- Whether time travel is possible is among the most intriguing questions in all of science. Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how time travel into the future is possible through Einstein's general relativity theory.
Time travel is a widely recognized concept in philosophy and science fiction. But is it truly possible in real life? What does physics tell us about time travel? Is it possible to travel to the past? There are some physical theories that can help us learn what time travel is and how it works. Neil deGrasse Tyson explains the nature of time and the conundrums of time travel.
In Einstein's theory of special relativity time slows down or speeds up depending on how fast you move relative to something else. So, for an observer in an inertial frame of reference, a clock that is moving relative to them will be measured to tick slower than a clock that is at rest in their frame of reference. This case is sometimes called special relativistic time dilation. Time dilation may also be regarded in a limited sense as "time travel into the future. The faster the relative velocity, the greater the time dilation between one another, with the rate of time reaching zero as one approaches the speed of light.
While some physicists argue whether time travel is possible, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli thinks that time is in fact illusion and our reality is just a complex network of events onto which we project sequences of past, present and future.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is quite possibly the most famous astrophysicist if not the most famous scientist of our time. He is a science communicator and author and he explains in layman's terms whether time travel is actually possible. Neil deGrasse Tyson has written numerous scientific books, his latest is "Letters from an Astrophysicist".

I've always hated this "Time Dilation" thing @3:32 because it's difficult to comprehend, but my neighbor explained it to me a bit more clearly today. ..

Time-travel may not be possible in the manner we expect it. But we must look at technology and not ignore the nature of our physical environment. Perhaps the key is hidden in the latter.

The concept of quantum entanglement states an object will have an existing and non existing state. This nullifies the Grandfather paradox, So in one entangled state, the Grandfather will be dead and in other not-dead hence, allowing you to exist in one case and not in other which ultimately is allowing time travel to exist.

Was in an elevator going to the first floor.. the elevator door closed and is moving..know it is moving and felt it moved.. saw the light on the elevator change .. but when the elevator door opened and was still on the 2nd floor..
theoretically anything which is not at the very centre point of the big bang in our universe is currently time travelling as the universe keeps expanding.

It's not possible. In either direction. Time doesn't exist. There's no traveling "through it" as if it's a substance or something. There's no "it" at all.

It is more like moving vast distances in space, to look at an object which was previously further ahead of you in space, doesn't have anything to do with time. I'm starting to believe it is a one way street. And I believe if a time travel machine is invented. It may be one that takes you only as far back as the creation of the machine hence why there are no time travellers from the future as they can only time travel from the moment they invent it onwards. This fits well with the idea of using black holes to go back in time as the black hole would only take you as far back as it's inception on the other side

This video literally explains of what happened in Interstellar (2014) movie. How they used a black hole to move forwards in the universe. And how staying 1 minute in the planet they landed on resulted like 10-20 years in Earth.

I think it's much simpler. It's never going to be a paradox. Time moves at the speed of light. That's why time stops if you travel at the speed of light. Even if you survive the round trip back to kill your grandfather and came back, the timeline you killed your grandfather is moving into its future at the same speed that your timeline you came back to is, and the two will never intercept. Wait 50 years and go back to that time line, you'll see you don't exist there and you had created an alternate timeline. If we ever discover anti graviton, the best we could do is visit either the past or the alternate timelines we have created.

So if you traveled back to the time before you traveled around the black holes, and then didn't travel, would you double yourself?
Yes and no. I THINK THAT if you started a time travel in a black hole, as an example, you would be only able to go to the future and go back to the time where you started the time travel.
If traveled today, 30th of April and went to 2077, you would be only able to go back to 30th of April of 2021 because that’s the time where everything started.

What I got from the going back in time is that you cannot change your own past enough so that you do not exist because you would not be able to reach the point of being able to go back in time to begin with. Unless of course you pretty much can hack that and just end your life at that moment if the change meets the point to where you decide to go back in time. In essence I think the question is if you are in the moment and can go back in time you are using the real life Control + z or undo function.

You altered the events, but since time would necessarily flow linearly for time travel to be possible in the first place your actions could never catch up to affect you. here's how I view time
if you travel back in time, to the year 1960, you just deleted everything that comes afterward. if you killed your grandfather, you wouldn't be born. but you still exist in the year 1960.
Realistically, what was said in end game is as close to the possible truth there is to time travel. If you traveled back to 1960 and killed your grandfather then it wouldn't kill you because you had to been able to be born to arrive at that point in time. So when you killed your grandfather, it would have been after your grandmother became pregnant with your mother or father. Time works as a web of connected events in an endless stream of possibilities. You cannot stop what has already happened because the energy is forever flowing around us. We cannot control time but we can move with it. Forward or backwards is up to time not us. What is backwards to us could infact be the path time is taking us forward through the events of our own lives.

So theoretically if one could indefinitely travel at the speed of light one could possibly live forever??
Well yes but actually no, for an observer outside relative to u, u seem to age very slowly or even not aging at all. But from ur perspective u would seem to observe time go as it is.
The problem arises at the fact that if you are travelling at the speed of light or beyond it, light freezes for you. You cannot see anything around you and you might get stuck in time as you would not know when to decelerate.
A solution proposed was to use a computer to decelerate you but the problem now arises is that if you are close to the computer, you warp time itself due to your speed for everything around you, hence rendering your calculations useless.
Then there is also the fact that if you want to travel at or higher than the speed of light there are only 2 possible ways:
1. Warp travel which requires the use of reverse bosons(or anti matter) which are impossible to wield in the presence of matter.
2. Accelerate to light speed which is not possible too. As you speed up you require more and more energy and just as you hit the speed of light you need infinite energy. And that is not possible.
Photons do contain infinite energy and if we somehow were to develop technology to wield it, we can only travel as much. To prevent being squashes you must accelerate slowly and as you accelerate time slows(not stops but does slow down) and this decreases the amount of energy let out by a photon. So after a while the energy you get is no more infinite so you cant hit the speed of light.

