- Need some help getting to grips with Surrealism? The Doctor will see you now.
Peter Capaldi, a former art student, and the latest actor to play Doctor Who, settles down on Freud's couch to deliver his wry take on the Surrealist movement.
'Unlock Art' is Tate's new short film series, offering a witty inside track on the world of art.
Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi joins forces with rock duo The Kills, comedian Frank Skinner, Girls star Jemima Kirke and other celebrity art fans to introduce some of the big ideas that have shaped art history. A new film is released each month, with topics ranging from the history of the nude and the nature of the art market, to Pop art.
Unlock Art is a collaboration between Tate and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts.

I could listen to Capaldi explain things for hours, tbh.
The Doctor should really narrate more documentaries.
Note the suit. Narrators always wore great suits.
Nice to hear one the doctor’s legendary lectures from series 10
How has it taken me this long to discover this video?!? I think Peter Capaldi is the perfect narrator for these sort of mini-documentaries and I really felt I engaged with what was being said.
So I guess the Doctor wanted to start his Curator career early?
Thumbs for those that watched the day of the Doctor lol
We need Peter Capaldi back. Best Doctor ever. )-;
What?! No! David tannent was the best
@@orinattiv No Capaldi was Better!!
capaldi was the best.
Literally one of the doctors lectures
So great to see a programme on Surrealism. As I love Dali's work..
So great that it was Peter Capaldi talking about it, he's a superb actor(and will be a great Doctor, I just know it), very knowledgable and I've seen his fan art for Doctor Who, it's pretty brilliant.
Thank you for this. Very well presented.
I need to d a video presentation on Surrealism. I really wasn't expecting the Doctor to help me out on this.
same
I need to paint something surrealist and had no idea wtf surrealism was lol
The Doctor could narrate anything and I would listen
Love ❤️ Capaldi
Looking for surrealism ideas and found the Doctor great :D His voice is so nice~~
I can relate intensely
Nicole Song yeah, right! The Doctor never ever speaks like that. (At least, I've never heard any Doctor talk of sex!)
+Melissa Hash also his voice is deep and rumbling, and he has a great accent :P
Haven’t seen this video in a while. Thought I’d be back to hear Peter capaldi’s dulcet tones.
Surrealism is life.
YES
"Who put those notes and phrases together? Who really composed..Beethoven's Fifth?"
I love surrealism! I spend a lot of time on deviantArt in traditional art > paintings > surreal and traditional art > drawings > surreal. Love busy chaotic, pieces and abstract pieces too! It's fun to explore them and see what they bring to mind, what messages they have for me. Let your eyes unfocus sometimes and you'll see other things too.
His voice, the way he speaks and articulates every single word is very soothing. How can you not like the Scots?! :)
Let Peter Capaldi return as the Great Curator !
Any whovians out there? this is massive!
I'm here!!
mee
Here! Also I've met Doctors 1, 7, 10, 11 , 12
Surreal visual art is the best kind, so interesting.
Tanx for helping me study for my test, Doctor
Oh I remember how this helped me out in art school! Way better explained than my teacher. Well, honestly, I could listen to Peter Capaldi talk all day. And my favourite Doctor talking about art is just the best thing ever! He should definitely narrate more stuff! Love his voice
Capaldi speaks and I have to listen. Simple as that.
Life nowadays is much more surreal than surrealism ever was, which dilutes it's effect. It's hard to imagine the impact it had in the 30's.
Which is why it isn't relevant anymore. People who think prancing around like Ziggy Stardust is still breaking boundaries need to be sent back to the sixties. Freedom has changed, it's way more real now.
Then surrealism becomes 'surrealer', there is always something that will seem surreal no matter what time period. Of course something surreal in the the 30s may very well be real now, and, like you said, negates it's effect. But still there's always something surreal, whatever the time may be.
