      Hey Barbara! You're really going to enjoy those blackberry bushes. You can see just how much production those are putting on and that bush started as a single stick no bigger than a pencil 18 months ago!

    It seems like the everbearing mulberries are a little harder to pull off than others. The black pakistani fall off if you look at them directly! I think the tarp would work really well with them.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alan! I'm glad you mentioned that with the Black Pak. We've been frustrated wit those as the only time we see fruit they're either green or tinged red and purple. However, we've had some incredibly consistent, strong winds the last few weeks, so we're probably losing them to the wind.

      Rosie really is living up to here name. She literally wants to be with us everywhere we go! You're going to love that Prime Ark. Haven't tried the Arapaho before, so you'll have to let us know how it does for you!

    All right, kids, fight nice!: ) do you wanna warp poor Rosie's mind? !
    Glad the black Schifferstadt radishes are doing well and that you like them. What's still in the garden is almost done blooming. Because of the heat, any new pods are garden snacks.
    How I wish that Columbian blackberry had survived last summer. The smoke was bad, and it looks like this summer will be bad, as well, but nopale are in bloom! The mesquites have above average blooms, and that looks like a good, sweet harvest. Not even severe winds are damaging them.
    You encourage me to buy another Columbian, and this time, it'll get babied. hasta!

      The radishes were fantastic in our salad, thank you again! The Columbian has been a slow grower compared to the Prime Ark, but definitely worth it!

      @marschlosser4540 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm I'm looking for another Columbian. Given how well everything is growing, it might be a great summer for it all. I added a little sulfur to the beds the blackberries are in because a calamondin (2 year old) in one bed has chlorosis of the leaves. The blackberries were put in in early summer, and most are doing well, but not growing much thanks to the wind. one, planted where the Bordeaux fig kicked the bucket, also died. Not the dog, because there's a lot of thorn brush on all the beds. Ground squirrels, maybe.

      @marschlosser4540 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm No, the bed was dug only a few years ago. There may be a hollow spot, or ground squirrels. The soil was fill and much of it sandy. Onions (i'itoi) a few feet fro0m that spot are fine. hasta!

    Just found your channel. I live in Bullhead city Arizona and the soil is so hard and it’s about nothing but rocks. I’ve ordered a bunch of seeds but I have to plant them in regular soil from the store

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Margaret! I've been through Bullhead City a few times and you have some tough weather conditions out that way! As for soil, we like the Kellogg's soils from Home Depot. Either the potting soil if you're using pots or the Amend for amending in ground beds, etc.

      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pamsgarden213 I think that's a solid plan. This time of year is tough on just about anything going into our hot/dry months. You may want to up pot it into at least a 5 gallon pot if you can and keep it in mottled sunlight. Under a larger tree would be ideal. It will probably need daily watering.

    Nice to see ya bringing in great harvests.
    The late freeze took out all the loquats and most of the mulberries here... fruit, not the trees... so I'm jealous.
    We're about due to see your second new baby goat soon I believe. Seems like it was about a month ago when you said she'd arrive in a month.
    Now, about the puppy...

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's nice to see the farm finally starting to produce. We have a few misses here also because of some late frosts. It seemed to effect the apples the most, but they were young trees. One of the many reasons we grow such a wide variety of cultivars. If we lose one type of fruit or another, we still have others to count on. We're hopeful to have Violet by the end of the month. Now, about that puppy....:)

    caught my attention on farming Arizona, plenty sandy like in the Philippines...To enrich the soil we use as thick a layer (over wintered) of fallen tree leaves (leafs?). these break down and help the soil retain moisture and attracts worms which add to the microbes in the soil and also keep the soil airrated (sp). also, a worm bin/compost tumbler is an easy way to develop rich soil, in the desert you should be able to get a couple of harvests a year

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there John. We use woodchips, manure and leaf matter extensively here on the farm as well and see a tremendous amount of worm activity as a result. It sounds like you're seeing the same results over there as well! It's amazing to see how simple it is to attract life. Nature does it so well!

      Hey Cheryl. It depends on the crop. We're not fans of the radish tops, so those go to the animals. Turnip, beet and sweet potato greens are a whole different ball game! That's one of main reasons we needed to clear those black radishes away from the beets. We're counting on greens from those!

      Hey there Bakka, I'm so glad to hear from you! We are both from the city as well. I (Duane) am originally from Los Angeles and Lori is from Central Phoenix, so we know just what it feels like to go from the city to the country. We wouldn't trade it for a moment. I think the advantage we both have is taking what you learn from city life and translating that into working the land. The reverence for what is created is that much more beautiful in my opinion.

      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Todd! The soil in the 2 bigger blackberry beds is mostly woodchips with a small amount of compost that we let breakdown for a year. I will link the video for you below. The garden beds and the smaller blackberry bed are a sandy loam mix we got from Pioneer, which has no life that we have building with cover crops and woodchips. As far as the turkey eggs, we have not sold any but would be open to it if you want some. You can email us if you would like to.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

      They are really hard to beat Alan. You'll want to put them up with your garden beds if you can find the space as the flood irrigation may be a bit tough on them. They should both be pretty easy to find online right now, but if you hang in there until Fall (the next time it's safe to plant these) we may have at least the Prime Ark available for you from us ;)

    Did you find blackberries that are good for AZ soil or are you growing it in garden soil?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 2 varieties that have always done well for us in the ground here in AZ. The Prime Ark and Triple Crown are solid options. I would amend the soil with those if you're able to. The Columbian Giant you're seeing today was grown in a bed that was filled with our raised bed mix that came from Pioneer (the landscape rock company). It's a simple mix of 30% each - Native soil, compost and sand.

    I agree there a big difference in taste between viriteys of blackberry.
    Here we have the Dewberry, what i have all ways considered the standard wild blackberry. And then the ones every one referred to as catclaw brier.
    The thorns are about the size of there name sake.
    The vines are bigger and mostly grow in wet areas. The berry's are bigger and sweeter than the normal ones.
    No where near as big as y'all though.
    And again if yall ever make it down this way you are welcome to all the bushes and wild grass cutting you want.