@@Rhovanion85 If you are moving at the speed of light, light freezes for you because you move with it. Meaning that it does not hit your retina, meaning that you cannot see.
I believe so, but only forward and its not so much travelling" as it is "skipping" or like anti aging. I imagine if we ever reach type 2 we'll set up livable colinies around black holes to take advantage of the slowing effect the insane gravity has on time.
One reason i want time travel: I would love to go back to my childhood with the knowledge I have right now, and see all my old friends.
One reason why I think it’s a horrible idea: simple as this, the butterfly effect. Someone somewhere will do something and completely alter this entire reality and change it as we know it. And not for the better

Of course it’s possible. Just because we don’t know how to doesn’t mean we can’t. The brightest minds at one time said we’ll never need more then 6 computers world wide when they built the first ones. The brightest mind once said we’ll never fly, it’s impossible. There are thousands of things we have now where the brightest minds said it was impossible. So I’m going to allow my dreams to flourish and know one day instantaneous travel both forward and back through time is possible, warp speed is possible, travel through and into higher dimensions is possible. Creating a machine with a screen that allows you to talk to our dead relatives is possible. It’s all just about using your imagination.
Why does everyone discussing time travel ignore movement? There are two relevant movements to consider - 1. Nothing stays still or locked in position - planets have orbits, galaxies have orbits etc. 2. Expansion of the universe. These 2 movements mean that if we go back in time, nothing will be in the same place that the traveller started out - by many billions of miles. Time travel will therefore send us somewhere else entirely. The expansion of the universe is extra interesting because it only expands going forward in time - go backwards in time and it shrinks!

Why would it? Memory is a function of nerves getting used to firing a certain way. If those physical changes were undone, couldnt it syand to reason that your whole body would de-age accordingly?

For a person to say time travel is not possible shows their scientific and philosophical ignorance because each and everyone of us are time travellers right now. We travel through time every second of every day from conception and beyond. You are traveling through time right now. You have travelled through yesterday (your past) which the day before was your future, eventually arriving at your present location in tangible reality right now. The question should be can we travel outside time. The answer is yes you can. There are three-time continuums. Earth Time, Space Time, and Spiritual Time. We can travel in and out of Spiritual time using your soul. The best book I have read that shows you how to understand it and actually do it is the book ‘Phenomenon’ ‘Before Conception and Beyond’ (Amazon) by a guy called Neil Fulcher. This guy regularly travels outside Earth Time into Spiritual Time and he explains in this philosophical novel some of his experiences while in an Out of Body Time Experience should the reader wish to try it. Here's my thought on time travel. Let's say I travel 100 years in the past. The spot where I stood will have moved due to the ever expanding universe and how the earth rotates around the sun.
So my thinking is I might move 5 ft forward, backward, side to side, up, down. How would that get calculated and where would I stand to be in that spot when I arrive? Or if there's an object where I should end up what happens then?
Now do this to 1000 years forward. I might just end up off planet ain't no one got time for that!!!!

2013 was the year I put braces on my teeth for the first time when I was little. And it's going to be 10 years that I had braces on my teeth.

I read a paper stating that traveling back in time can only bring you as far back as the conception of the “machine or equipment”, because if it wasn’t created then it wouldn’t exist in the first place. So you cannot travel further back than the conception of said “machine”.
So, to my question, If said “machine” were to be invented, can one then send this “machine” to the future, since it is easier to travel to the future. And have the future me send back the winning lotto number for power-ball on Saturday??

I've heard of 2 different theories in regards to time travel.
Speed affects time, and gravity affects time.
But what if these are both one and the same?
Gravity is of course pulling us in a set direction, and everything is constantly moving.
We understand speed and gravity as they're defined, but how do we know that the 'speed' has to actually involve moving? Gravity pulls us down to the Earth, but we aren't moving because we're on the ground.
What if, to the laws of space/time, the force of us pushing against the Earth is regarded as both speed and gravity?
To better explain, imagine being on the verge of being pulled into a black hole. You're right at the sweet spot where the force pulling you in is equal to your exit velocity, keeping you constantly at the same distance from the black hole at all times.
You're moving, and also not moving, at the same time.
You're being pulled in, but also pushing yourself away, and remaining still.
This is probably something that holds no significance to the matter, but I found it interesting to think about.

The Earth is constantly rotating at an incredible speed, as well as orbiting the sun at an even more immense speed. The sun is also orbiting the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and the Milky Way (i believe) is also moving throughout space.
We're in a constant state of movement, no matter what. Which also makes me wonder, if speed affects time, then what would happen to something that is 100% still in space?

Once you leave this reality and the considerations that govern it Time is nonexistent and only sort of speak all at once past, present, future rolled into one.
If you could travel back in time, to stop a paradox you might also have to travel the equivalent amount through space. If you travelled back 10 years, you would exit the wormhole 10 light years away from where you entered. You couldn't possibly break causality then... could you?