Google made me do it I think it's less that it's irrelevant, more that art forms as a whole have embraced surrealism to the point where it has become synonymous with the term "artsy." Arguably that means it has more of a social impact now than before, since it is so widespread, but leaves less of an individual impact since we are so used to it.
I learned about all of this in Art history class. Sophmore year of highschool.
Why is the quality SO DAMN GOOD? I mean, this channel only has 97 thousand subscribers and the quality is on par with a MILLION subscribers! Wow!
Peter, can you stop saying "sex" over and over again in my ear... oh god...
lmao relatable
Cut it out, burn a CD, put it in an player and press "auto repeat" But I would like to have "apple" "head" and "birds", too on it! So, that's what I did ....
'luxuriant' as well?
He's having sex with my ear. His voice is so fucking sexy.
Actually... keep going Peter.
Well, if there's anyone that understands Surrealism...it's The Doc...
Through these eyes, I see the world.
Peter could easily read the bleepin' yellow pages & it would make me #MeltIntoAPuddle!!!
this is true
My friend said that once they played a video about surrealism in class, and then she squealed because it was presented by Peter Capaldi.
I'd squeal too but I'm not in the same year level to learn about surrealism 😅unfortunately
Amazing explanation and video editing, definitely easier to memorize and learn
Who better than the Doctor to explain surrealism?
Was Freud right? should art have taken this route? By talking about deconstructing the subconscious, Freud accidentally got people to merely illustrate and celebrate it. 'Oh well, nobody's perfect' as Marcel Duchamp would say.
I can listen to Peter Capaldi all day, he has those eyes that say, 'Pay attention, or you will stand for the remainder of the lesson.'
Sound Design for this video was awesome!
"Freud believed the primary motivation for all things in life was sex"
Me, an asexual: *looks at the camera like I'm on The Office*
Sex, or lack thereof ?
Could you explain line two a little more? Perhaps appreciation of The Office is required, but then there's the U.K & U.$ version.
@@hookbeak3516 It's just an internet thing people say when they want to express disagreement I guess, like breaking your own 4th wall. You could just look it up on TH-cam I bet there are some compilations about that
Yessss
and death
He is doing it as 12 ❤️❤️
This is an excellent peek into the unconscious machinations of our minds...
my favorite type of art work
12th Doctor rlly just assumed the identity of 'Actor Peter Capaldi' so he could make a video about surrealism, chad
BET will play the Doc EXACTLY like this.
Unfortunatly , he did not!
Doktor Who except he did
When he’s explaining things he plays it like this, most evidently at the beginning of before the flood
The Doctor talks about art
Hieronymus Bosch - it seems like there is a conspiracy in the art world to pretend that he was not 'surrealist' even though he nailed it 400 years before the movement began. That's like pretending 21st century hipsters invented beards.
Bosch and Brueghel as well
the best short ever....thanks alot
Man, this was really informative. Me studying Art and History, this was so useful! Simply awesome!
Such a fun way to sum it all up. Thanks!
wow this uni Professor has some great Videos on his subjects
this will always give me asmr vibes
Thank you Doctor, can not wait for August!! Make him dark Peter make him dark...let's see what the Doctor's subconcious dreams/nightmares are made of please!
Well, it seems they have really made it. Have you seen "Listen"?
lol I was pretty prophetic a bit eh? However I wasn't that impressed with "listen"..if you notice when in Rupert's bedroom the blanket pulls off, there is something there that doesn't look human.(pefully more development on that later in seaon).plus how did the doctor's "wards" not know the tardis was in the barn, nor did The High Council notice a incursion stamp the way they noticed he appeared in the Day of the Doctor"...Or not remembering Clara's talk to him at bedside?? or the toy solder??? .I know I'm reading to much into it hehe..but I love the show and want the writing to be as tight as possible.. I have a bad feeling this season will go down in flames if they don't start showing some serious Doctor development..so far it's been chaotic at best..and the episodes are not that great either.. But I say this as loudly as I can, it is not Peter Capaldi's fault, the fault lies with the writing/scripts given. I hope by midseason it gts turned around. I really do.(let's hope this prophecy bears true as well hehe}
ooh, coollll
00:30 RIP in peace
The Doctor is high as fuck, explaining arts and sh-- ... oh wait, he is always explaining shits. but still awesome
Good to see the mighty boosh mentioned
And did anyone catch he wearing his Doctor Who Outfit... well not really but close..
