“They call it a Specified Charge because extortion is such a dirty word.”

I am so glad I found this video! I was on hold to HMRC to find out what the hell this letter was. Immediately hung and started following the instructions on this video.

Great video thank you! I received a specified charge letter but when I logged into my account online there is no sign of any charge or late payment in my PAYE account. It specifically says I don't owe anything so I'm even more confused. Could it be that their system hadn't caught up to the fact that they had since received my RTI but the letter was still sent as it's automated?

What if I closed my business account in December 2020 (limited company) I was the only employee and went full time September 2019 and no longer traded, Now I have had a £600 liability fee from may/June/July 21.

@@davidlatham5789 I’m calling hrmc tomorrow what a pain in the 🤬! I’ve been full time since September 2019 and not traded or paid myself anything. If hmrc can’t help I’ll follow the advice in this video. Very useful find.

@@michellewalton9871 Yes, sounds like this thing: they think your company is an employer and they are expecting PAYE returns for you and are making up £200 specified charges when they don't receive them each month. Calling them is probably the best thing to get some or all of it cleared. Good luck!

Hi Michelle, did you manage to speak to HMRC? I’m having the same problem now, but they don’t pick up the phone. Did you inform HMRC when you closed your company? My account used to deal with HMRC but he left before I closed the company so I have no clues at all. 😵

@@sharonkang6965 yes I called them and got through and they put a stop to it. Try calling them again and persevere. As the tax return is due this month I’m sure they are busier than normal. Try not to worry you shouldn’t have to pay I didn’t. I hope you manage to sort it. Your accountant shouldn’t need to do anything anyway if you have closed your company you should just be able to sort it with a phone call.
