There's no better feeling when a steam train leaves the station and feel the steam blowback. Several years ago I was able to ride in the cab of a steam I restored steam train. My gosh weather coal or oil-powered it's impressive
Your comment makes me smile. In the 70s railroads were my big hobby. In our town we had a branch line about a mile north. And 2 miles north a major mainline. I loved to hear the modern horns on those diesels late at night. But guess what? Right in our neighborhood was Knotts berry farm which had its own steam train which ran during park hours every day so I heard that train sound thousands and thousands of times over several decades!
How funny - German here. I saw a documentation about this restaurated Big Boy on TV yesterday. And today I stumble upon this short! I tell you, there is not such thing as "coincidence"! :)
I can't help myself I cry every time I here a steam whistle I grew up at the end of the age of steam , Grandaddy was a Conductor on the New York Central the day when they brought the first Diesel electric locomotive into the yard was Grandads last day working on the NYC he came home hung his Conductors hat on the inside of the front door and that is where it remains to this day .He was Steam Man through and through. I shed a tear for the end of steam every time I here a steam whistle.
Every four years in the presidential election, every candidate will say that America is great again, and the top priority is to order China to reduce emissions.
You are right, but don't the steam engines pollute? I know I sound dumb, but I have to admit that I don't know! When I was seven years old we lived with a track about a football field size behind us. So, my grandparent's small cinder block house was in our back yard, then a very small cornfield, then the tracks. One day my friend were waiting to watch the train, when the train pulled up and asked us if we wanted to ride to the next block. I had such a beautiful, loving, happy childhood!! Now, at age 68, the apt. where we live has a track alongside our building! Did anyone here know that there are trains sometimes at 4 AM!!!!! I don't even notice, now!
I'm from Ohio. My Grandad, dad and uncle were all railroad men. The New York Central and the Pennsylvania railroads. Dad and his brother were on a bridge gang. Grandmother and Granddad lived across the street from a main crossing. Those big steam engines came often as did the passenger trains. When she set the table plates and glasses were upside down to keep the coal dust off. I live near a track now in the same town. There's a 1 a.m. train daily. That lonesome whistle reminds me of the early 50s and the trains.
My grandfather was a Train Engineer back in early 1920's into the late 1940's . I still have pictures of him in his train.. i loved how trains looked back then , they had so much more character than modern trains..
We get to romanticize being engineers of those steam engines; the reality, however, was a freezing back, and a burning front! (as per one of the oldsters I spoke to once upon a time). He said give me a diesel any day!
I grew up next to the Grand Trunk railroad tracks. There were about 30 kids on the block. (Irish Catholic neighborhood in Chicago in the 60s). Once a year, we'd get a treat when the 'old engine' would go by. We never knew when, but we'd hear it chugging, and the kids would run up and down the block yelling 'the old engine is coming, the old engine is coming'! 😊 1960s social media!
when I see steamers it puts a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. My father was born in the 30s, his father worked with the rail roads for 30 years. He would get free rides in the summer to back to the farm in Dewey county Oklahoma on the steam trains in the 40s and early 50s. He was a member of the train museum in So Cal. I though the big boy was the 4444 but Im not a train guy. When I retired from the military 25 years ago he came up to Washington state and we went to Canada to ride the royal Canadian train. RIP pops

I love this quick video and most of the comments.,however it seems that no one knows that this is a Big Boy,the biggest steam engine ever built. To appreciate this, you have to look at it sideways (side on)chugging slowly by.The best video I’ve seen of it,is it chugging hard and slowly up a incline pulling a tremendous load.,no incline, or load could best BigBoy and crew!🌺🤗💕🚂🚂🥰💕👍🖖

