Hi Julian, it is the lack of weather sealing that puts me off, but like you said for the money. Many of the Z mount lenses are out of stock. I recently purchased Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E ED VR AF-P Lens. There is still no sign of a 70-200 f4. Maybe next year. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Nicky, yeah there seems to be a general shortage of camera gear globally. The 70-200 f/4 isn't even on their published roadmap so I'm doubtful we'll even see it in 2022. The 100-400mm f/4 is due soon though but you might not need that reach and I have no idea how expensive it will be. :-)
Great Chanel. Very useful content. Have you tried the Nikon Z mount 28mm f2.8 ? 28mm is my favorite focal length, but need something for low light street/travel, so I’m looking at this Viltrox.
Thanks for this balanced review. I have and recommend the Z-mount 85mm and am thinking of adding the 24 and 35 as I prefer primes for landscape shooting.
I agree with another comment, a well balanced review. I tend to use only native lenses on my Nikon (DSLRS) but used of course. Couldn't justify splashing out on new ones.
Thanks for watching this one as well Eltin. I've got a bunch of very nice Nikon Z lenses but these are my go to lenses for landscapes. But I like to have the opportunity to try different lenses and experiment a little so that's where these Viltrox lenses come into play. I've also got a couple of used Laowa lenses which are very good. Choice is good!
Thank you for your review! I do use Z6, Z fc and Z50, so I have to choose between the 23mm f1.4 and the 24mm f1.8... I do have the Z 20mm f1.8 Nikkor for Astro, so I don't know if I will use it on the Z6 very much. But at least I would have the choice. On the other hand, the 23mm is cheaper and f1.4... Did you have the chance to use the 24mm for astro? What about coma? Did you compare the 24 and 23mm side by side on the Z fc? Thanks, Ralph from germany
Thanks for watching Ralph! Tricky decision when you have both full frame and crop sensor cameras. I haven't had a chance to use if for astro yet, but I will be doing so in the next few weeks. I didn't compare the 24 and 23mm on Z fc...they are very similar lenses, with the only real difference being the design to support the sensor size. I would imagine they perform exactly the same. Hope that helps, and hello Germany! :-)
Very helpful and informative video. I'm currently considering the Viltox 85mm 1.8 for the Z mount and will be very interested in your findings when you get that far. Meanwhile I noticed that you have a replacement eyecup on your Z7 and that too is something I'm looking into having just acquired my Z7 and as I wear specs. Can you tell me please which eyecup you use? Many thanks
Thanks William, glad you found the video useful :-) If you want to see a review of the 85mm do check out Gareth's video - th-cam.com/video/QjwB1ZSZmis/w-d-xo.html The eyecup is from Hoodman and it is this one here - fotospeed.com/hoodman-oversized-eyecup-for-nikon-z-cameras.html
Hi Julian: I just found this video and it compels me to ask a question. As I write this, it seems that neither TAMRON nor SIGMA have manufactured any lenses for the Z mount and TAMRON has been churning out lenses for SONY mirrorless bodies. So, my question is, is Viltrox the only company now manufacturing lenses (other than Nikon itself) for the Z ecosystem?
Hey Paul, it's a question I've thought about as well. Maybe Viltrox have reverse engineered the mount, where as Tamron or Sigma are waiting for Nikon to publish the specification.
Could I buy this lens for the zfc though it might be preposterous on such a camera but it might just add to the fun. I already have the 16-50 mm dx lens
Yes, this lens would work well on the Z fc, but if you only have DX Nikon cameras, then the 23mm version is a better option (which you can see here - th-cam.com/video/6qj9CMz8VDg/w-d-xo.html). I use the 23mm and the 16-50 on my Z fc all the time. :-)
@@tomd4260 It's not the type of photography I regularly do so not had the chance to use it for that purpose yet unfortunately. My next trip though will hopefully present some opportunities to put that lens and my Laowa 15mm f/2 to use.
Remember to check out my review of the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 for Nikon Z mount APS-C/Crop/DX - th-cam.com/video/6qj9CMz8VDg/w-d-xo.html
Interesting video Julian.
Good lens for the price and great images as usual.
Good to see you back on the scene.
Cheers Tim! :-)

Thank you. I haven't tried the 28mm but given my experience of other Viltrox lenses I would expect it to be just as good as the lenses I've tested.

Thanks for watching Jim. Since making this video I have also now acquired the 85mm. :-)

How is it as an Astro lens ?
I'll tell you next month when I get back from my photography trip. :-)
@@jbairdexp ok I'm thinking of getting one for my z7 since the Rokinon 14 mm is not that great

Enjoyed the video even though I am a Canon shooter. Quick question, if you don’t mind, where do you get your photo mounts from?
Of course I don't mind. I have them made at www.pictureframesexpress.co.uk/ :-)
