    Tolkien was a genius. Ar-Pharazon encapsulated perfectly the hubris and fear of Men. If he had just trusted the fate that Eru gave Mortal Men he would have known that it was a gift to the second born rather than a curse. Ah the impact of Morgoth's lies still resided in the hearts of Mortal Men.

    I believe Tolkien intended for Ar-Pharazon's role in the Dagor Dagorlad to mirror that of the Army of the Dead. As we all know, the Army of the Dead were cursed by Isildur for breaking their oath to fight for him, and they are unable to die until they fulfil their oath to Isildur's Heir, which they did in 3019 TA.
    Similarly, Eru has "cursed" Ar-Pharazon and his army with "immortality", just not the way they had wanted. They will only be able to end their suffering and die in peace by atoning themselves and fight against the army of Morgoth in the Dagor Dagorlad.

      Interesting theory, however, the army of the dead sided with no one. Numenor sided with Melkor and actually went to war with the west. Interesting that Ar-pharazôn's adventure had a Numenorean steampunk version in the history of middle earth:
    "The teaching of Sauron has led to the invention of ships of metal that traverse the seas without sails, but which are hideous in the eyes of those who have not abandoned or forgotten Tol-eressea; to the building of grim fortresses and unlovely towers; and to missiles that pass with a noise like thunder to strike their targets many miles away.”
    (-History of Middle-earth 5, The Númenórean chapters, Chapter IV)"
    It may even be figurative language, but "and to missiles that pass with a noise like thunder to strike their targets many miles away." Rockets? Many miles away?

      Right into a bloodfest... her dad tried, and failed, to wrest Númenor from its collective hubris but his people were far, far too gone for a single king to undo the damage of centuries of corruption. Had she been, say, rather more forceful and proactive than Tar-Palantir, her dear golden cousin would have surely led an insurrection against her rule, which given how little support she had, would have ended in her death alongside that of scores of civilians. Of course, we know not it at that point the Eldar might have stepped in to help her, but if they did and she won thusly, it would still have required a bloodbath for her to keep her crown. Might have been for the best though, at least in the latter scenario: a few (hundred) thousand deaths rather than Númenor's downfall.

    • @v1e1r1g1e1
      @v1e1r1g1e1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly... possibly not. There are two versions of Tar Miriel's story. One, (the earlier, as eventually published in The Peoples of Middle Earth / The Akallabeth, edited by C. Tolkien) is that she was betrothed to a brother of Amandil, called Elentir (a character developed but never fully adapted into the formal history of Númenor.) The account has it that Miriel was betrothed to Elentir. However, she fell desperately in love with Pharazôn and chose to become his queen when he took over the throne. In THIS version of the tale it would seem that Miriel was no innocent little Miss, but a willing agent in Pharazon's ambitions. Could we go so far as to say that she agreed with his desire to be the King of Men... to even defy the Valar? Maybe not. Upon the downfall of Numenor, it is given that she attempted to climb Meneltarma, but did not reach the summit and drowned. The account does not tell us she was doing so out of piety... maybe it was just a mere attempt to not be drowned? The Silmarillion gives a different version, where she is presented as a suppressed woman. As for the Amazon Rings Of Power Tar Miriel... well... this travesty of Tolkien's work is beneath contempt and unworthy of comment.

    • @AugustusR
      @AugustusR ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@v1e1r1g1e1 Well my comment above is really based on the Silmarillion version, where Tar-Miriel, forced to marry her cousin and give up her throne might have been a good monarch like her father. Of course the one published in The Peoples of Middle Earth is pretty much an alternate universe version (which is which?) and would have made no difference. As for the other one, it is best for one's mental health to ignore its existence.

    The loss of Umbar was grievous to Gondor,... because it was there that Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, last King of Númenor, had landed and humbled the might of Sauron. Though great evil had come after, even the followers of Elendil remembered with pride the coming of the great host of Ar-Pharazôn out of the deeps of the Sea; and on the highest hill of the headland above the Haven they had set a great white pillar as a monument. It was crowned with a globe of crystal that took the rays of the Sun and of the Moon and shone like a bright star that could be seen in clear weather even on the coasts of Gondor or far out upon the western sea. So it stood, until after the second arising of Sauron,... Umbar fell under the domination of his servants, and the memorial of his humiliation was thrown down

    I'm always surprised by the fan art created for Númenoreans, especially the line of kings--just by the sheer fact that they were depicted by Tolkien as beardless and not growing facial hair much like the elves, and yet, so many art pieces show them with beards, I wonder why?