Was such an awesome sound. I only got to hear it a couple times before they went to diesel
I remember racing through the mountains to get croosing shot of Big Boy in the mid 90s. West out of Reno. Was lucky to get quite a few under full load. Truly an awe inspiring locamotive!
@wesgtx440 I remember it being called big boy. I am not good with time. It may have been late 90s. Was at the reno train yard for a stop over. I headed up I80 west just before it left to catch it under load heading into the mountains. I have the photos somewhere. Will have to see if I can find them.
This is the sounds I grew up with late at nite carring the sounds through the hills from PA into Elmira, New York . Oh how I miss those younger years. Now that I’m 70 years old.
The train mainly emits just steam. Show some respect for the agency that stops companies from dumping their chemical waste in our rivers and stopping our cities from being covered in smog like Chinese ones
What are you talking about!? They used to be ran on coal which is exactly what's burnt to make YOUR electricity, now it burns #5 fuel oil, the same emissions as the diesel locomotives in that same train. And railroad fuel doesn't have the sulfur removed from it like highway vehicles.
They like it better now that it was converted to fuel oil from coal. Even under heavy load or increased grade, it emits very little exhaust which is why some professional photographers are miffed that there’s no heavy & thick black smoke coming from the stack!
I seriously doubt the epa is concerned about tens of meticulously maintained steam locomotives that are only run on excursions vs tens of thousands of diesel-electric locomotives in various patterns of maintenance.
The big boy came through my little town not long ago. I heard it as it passed, was just about 1/2 a mile from the tracks. I knew it was different from the others that pass daily. What ticked me off was that no one knew it was coming. I saw it in a paper from another town showing where it came through that town. We are 20 miles apart, it came through there before it reached here.
There is nothing more beautiful than seeing old steam locomotives. You can really see their power and energy through the steam. My great uncle worked for the railway and he always took us children with him to see beautiful steam locomotives.

You can’t really tell how amazing this engine is until you’re standing next to it and hearing it. I got to see it in echo canyon and it was like I was transported back in time when there were more of them running those rails. I think seeing and hearing its whistle blow makes us think of a time where America build big things and made things happen, where people cared about people.
Some of my greatest memories are riding these breath-taking narrow gage lines with my dad. He would wear his engineer's hat longer and prouder than any kid on the train.
I'm gonna be that guy, I believe this is a standard gauge locomotive and would dwarf a narrow garage. I don't mean or intend to diminish your wonderful memories, like I said I'm gonna be "that guy". 😁
@@lawrencebee5061 You know that really wasn’t necessary to correct me. Can’t people just enjoy a nice sentimental story without having to tell the story teller they were wrong about something so trivial. We went on both trains, he liked narrow gauge better. To be “that” guy you need to be more considerate, sorry. 😁

2 things come to mind. i've seen countless videos of the bigboy and it never ceases to amaze me how much it can pull! and with the whistle being held full blast folks are still standing on the tracks! one tiny slip and the whole crowd gets to watch the worlds biggest steam loco turn you into mush! theres generally only 1 reason they lay on the horn and thats when someone or something living is in the way!
What a majestic living machine ! This steam locomotive historically is what built our great nation ! I applaud the people who make this living machine possible ! The money, the maintaining ,the time spent is a credit to these individuals that keep this history alive for our children and generations to come ! God bless you all and God bless America !

You can preach till your blue in face of Safty but if the ones standing by the tracks aint paying attention to it you can just keep on talking
I spoke to the train crew last night when they rolled into the hotel, Big Boy is fine, and many didn't even feel the train go into emergency. They came through the tunnel, and with the limited forward view, they didn't see the tree until it was too late.

Already been called out, but Jesus people really don't take the 25 foot rule seriously and it sucks. The two women killed by 2816 and 844 are unfortunate but perfect examples of why you stay the hell away from the tracks. These locomotives are fascinating, sure, but no shot is worth risking your safety or life. And that's not to speak of the stress it puts on the crew having to constantly worry about these people.
only 111 comments and of course someone being negative as always yeah its not safe but you can't sit there and tell me if it was something you wanted to get a good look something you are really enthused about you wouldn't do the same. on top of that it seams to be close to a station seeing how slow there are going and I'm no expert but if you know anything at all about trains they don't blow there horn for no reason I'm pretty sure they do it when slowing down to release pressure in the boilers. I'm all for upholding the law but your comment is not only ridiculous but uncalled for go have no fun somewhere in a communist country somewhere and take the negitivity with you
Beautiful, although I'm from the city but I love the sound of a train. That reminds me when my dad took the family for a trip to the country side. Lovely time.

How funny - German here. I saw a documentation about this restaurated Big Boy on TV yesterday. And today I stumble upon this short! I tell you, there is not such thing as "coincidence"! :)
I love this engine! Its amazing! 😊

Love the voice of that engine, the old steam whistle is far better than electric horns. I saw 4014 in Chicago a few years back, what a sight.
Electric horn?
Every four years in the presidential election, every candidate will say that America is great again, and the top priority is to order China to reduce emissions.
Electric horns have been in every car made for about a hundred years. Or am I misunderstanding you? Oh, you mean trains... you could be right.
There is a similar steam engine in the park in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
I can feel the earth shaking through my phone

Mucho carácter.... Mucha contaminación.
We get to romanticize being engineers of those steam engines; the reality, however, was a freezing back, and a burning front! (as per one of the oldsters I spoke to once upon a time). He said give me a diesel any day!

