- Although I edited out most of my problems in turning this, most of my regular viewers know I'm not a spindle turner. I just have issues with trying to think through a design and then accomplishing it. Though I still had issues, the end result is exactly what I had in mind! Pleasantly surprised! This is Russian Olive. Darker and more coarse grained than traditional olive, it's easy to turn and looks great. Finished with shellac based sanding sealer and Acks Abrasive Paste and Finishing Polish.

You sell yourself way too short, Phil. A person with your skill on the lathe can take any piece of wood and make it a work of art regardless of the orientation. This one is proof positive. I have 5 Russian Olives in my driveway! they are the most spectacular tree! Blossoms are intoxicatingly fragrant in June and the leaves are silvery blue and the tiny fruit can be used for making jelly. The guy who comes to trim them every second year turns the wood for utensils and art! What a tree! You've done it justice!

when i was little, our neighbors had a line of Russian Olive just on their side of the fence. my sisters and i, and sometimes the kids from down the road, would play in them sometimes. thank you, Phil, for bringing back a little bit of my childhood. this piece turned out so beautiful. you have a knack for bringing out the best a piece of wood has to offer.

I like to get a paint strainer bag , fill it with sawdust, and shavings, then shake out the fine dust into a container, and use it for filling cracks!

You just proven yourself wrong - it is graceful, elegant, classical beauty and if Ihear once more that you don't know what you are doing, you will hear me screaming all the way from Australia. Last year our town was surrounded by the fires, I know what being scared is like. Glad you are ok.

Hi Phil, That was a lovely piece of turning especially, as you say, as you don't do spindle turning. The shape is perfect and allows the grain to flow along the piece. One trick I have learned when filling cracks with CA and sawdust is to put one thin coat of sanding sealer around the crack fist and let it dry. Then apply the CA and fill the crack. The sanding sealer stops the CA from staining the surrounding wood to the crack. Look at me trying to give the Great Phil advice on turning. As others have said I'm glad you are safe from the fires and that everything was ok when you got home. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw

Thats the biggest roughing gouge I’ve ever seen. What a beast you could take that gardening 😁👍🏻 I’d have split that along the crack made some bowl blanks and called it a day 😊

Wow, that turned out great. That is a neat grain, I wasn't expecting it to be so dark. I love watching you do spindle turning. It's not in your comfort zone, yet you still do so well. I find that encouraging to always try and retry and retry things.

Okay, Mr. "I can't do graceful shapes" Phil-- You just gracefully and masterfully proved yourself wrong! Magnificently, as well, let me just add. Russian olive wood has a very distinctive smell, one which I find distasteful, but the wood is gorgeous! 😁

Thank you, L W! I do have some glass tubes and have done that a few times. It just limits the size of hole you can have. Most of mine are 1- 1/4 inches.

Certainly a very interesting grain pattern Phil. And the shape of the vase is perfect for it. The grain seems to flow very evenly to the bottom.
Looking at the knots there is one to the left of the crack that looks like a little vase. Also a great choice on filling this crack it does not look like you tried to hide it but more like highlighting it as a feature. The Acks gave it a great finish as well.

Lovely vase in every respect Phil. You repeatedly say you are not a good spindle turner, well, this job makes a mockery of that theory mate, you can hold your head high after this piece. Your vase has great shape as you continue your normal practice of looking for what the wood has to say to you. The grain is brilliant & the filling of the crack this time was a master stroke as it seems to 'tie the vase together' along with the excellent finish. You made comment about not being able to read your name etc, on the bottom. I have mentioned it before & will do so again & that is that you can get silver pens & also white pens. Both would work well for you on the darker woods. Great job from the now multi-talented 'Shady Acres Woodshop' guy. Glad you were not directly affected by the fire. SO pleased to hear that. As always, Don, your comment makes me blush! 😊 The truth of the matter is, I CAN spindle turn but I'm so uncomfortable with it, not knowing or understanding what comes next, that it is a real chore. But, it does open up opportunities for specific pieces of wood so I will occasionally commit some time to it but I don't have to like it! LOL! Thank you, my friend!
This has an Art Nouveau feel to it, probably because of the high shoulder on the urn. The grain reminds me of moire satin with that texture. Just beautiful. :)

Modesty personified. I would have chucked that cracked old stick, but you didn't. Respect. I was dreading hearing you say ' I'll fill the crack with resin' like a lot of the other turners do. But you did the old joiners trick and won. Sounded like a pretty coarse grained bit of timber, a bit like the Elm we sometimes get here in Scotland. Look after yourself and yours. Regards from Fife.

That was a tough piece with the crack making for a greater risk of flying apart...you made a very wise decision which is just another example of your talent and eye for design and craftmanship....even the finished color looks "olive"! Be well and stay healthy.
