How to register as an employer (register for PAYE with HMRC)
How to register for PAYE with HMRC, making your business an EMPLOYER. Not a bad process, but there are a couple of quirks to watch out for.
I'm neck deep in making videos for my Patreon channel at the moment, and this is one that, when I was watching it back, I thought could be useful as a standalone piece of advice.
If this is the way you like to be taught about the accounting and tax then come join us over at the The Accounting Tea Break Library on Patreon:
www.patreon.com/copperlibrary
It's £10 a month, it's full of all the tax and accounting stuff you wish you knew when you started your own business and it will save you some combination of time, money and stress.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments.
Thanks for watching!

If we haven't met yet, then hi, I'm Benedict, I'm a Chartered Accountant. This channel is my place to give tips and advice to freelancers, small business owners, start ups, entrepreneurs... anyone who might need a bit of guidance from an accountant in the UK.
My accounting firm is called The Copper Coins; head over to my website if you need more help than a TH-cam video can provide.
DISCLAIMER TIME: Are you my client? No? You don't have an engagement letter from me with my signature on it? Well then I guess you're not my client, not right now at least. So, of course, I have to warn you that this is just general information, just me talking about my experience with accounting, and that my company and I can't be held responsible for what you do with this information. I make these purely to be helpful, but I may have made a mistake, or brushed over some subtleties of the law, or you might be in a situation that means this information is wrong for you. If you want personal accounting advice, go find an accountant and talk to them and maybe hire them. I might be taking on new clients if you want to get in touch. Thanks.

The five types of VAT

Anything you sell should fall into one of these five VAT categories. This is a video from my Patreon channel that, when I was watching it back, I thought could be useful as a standalone piece of advice. Whatever goods or services you sell, you should probably be aware of the category (or categories) you fall into for VAT. It is, admittedly, less important if you are under the VAT threshold and ...

Great channel - new subscriber! Question - I am a doctor in specialist training. 5 year programme with rotational placements for usually 1 year at a time. Given that the place of work changes every 1 year would you say that this would be classed as a temporary place of work...such that travel to and fro would therefore be eligible for tax relief? Thanks

can you only pay a dividend if the company has profit? for example a company has a loan of £10,000 outstanding but has £3,000 in its bank account so a net £7,000 owed, can a dividend be paid from the £3,000 in the bank or would this be classed as the company is not making profit

It specifically says I don't owe anything so I'm even more confused. Double tax bills while your income grows each year. I mean, why else are we in business. We aim to grow each year right? Our only relief from tax is when our bodies are broken and we're forced into retirement. Not bitter at all. :(

Thank you for your very clear videos. I bought my first fixed assets (small UK limited company) in tax year 2020/21, and did the double entry bookkeeping for the depreciation and it all works great (after much initial misunderstanding) and everything balances. I've also been claiming AIA 100% first year and the super-allowance in the second year. I haven't been showing the capital allowances in my accounts because I thought (probably naively) that the capital allowances was for tax purposes only. In the tax year 2022/2023, I made a profit before tax but, after capital allowances, made a loss. Am I doing this right - do I just gaily carry on with my double entry bookkeeping (add back the depreciation to my pre-tax profits, work out the tax then say "oh but I made a loss for tax purposes" and carry it forward against tax for future years without it affecting my accounts? I'm totally confused about it.

Thanks so much for making this video, I have a quick question: Is it ok to claim for an item worth over £1000 for the year on the cash basis? I asked because you mentioned avoiding going over £1000 for a single item for AIA but does that count also for the Cash Basis? Say for example you purchase a machine for work which costs £2000 and you want to put through as an expense using the Cash Basis, would you be able to claim for the full year with this amount for the single item? If so, how many years do you need to make sure you keep hold of the machine for after the submission of the item as an expense for that year. Thanks in advance!

On the question of import end export you suggested to answer no, "but you can still do those things"... can you elaborate a little more on the implications perhaps of answering yes vs no? Just feels a little odd to say 'no' and then start buying goods and selling to the EU and internationally straight away... and what do you meant by "it won't be your main business". Thanks!

HMRC make the criteria to claim overly complex so normal people feel nervous to claim and in the end do not claim in fear of a hugh re-payment and probably penalty fine years down the line. In essence HMRC are crooked (keeping money that is owed to workers) they should explain in simple and workable terms that a normal person can understand and apply confidently. I have changed work place recently, i will spend over 40percent of my time at this place of work but it is expected to be my workplace for under 24 months. The way i read HMRC's riddles is that this becomes a temporary place of work and i can claim back upto the 45p per mile (32p after i deduct the 13p my employer reimburses me). Unless there is some other obscure caveat i have missed? It is wrong really, if they were that clever they could translate their wording into understandable language on their wedsite but i highly doubt they're capable of doing this. Very frustrating....
