It was a general dislike for content on YT based on the opinions of thin-skinned and out-of-touch advertisers as a whole that lead to the pulling of ads. In other words, big corporations and agencies being out of touch with the people that supposibly provide for, an ongoing motif in human history you will find.
Put simply, businesses = dumb as hell. That is what caused the adpocalypses.
Nellie Bly was a great person. Her attitude and heart were amazing. She is the one woman I would most like to meet from all of history. Many women today have that same attitude of 'I can do anything' and it makes us all greater.

As I was growing up, I learned of Nellie Bly, a historical woman that defied the odds. Conversely, during most of my life i have read that Hollywood has a difficult time making movies about strong women. With this in mind I have always felt that they only needed to read a book about Nellie Bly and they would have a story depicting a strong woman.
French did movie Jeanne D'Arc in 1900 also known as Joan of Arc.
10 Days in a Madhouse is also a film. It came out in 2015. I think they did a good job with the movie.
I'm so glad women have made such great strides, but we still have a ways to go. I think we don't talk about what those with disabilities had to go through enough. She was a hero.
8 agree. We are still not equal between women and men. Men still get higher sentences for the same crime of rape.

Thank you so very much for covering Nellie Bly. She was amazing. I never heard of her till i took my son to a little playland park in Brooklyn. It was called the Nellie Bly Park. so i looked her up. there are so many women (and "minorities") who deserve to be in our history books. i really can't understand it. for instance, there were real hero women who were pilots and didn't get the notoriety that the wealthy Earhart did. Harriet Quimby in 1911 was first woman to get a pilot's license in the U.S. Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was the first Black American woman pilot - whose mother was born a slave and couldn't read. Raymonde de Laroche - in 1909, she made the world's first solo flight by a woman, taking off in a biplane. A year later, she became the first woman in the world to receive a pilot's license - she lived in France. so women started the "liberation" thing a long time ago. - - -So thanks again for Nellie Bly - she deserves a lot more attention than she gets.

I just discovered about this woman and am doing a biographical essay on her, and I am simply blown away by the amount of amazing things she managed to do within the short expanse of her 50-year life. Also, within reading both of her books, I love this woman's personality and how sarcastic she is. She deserves to be recognized more, and I would just like to say thank you for making this video :)
Jane here. Thank you for the excellent biographical sketch. I have read her account of her round the world trip. Actually she met with Jules Verne, and he greatly encouraged her.
I have also read her book about the insane asylum. One of the hardest things for her was to leave those precious, tragic friends she met inside there. She worried about what would become of them.

Great video again. I really like this channel of Simon's (and his crew). This channel and TIFO are his best work IMO. This video being uploaded today is one of those times where a coincidence is almost mind blowing. Just 2 days ago (February 3) I had a conversation with a friend of mine that included Nellie Bly's name among others. It's just weird that we talked about her, and here's Simon with a new Biographics video about Nellie Bly.

I played in that insane asylum in 1979. Grew up down the road, on Roosevelt Island, formerly Blackwell's Island. By then, only the octaganal center section remained. At 11, there was no way a group of boys was going to let that haunted ruin sit there and not try to get in.
Whole thing was rebuild in the 90s as a residential apartment building. Dynamite views of Manhattan, and probably a few ghosts...
The name?

Okay, this woman is straight badass and can still serve as an example for all women, who want to achieve more in life! I love her mentality, I have the same burning passion to do stuff and not just settle with less!
I am from Apollo Pennsylvania near where Nellie Bly was born. I was very pleased how accurate this biography was. The only thing I would correct issues from Cochran Mills PA not Cochran PA

I kept thinking of Shudder Island when she was at the asylum. Can’t imagine what that must’ve been like for her. She saved so many lives from mistreatment by doing that.

A pioneer in journalism and a legend in giving better treatment for mental illness and in subverting expectations for what a woman of the times could do. Just watched the movie. She inspires me. I can relate. The only thing that has kept me down is my illness too. The verdict is still out if I’m done for or if I will get a second chance.