Same with automobiles.

From a Boy and years later I have alway been fascinated by trains! Great video! Love the tradition of a Steam Engine!
when I see steamers it puts a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. RIP pops
Memories..the sound of the train whistling through the night as the fragrance of lilac bushes wafted into the opened window in Chicago.

Big boy? Mid 90s? Did you mean 3985?
@wesgtx440 I remember it being called big boy. I am not good with time. It may have been late 90s. Was at the reno train yard for a stop over. I headed up I80 west just before it left to catch it under load heading into the mountains. I have the photos somewhere. Will have to see if I can find them.

I know the EPA hates this train BUT you just have to love a classic steam engines big boy is fire bro 🔥🔥🔥
Screw the epa
Power in that sound and look!!
I think that's uphill too and the engine is optimising. Beautiful sound!! ❤❤

I think seeing and hearing its whistle blow makes us think of a time where America build big things and made things happen, where people cared about people.

You can see it in Eds eyes he's pissed 😤 those people are way past the 25ft limit but I'd say half the people that are out filming don't have a clue unless they follow UP's blogs about being that close & even if they do once there out amongst others fiming they're in moment of getting that great shot an not paying attention to they're proximity of the tracks an the danger there in..
You can preach till your blue in face of Safty but if the ones standing by the tracks aint paying attention to it you can just keep on talking
People need to stay off the damn tracks! You can tell by 4014 ‘s whistle that Ed is pissed! And he’s having to go slower than he supposed to!
@@rudycarlson8245 Doesn't help that they hit a tree about 2 hours prior lol
@@OxnardLocalRailfan how in the hell did that happen and was she damaged in anyway?
I spoke to the train crew last night when they rolled into the hotel, Big Boy is fine, and many didn't even feel the train go into emergency. They came through the tunnel, and with the limited forward view, they didn't see the tree until it was too late.
@@rudycarlson8245Fireman’s side cylinder drain cocks, I believe. Apparently they had spares & got them replaced relatively quickly.
This locomotive is a celebrity!
What an iconic beast from days gone by!

Gloriously awesome what an amazing machine those folks that restored that locomotive should be very proud
Im surprised no one's arrested for trespassing on the track like that! 😮
It would be a waste of resources
@@PapawsDadillacOEMplus well there way to close
@@gordy3801 I don't disagree there
only 111 comments and of course someone being negative as always yeah its not safe but you can't sit there and tell me if it was something you wanted to get a good look something you are really enthused about you wouldn't do the same. on top of that it seams to be close to a station seeing how slow there are going and I'm no expert but if you know anything at all about trains they don't blow there horn for no reason I'm pretty sure they do it when slowing down to release pressure in the boilers. I'm all for upholding the law but your comment is not only ridiculous but uncalled for go have no fun somewhere in a communist country somewhere and take the negitivity with you
They are at a railroad crossing which is most likely opened to the public.
Beautiful, although I'm from the city but I love the sound of a train. That reminds me when my dad took the family for a trip to the country side. Lovely time.
❤❤ adoro comboios e destes ainda maisa🎉 nodoro😂
Lots of folks competing for the Darwin Award here.. back in the day foamers we’re ridiculed yet they had the courtesy to form a line and behave themselves at a safe distance. These people are out of control! Hope another person doesn’t get killed and the lawyers shut the whole thing down. Come on people!
that would certainly be a nightmare!
Darwin Award. My first thought exactly.
It was nice filming from the "safe" place that the camera was set.
What's a foamer?
@@disc0pat1 Like the rest of us, you could look it up for yourself. It's an easy find. It's most likely what you think it is. 😊
As K told you so this is locomotive in 2024, a shame to us 😢 Here in Rwanda contry in Africa but our vision is on top means electric train so vive rwanda and Rwandans
Very stupid, A locomotive with accompagned removing, so sad so manage our suka
this steam locomotive is restored as a excursion locomotive, NOT a commercial use, US has tried to modernizing with AC traction diesel electric locomotive