    • @danielcharland1374
      @danielcharland1374 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      My guess is because beards are an easy way to add character (though styling and color) and are easily associated in fantasy with wisdom (wizard beard) or physical power (dwarves for example). Very tempting for those willing to take artistic liberties.

      Nautical cultures in particular often wore beards, for warmth and to keep the salt spray and wind away from the face. Given Numenor’s nautical history and prowess, besides reasons others have already stayed, perhaps there’s a bit of that subconscious artistic bias? 🙂

And when the Valar sent down their warning, what happened? "And in that hour *the trumpets of Númenor outrang the thunder.* " Yes, they're the bad guys more or less, but the first response they had to a thunderstorm whipped up specifically by the Valar to scare them into turning back was to *call their bluff.* Was it wrong, full of hubris & arrogance? The Valar sometimes get a lot of criticism for not better opposing Morgoth and Sauron. But a lot of this is undeserved: part of the plan of the Valar was for Numenor to not just be a gift to the Edain, but for the Numenoreans to be active against Sauron in Middle-Earth. When the Valar went to war directly, Arda was violently changed, whole continents and seas would shift. Even without the remaining Noldor of Lindon, the Numenoreans were more than a match for Sauron.

    And so in Dagor Dagorath, just as the battle was to unfold, the Caves of the Forgotten cracked and open. And from there came forth Ar-Pharazon the Golden and his army. Massive and mighty they were, even after millenia of darkness in the caves. "Ah, Ar-Pharazon the Golden... I remember your sacrifices, they aided me well" - said Morgoth while his lietunant Sauron smiled. The Valar and Elves were worried. Although they had Eru Illuvatar to back them, they still wished not to harm the Secondborn Children, no matter how darkened have they become.
    Silence fell upon the battlefield... And then it was broken by the King of Numenor.
    "Ar-Pharazon the Golden is dead. My name is Tar-Kalion, the son of light. And I will have you punished for twisting and perverting our minds, making us hate our Father and Friends from the West as well as destruction of Numenor".
    "You have sacrificed men to me! You belong to me! " - Laughed Morgoth. - "Eru will never forgive nor accept you again! Eternall darkness and death awaits you anyway!"
    But Tar-Kalion, the Son of Light, had none of it.
    "You lied and fooled me once." - Said King of Numenor. - "You will not do it again. I will fight you in the name of Eru even if death awaits me. If I am to fall - so be it. I will accept the Gift from the One, from which I foolishily tried to run away. What say you, Men of Numenor, Children of Eru Illuvatar?"
    Hundreds of thousands of Numenoreans supported him "Down with the Deceiver! Glory to Eru! Victory of Good or Death!"
    The scream of Morgoth was terrible, when he saw Numenoreans, the mightiest of the Secondborn of illuvatar unleash their fury upon Morgoth and his hordes. And therr was no difference between Elendili or King's Men there, for all of them were at that moment forgiven and rembraced by Eru, as sons an daughters who were lost but got found.

      @@VSMOKE1 Yoystan is taking a wait and see approach to this series. He is certainly not a shill for Amazon at all. He has stated before that if it is bad than he will voice his criticism of it very strongly. He will let it rip for sure. Cheers.

    Like disposable batteries, it seems to me that Tolkien's lesser gods start out with a certain potential power, power that is diminished every time they use it to shape the world. Perhaps the Valar created spooky clouds to scare the Numenorians, because they couldn't do much else.

      No, Eru Ilúvatar forbade the Valar from attacking the Children of Ilúvatar.

      The weakest Valar had more than enough power to destroy the armies of Numenor. They were outright forbidden to harm Elves and Men (and probably dwarves too)

      If Númenor survived, I'm sure he would have. Sauron didn't expect Númenor to be destroyed.
