Fantastic tutorial. Step by step and to the point. I've made a few box pleat skirts which so easy. But the only knife pleat skirt I made went skew-whiff. Your pattern is hopefully make my wraparound skirt a lot easier to make than I first thought. Thank you!
oh...and modifying existing clothing is also a great way to learn. during ww2 you barely could get fabric so a lot of men's clothing were reworked. ever notice in old films the suit like quality of clothing. also I got to see the generals coat from Catherine the great general. the cuffs were very very functional. when riding they could be folded down to help keep hands and ankles warmer. I was blown away to learn that most decorative things had a functional past.
I suspect smocking was done so that.as a.child grew it could be stratigically let out to fit them longer. just a suspicion. ..lol...actually me mum did it.
This makes me want to learn to sew again! I was lost with what to watch for videos and I can't afford one on one lessons right now as I am taking University courses. But this has the one on one feel, all questions that come up during the videos are always covered. Love this lady. :)

I found that I absolutely love to make christina dresses now. I can add all sorts of really cool effects and even hats pillows blankets and none of it takes all that long...so if I have hand work it's a joy to do. I absolutely love doing those. just thought I might add my two cents how people use to teach themselves when they didn't have wonderful people teaching them like you. also tell people how to try out techniques before investing a lot of time and effort in a full sized item.
So we went from it being a pillow/cushion cover, to a skirt with open pleats!! Where do you sew if you want the pleats to get fixed in place along their length?
Question re maintaining garments with pleats - must you refold and press after washing or is there a way to stitch the pleat folds to make them stay pleated?
+Wanda MG unless the pleats are stitched down for the full length, they could become unpleated with regular washing and drying. If it it's something like a skirt though, I would recommend dry cleaning the garment so you don't have to re-press the pleats.
Hi professor! I'm asking a question not related to this tutorial, but you have help me before, so I hope you do it again. I'm sewing a dress for Halloween for my daughter with pattern 6401 new look, but it has a very low back and she wants me to rise it, it's all the way down to her waist. Do I just make the v less deep and move the zipper higher? Will that do it?
+Luz Padilla that pattern is beautiful! If it were me, I'd take the back bodice pattern, trace it onto another piece of paper. Place the pattern in the outline and then slide it up until the bottom of the "V" is where you want it to be. Draw the bottom of the V and then blend it to the original shoulder line. Yes, you'll have to put in a longer zipper to account for this new length or just move it up. I hope it works out! :)
The stitches that you do downpleat should not go as far down as your pelvis/hip where it swells, so the band that is stitched sits above the bone and that should keep things straight. (In my humble no sewing machine experience opinion :-p)
I have a beautiful vintage wool skirt that has knife pleats. How would I crisp up the pleats, as they have softened over time, without ruining the wool or accidently shrinking/ruining the fabric?
You should have a wool setting on your iron and most wool can take a high heat setting. So if it were me, I'd press it, but use a dry iron, no steam, so there's no chance of shrinking
+Sanjida Alam you can, you'll just be hemming it before you can try it on and determine if you want to adjust the length with a little more accuracy. Usually you pleat it, then do a waistband to finish the waistline.
I haven't tried it but I guess I would put the lining in and then pleat it. so it would be in prior to putting the waistband of a skirt and I'm just treating both fabrics as one.
How do I make my pleets appear as a circle in an outfit, like I want it to go round in circle after I'm done with the pleets itself on an outfit? I know I have to pleets it first but how to I place it to give me a circle and round shape in my dress
