The trivia object is a can opener from C-Rations, I remember C-Rations from my time in the Navy. Imagine eating food that is older than you are! My mother made Johnny Cake (singular) in a square pan and cut it into squares. Here in the South, that would be cornbread with sugar added. I grew up in Maine where cornmeal was common but grits were not. I now live in Alabama so I have acquired some southern tastes.
P-38 GI can opener. I poked myself in the leg plenty of times when it on my keychain in my fatigue pants pocket. Re Johnny cakes, I add part of a can of cream style corn and omit the sugar when I make mine.
A P38 or P51 manual can opener. They were the standard issue can opener for the US military before Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) became the standard field ration during the 1980s.
Thanks for your very interesting coverage of Johnny cakes. I think that the mystery object is a can opener, often used by backpackers and survivalists, because it is so light weighs and takes up very little space. Some might include it in their EDC kit (Every Day Carry), given that it will fit in a small pouch that can be taken everywhere. Though some might already have a can opener on their multi-tool, if they carry one and not need one in that case,
@@IWantToCook I suspect it’s not a carry on item :-). After I watched your video, I watched one in which he makes homemade MREs and C-rations (just for entertainment purposes). Today he made a C-ration a nd he mentioned that these can openers were included in US Army C-rations.. I searched and found a Wikipedia article on the P-38 can opener, which gives a bit of history about it. So I learned a couple new things today, how to make Johnny cakes and more about those little can openers.
If you’re referring to the salt, yeah, 2 teaspoons is on the higher side for this recipe. You could easily halve or quarter this depending on your needs.
Chef Matt!! 🙌

I thank you for both your service and the ability to eat those C-Rations.

Alaska here, I’ve never had a Johnny Cake, can’t wait to make them on a cold rainy day!
Oh they will be perfect for that. I especially enjoy them with chili, kind of like cornbread. Thanks for watching and happy cooking 👍

It has a fascinating history, and - spoiler alert! - is the topic of a video coming soon 😀

No deletion needed or warranted! I love giving a preview and hint of what’s to come 😀
