  • Aloha 🤙 We are going to a restaurant that serves traditional Hawaiian food... and just so happens, to serve the people in Hawaii for 75 years! The Highway Inn Restaurant at Kaka’ako. Kaka’ako is an urban area in Honolulu that is known for its street art, hip vibes, Farmer’s Market, and the park is lovely to picnic at.
    But right in the center of it all, is my favorite Hawaiian Restaurant. In this video, we are going to be eating Traditional Hawaiian food, Kulolo, and onolicious Hawaiian pancakes drizzled in Ube sauce 😋
    Locations of the restaurant and places nearby are down below👇
    Food items and prices are included as well. Don’t forget to check out the original Highway Inn location in Waipahu. I'll leave the website and address there too! I think I have everything covered now. Please leave me a comment under this video if there’s a food place I should check out. I might review it in a future video ☺️

    Hawaiian food is one of my favorites! I was lucky enough to have been partially raised by an aunty who was 50% Native Hawaiian and lived in Waianae and had her own imu in her backyard. It was bust ass work clearing out that thing and loading it up, but she made the best kalua pig ever. We also used to catch our own ika (squid) and tako (octopus) and she would make squid luau from scratch, with the laulau leaves and coconut milk. she also taught us, me and my kid bro, how to husk and crack open coconuts just using a rock and that came in handy when we'd go crabbing and had a bunch of coconuts on the ground...we'd drink the juice there, but then we'd take the coconut meat home to dry and roast, it makes for a delicious snack. 😁 Native Hawaiian people are brilliant at making delicious food, whilst also not wasting food. I'll always have the utmost respect for Hawaiian cuisine and culture...I'm so glad that the White Americans weren't able to erase Native Hawaiians like they tried to back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

      Aloha Sean! Thank you for telling me the story about your Aunty and how she had her own Imu in the backyard!! Soo awesome and I'm jealous of the coconut treats you have. Thank you for linking the Hawaiian food with the culture through your experience. I appreciate it and our culture will always live on. Thank you very much for your story. 🤙💯👍

    Is it true that McDonald's in Hawaii actually fry their apple pies? Here in California, the apple pies are baked. It's supposed to be healthier but I prefer the pies to be fried!

      Aloha Kevin! Yes, in my other Food Tour video, I mention that Hawaii is the only state with a deep fried McDonalds Apple Pie. Mahalo for watching!🤙👍

    Thanks for the vlog on Hawaiian food! I've only had the sampler entre at Highway Inn and was not aware of the other items. Mahalo! BTW, the neighborhood is named "Kaka'ako," not "Kaka'oko."

    You pronounce Laie like I do and my hānai sister in Hau’ula told me i say it wrong. She says it’s “Lie-aye” but she is from Texas so who knows. You from Kāneohe and local so you would know, eh? So what is it?

    • @SeanKaleponi
      @SeanKaleponi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Laie is the way you pronounce it. Because all the other locals I know pronounce it that way. Lol. Not one person corrected me so I'm assuming that's how you say it💯🤙

      I didn’t mean to disrespect you, what I meant was you take to long to explain the food when you describe it.
