Hard neck garlic will bloom and produce garlic scapes that should be cut, and used in stir fries or as pesto, so that the flower will not draw nutrients from the plant reducing the size of the bulb. When the garlic is ready to harvest the leaves will start to dry at the tips. Soft neck garlic will not bloom but will produce several layers of cloves where the hard neck will produce only one layer of much larger and more flavorful bulbs. Soft neck garlic does better in warmer climates and has an advantage in longer storage times.
Hey Kylan! One thing I'm not sure I mentioned here with the garlic is the need for loose soil to allow the bulbs to mature. The soil in our beds is an even mix of sand, compost and native soil. Glad you're enjoying the outtakes at the end. We try to have fun, because there's a lot to do around here and you need to keep it all in perspective!
Garlic with vodka - latvian (and russian, lithuanian, finnish, norwegian) recipe for getting rid of a cold (sniffles). Tastes great even with simple bread. Second favorite plant, next after tobacco and potat. I can produce dinner with garlic and potat only, even without meat. Even if I am drunk and lazy, after 2 days in boathouses. :-D
Oh my goodness, this is great! I must admit, have never heard of this cold remedy. I'm pretty sure we need to give this a test run once the garlic has had time to cure.
Thank goodness for your content! I was trying to look up an older video on garlic you put up few years ago so this is perfect timing....and the fact my 1 garlic is little like the scallion size is good to know it's still ok...so I took it out of the trash :). Thanks yet again for your videos!
I’ve seen people braid the leaves so all the garlic heads are in one long braided rope. I like the look of that, but I’m wondering if it’s less likely to dry properly that way. Or is it the soft-neck variety that’s dried like that? Anyway, I’m gonna try garlic for the first time this fall so I’m glad I found your video in time to add it to my fall plan. I usually remember it when it’s too late to plant 😅
I've seen that before too, it does look really cool! Too time consuming for us right now lol, we tend to go the "lazy" route on things right now. Not sure on the drying, the ones I've seen seem like they would get plenty of air flow to dry them. Glad you will get to plant some this fall, we tend to be late when it comes to planting most things lol!
Garlic is one of my most favorite things to eat and I almost never grow it, lol. I always forget in the fall to put it in. We live 2 hours away from the hub of garlic production, Gilroy California.
Oh man, you guys are in prime country for garlic...and just about everything else for that matter! The advantage we have here is October is prime planting month for our Winter beds, so it's easy to remember the garlic.
Pretty crazy, huh? These were all planted from store bought garlic heads, so they're definitely some variety of hard neck garlic, but they really do look more like leeks!

Great information, thank you so much! We have grown garlic only a few times and still learning!
thanx now i know which one to try
great video!
Glad you enjoyed this one!
I use a fork rather than a spade. It makes it easier to work in clay soil.
That would definitely makes things a bit easier!
👍
Thanks Brandon!
Thank you!! I was wondering what those little leaves were! Time for me to harvest!!
Phoenix
Hey Barbe, glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you have a great harvest!
Haha I live the endings! 🤣 I planted my garlic in November this year. It was very warm this winter and my garlic looks scrawny.

Nice! ... that should keep the vampires away for a while 😉
It's all you smell when you go in the outbuilding, smells so good!
Gilroy Garlic Festival is nuts .
Oh boy, I can only imagine! That would be a cool festival to go to!

Perfect, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And glad you were able to save that little one!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm well, that’s totally understandable that you “go lazy” you have an entire farm to work. I would too. 😁
Wonderful! Would you do anything different next time you grow garlic?
Hey Rana! Depending on the head size we get with these, the only thing would maybe next time go with a known variety.

Excellent video, I have 150/160 in ground. I got seeds from grocery store
Thanks Abid! Wow that's a lot of garlic.... You should have a great harvest!
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm ,We eat lots of garlic
Never seen that kind of garlic looks more like leeks

Very interesting. I would like to see one peeled open like you see in the store. You must be so healthy. I🤍garlic!🧄🧄🧄
Great suggestion! We will try to remember that when they are done and get it on video. We love garlic too!