I first read about her when I was in grade school. It was part of the Value series. It was called The Value of Fairness. The part where she went undercover at the asylum stuck out most in my mind. The ice cold baths, the deplorable conditions really left a message for me. If she hadn't brought it to everyones attention what would've become of the real mental patients?

In elementary school I read a series of books based on the lives of historical figures like: Madame Currie, Martin LK, Jackie Robinson etc .. I had almost forgotten that Nelly was one those figures the books highlighted Until now, truly a remarkable woman. great video.
Normally the whole "strong female role models" just bugs me. Because I don't see a need to particularly highlight someone's feats just because they are female (and fyi; I am female). But Nellie Bly really just left me in awe, and if there's anyone I'd really see fitting that image of a "strong female role model" it'd be her. This lady faced one wild adventure after the other, of many things that no other person would even do in their life at all. To boot, she had to face the heavy discrimination women faced at that time, only making all these adventures all the more complicated. And all of that with a seemingly positive attitude and a headstrong passion. A person definitely deserving to have their name go down in history. Very inspiring, and deserving of all the credit.
Nellie Bly has definitely made a revolutionary change in journalism especially since she is one of the first undercover journalist.

3:55 wikipedia says this part of her life was in 1885, and according to the inflation calculator I found, $5 in 1885 is equal to $160 USD in 2024. So she earned $4 an hour in 1885 compared to $7.25/hour today

The Nellie Bly bio was great! Perhaps you could someday feature the life of Esther Hobart Morris, the USA's first female judge, who was appointed Justice of the Peace, at Wyoming's South Past City beginning February 1870.
I loved this biography. I shared it with my 12 yr old because I found it so inspiring. But when I looked for other inspiring women biographies there were really none. We’ve watched Marie Curie, also excellent and a wonderful role model for girls wanting to get into sciences. Even though most history was written by men, there are so many incredible women that you can highlight. I’m really looking forward to watching more of these. Up next, Amelia Earhart! Thanks so much for these.

Love the history of Nelly Bly. You forgot to mention her trip to Mexico in 1988 where she reported her experiences for six months. And ended up with a book “Six Months in Mexico” by Nelly Bly.

I wonder who won the trip as Simon told us, whoever made the most accurate guess of Nellie's travel time would win a trip to Europe. More than a half-million people entered. On Jan 25, 1890 Nellie was welcomed by a cheering crowd as she returned to New York, 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes & 14 seconds after first setting sail on her nearly 25,000-mile journey across four continents. She was already a well-known journalist when she embarked on her trip around the world, but the voyage made her a pop culture hero. Figurines, trading cards and board games were made with her image.

I enjoy all of your 3 channel, toptenz, visualpolitik EN, including this one, but I have a problem with watching visuapolitik because of the music, i'm not sure if you notice it or if your other subscribers mention it or commenting on it in the comment section, the music goes high but your voice goes down like to a normal sound, it's very annoying, you have no idea, please do something about it. The biographics is my favorite channel.

I read her original exposé of Blackwell Island and it was honestly horrifying.
Nellie Bly was a hero (heroine ? ) to my grandmother, who was born in 1892. She (my grandmother ) was a mill-girl in Bolton (UK) who lost an arm in a mill accident aged 14. I remember the name Nellie Bly, but I had no idea what she did. Clearly a publicist.

I've been told I'm boring by my younger siblings bcos of my interest in history and I love watching biography on the history channel,to me it's a way of keeping my brain sharper cos I need to constantly scramble my brains to remember the dates of certain event in history ,I love this channel and Ive binge watch all night and now it's 10a.m.😂

I still don’t understand how Nelly doesn’t have a movie. I stumbled upon a book about her at the library when I was in high school and always thought what a good film her life would make. Real life “Around the World in 80 Days” and THEN SOME! She was like a real life 19th- early 20th century Lois Lane!