Change his coat to velvet and then it would basically be his then future outfit.
Cool video. Peter Capaldi is a great narrator!
Andre Breton’s manifesto is a must read!
An appetiser of a documentary certainly food for thought at 3.71 minutes long from 5.06 its a bite size amount to digest, but you remember how good it tasted. I was fortunate to once see Dali's Metamorphosis of Narcissus at Tate Modern, London 2004.
brilliant! i will begin writing my music as autonomous as possible
I think that's what The Mars Volta does
Wow the doctor does documentaries
This guy is a G
I love exploring nature, keep it onward!
always good explaining Doctor! :D
Welcome to my surrealism channel!
If only it was longer
Wish it coulda been a longer vid.
Thanks. ^_^ This was fun and interesting.
My art class watched this and I was like wtaf
this was fab
that scene from the surrealist movie is digsgstusting
the lobster telephone looks like the memory worm telephone the doctor used in Time Heist!
i really did not need to see that eye being cut open
Fun fact it is a cat eye not a human eye, does that make it better
Cardinal Richelieu? What're you doing here?
Love surrealism
really enjoyed this short from Tate :) If you enjoy Art you might like this too

Peter saying “Sex” does something to my loins ngl
Awesome video!
A big thumbs up just for thumbnail! ;-)
I saw a mighty boosh photo. Yes mate.
Doctor Who
Bravo
What's the music used in 02:57 when he gives an example about the automatism ?
yachou mohamed Hi Yachou, the whole film was sound-tracked by a composer called Simon Russell
sounded like Floyd
@@Tate Even the ending track? Does it have a title?
I wonder how Sigmund Freud would have reacted to the AI-generated videos we have today. They capture surrealism perfectly.
0:23 what is that pink thing moving ??
You must be a real student of art.
that was nice
Good but could have been longer. Though maybe this is meant to be part of a series?
Hi Justin,
This film is indeed part of a mini series entitled "Unlock Art". You can watch the other episodes here: goo.gl/MVmubk
TATE
Your videos are beautiful
Thanks for watching!
anyone know the song at 1:49
Art is birthed in the unconscious body and heart. That is the home of our innermost treasures of psychological exploration and discovery; the phantasmagorical journey to the quintessential amorous fragility of life. All else is cerebral, linear and logical; the critical mind wants to define and categorize and sequester us from unity into one conscious field. One day we will become whole, and if that terrifies or unnerves you--perhaps you are more alike than apart--just atoms 'n' stuff of the void coming to its own head. Judgement represses character development, does nothing in the long-haul to keep us separate, so free the mind and realize there is no such thing as 'assets / ownership' or control'--it just is.
.
can someone please tell me the name of the music in the background around 3:20
Loved it.
Cannot stand Freud.
Love the Surrealists.... ahhhh.
OK who clicked this because he was frome doctor who
can anyone tell the name of soundtrCK PLZ?
Where is the Malcolm Tucker Dub?
Wasn't it Apollinaire who coined the term..
What's the music at the end
Hi Masoom, that's an original track composed by Simon Russell
what is the music? please!
Wait. Presented by who?
NICE
The whistling music at the end says "Western". I was hoping this would be much longer. Pick up The Shadow And It's Shadow. Surrealist Writings On The Cinema. By Paul Hammond. Lots of great stuff in it. Now get off my zombie, you're blocking his glacier!
I've never heard a pigeon screech like an eagle...
as true as a red cats sneeze.
this comment section is like my schools philosophy club smh
who is here because of the teacher in queens ?
