    Great story.. Love to hear them. i did LP work for a couple years in several grocery stores chains. Being a few years removed from that profession, i still cant shop without noticing everyone and even find myself watching "certain people" for too long, just "to see what they take". i also worked in the wild west times. So many good/bad stories. Made some great friends. And we still have those, "hey remember that one time" phone calls. If the money had been better, would have probably stayed longer.

    When the police officer decided they were not charging the criminal end of it that is the moment you have to release that person. If they want to sit there in Cold Stone silence there's nothing you can do about it and you have to release that person immediately. If you were to hold them against their will then it is kidnapping. It is like that in several States.

    Nowadays, shoplifting is so easy it's unbelievable. Just take what you want, if LP stops you, tell them you're leaving and they're not aloud to touch you or chase you and just walk out. It's easy as that. Who needs to worry about cameras when the people who're watching you can't do anything?

    • @GeorgeLangabeer
      @GeorgeLangabeer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That’s one of the reasons I got out of the loss prevention game. They were starting to restrict us too much. As far as cameras go, they are still a very useful tool in aiding loss prevention. Even if they have to let the shoplifter go initially nowadays, there are still a ton of shoplifters prosecuted everyday because of evidence provided to PD, thanks to the cameras.

    • @GeorgeLangabeer
      @GeorgeLangabeer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it’s not that simple. Thieves talk. Thieves network. Laser pointer or not, stealing is stealing. You let one go & they tell their other thief friends. If you’re the retailer that “let’s them go” you don’t survive as a retailer. Also the mentality of “it’s just a laser pointer” is exactly how thieves start as amateurs & then graduate to professionals. It’s like the thief’s version of a gateway drug. You start stealing small things & next thing you know you’re stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. So you have to nip it in the bud before it starts. That’s how you change lives for the better. Then there are corporate policies and laws to take into account. If you handle stopping someone for shoplifting improperly, it can turn into false imprisonment. There’s a lot more that goes into it, than you can possibly understand, unless you’ve done the job.

    • @GeorgeLangabeer
      @GeorgeLangabeer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had a zero tolerance policy for theft. That word gets around. When thieves know they can’t steal from your store and get away with it, they move on to a retailer that they know they can get away with it.

    20 years ago in Delaware Walmart I saw somebody get tackled. Nowadays in Delaware outside of Wilmington. 0:45 so whenever i leave Walmart or wherever and going to my truck, sometimes I'll see 2-3 squad cars parked near front doors, no lights tho. It's that why they're there? I've always thought they were getting paperwork or grabbing something in a hurry. Or to pickup someone actually caught shoplifting. But then I'd imagine they wouldn't shop on duty and would usually park normally. So they must've been called for a potential active shoplifter? ME lol
    I know I've likely been suspect plenty and once i was taking my time and while on pet isle looking for dog treats all of a sudden a uniformed deputy turned the corner and we actually looked at each other, simply bc she caught my attention. I just figured she was looking for something too. I just continued on and eventually got to self checkout. When i got to register i noticed a small huddle of cops casually talking to each other nearby and thought not too much of it. Then also saw a known asset protection guy about 5 lanes down looking back into the store in women's clothing direction (uhh ok) with his phone camera straight into my direction like he was talking on phone. As i was leaving i realized they were likely there for me hahaha. But wtf, i wasnt stopped, so not sure. Same thing at a grocery store, and as i was leaving i literally walked right past a cop walking in and his squad car was parked in front, then another pulled up behind him. I'm thinking they were there for me again. As i was leaving i stopped edge of parking lot and saw him exit store minutes later with nothing in hand. Hmmm. Were they there to potentially arrest me discourage me, or possibly confront with trespassing warning to not go back? And if either of the times the police actually were there for me, why didn't they stop or arrest me at all? And let's say i did clepto some stuff, does the video or surveillance actually need to witness or prove the theft, and that maybe none were caught in act real time? And did that mean the store called 911 when they saw/recognized me or of the facial recognition pinged me?

    Something similar. Back from Iraq Dec 2005, I was going down escalator in a Target store. A group of Muslim folks was at the bottom, I recognized their language. They collected at the end and did not clear out. Not reacting after I announced myself, I walked through them, with their yelling, until I yelled in their language. A HS football guy tried to man up for them, not knowing the story. Teenage boy tried making girl points with police threats using the security guy. Security guy watched too many police movies not realizing having no arrest authority. The store manager called police and went overboard with offenses that did not happen on the recorded video. A State Trooper confirmed I was correct. Store Manager claim to fame failed. It went south when I told them I would have a lawsuit, complete with video. HS hero was put in cuffs and taken to the station as a scare tactic. Security guy was fired for many similar events. I left with a big screen TV as an early Christmas present.

    • @GeorgeLangabeer

      I totally get why some LPs feel like they are under paid & unappreciated. A lot of people (employees) don’t get how dangerous it can be. As you said, you are risking your life for the company you work for. But for me, I worked for some amazing people and always felt appreciated. As far as the pay, I was always paid fairly. I actually wanted to be a Police Officer when I started LP, but soon stopped that pursuit once I realized how much I could make in LP (plus, make my own schedule). My only complaint (at the company I worked at the longest), was the lack of opportunities to be promoted. There just wasn’t much room to move up unless I wanted to go “main store” and I just didn’t want to leave LP.

      I spent most of my career at ShopKo (a regional retailer). I worked there for 13 years and minus a few corporate leadership regimes, they treated us very well and paid very well. I also worked at Nebraska Furniture Mart (a large chain furniture/electronics store that started here in Nebraska) and they also treated us very well. They treated the LP department more like a mini police department and gave us lots of respect. In the beginning of my career I worked LP for a mom & pop grocery store. There, I didn’t make much, but I always felt respected. But I’ve known a ton of LPs from other companies and just like what you’re saying, I know I was very lucky and not in the majority. @@GeorgeLangabeer Consumer theft is wrong, I personally would never steal and I think it is immoral to steal. If you want something work your butt off and get it. But for me I just find it odd how passionate most of you retail workers are towards consumer theft but not wage theft. The biggest form of theft is wage theft, not consumer theft. Yes I’m sure you thought you earned well, but guess what? Whatever you earned you should have earned more yet most companies would rather pocket millions for themselves and their family than pay their employees what they are worth. You seem like one of the few who actually know how to catch thieves but I have so many incidences where I am followed by an worker or an obvious undercover LP worker and it never not infuriates me because I’m black. Yes because I’m black because I make an effort to dress nice and still get profiled and treated like a criminal. I have had to call numerous managers, confront people politely of course, and take an extra 10-15 minutes to follow them around (yes it’s petty but I don’t care). You’re supposed to observe suspicious behavior. I’m still trying to understand what is so suspicious about my behavior when I’m there to simply shop and get out? I don’t even like grocery shopping. Now makeup stores like Sephora or Ulta? That’s one thing, I can be in there all day. A lot of LP do not know how to do their jobs. They simply stereotype or judge someone due to race and go from there. If they knew what they were doing I wouldn’t be harassed and followed dressing in SKIN TIGHT clothes 99% of the time. My leggings literally don’t even have pockets, and my active wear jacket is skin tight so no big pockets. If I stuffed something in there it would be too obvious. I’m sorry but a lot of retail workers (not you) are plain dumb, so I treat them as such 😂.

      Be proactive, be patient & try not to get bored. Remember in the boring times, that you could have the most exciting day of your life at any moment.
      Always remember, the eyes are the indicator that the hands will steal.
