see this as something that is so overlooked by many.

Quick pro tip for that automation clip in the intro section! If you bring up the channel window for for your automation clip (find and select it in the channel rack) you can paste that 0db value to the "max value" knob which will save you the trouble of having to paste it in every time. That way you can just drag it to the top and not be concerned about it being too high or low 👌

Many Mastering Engineers rely on their headphones. Mostly open back headphones. This way you can make sure your room doesn't fool your hearing and you can make choices more confident especially with EQs and Compression/ Limiting because the smaller membrane can make distortion more audible.
It worked for my 64-bit PC. Thanks a lot.

I always put my reference-track on a separate channel, that outputs directly to the same outputs, as the master channel ("Analogue 1 - Analogue 2" in your case).
That way, I don't have to deactivate the effects on the master-channel and can switch back and forth, effortlessly ;)
This comes in extremely handy, when there is more going on in the mastering-session, than just two tracks (the mixed track and the reference track).
I actually like to mix and master in the same session. I don't get, why most people create separate projects for those two steps.
If - while mastering - I stumble on a problem with the mix, then I can just fix it right there, because I'm still in the same project.
To me, that seems way more convenient than having to go back to the mix-session, fixing the problem, exporting the mix, importing it into the master-session and finally continuing to actually work on the master.
Can anyone tell me, why this approach is considered to be "wrong" by so many?
cefk Firstly, that tip is fantastic and I'll be using it from now on!
Secondly, the reason many of us master in a new project is because of the CPU and RAM demands of mastering plugins. My PC literally crashes and I have to put my buffer to about 2000 to master in the same project. That's why I do it :)

Tip: ctrl A and select all in piano roll. Put the mouse cursor over one of the notes and hold alt and scroll up or down and that moves all the velocity all at once.

I also have one tip for you. Instead of constantly pasting the value when setting the fade in/out, hold shift when dragging the point, that enables moving it sideways without accidentaly moving it up/downwards. Maybe you already know that and simply dont use it, but it's a tip for the comment section :) cheers

Im struggling GREATLY with my mixdowns being somewhat loud and decent on earbuds (I can only mix using studio headphones, so I have to take a chance testing the mixdowns everywhere else) but they seem often unbalanced or too quiet in a car or on household speakers,or even my phones speakers. I don't understand the concept and how it makes tracks loud and enjoyable on most devices.
