There are three ways a company does things that I have found in the industry. My technicians have a choice to have an account to buy tools and pay for them out of their paycheck as they go (Large purchases have to be approved). This way they can buy anything they want, but if the equipment isn't paid off and they want to leave the company, they pay the bill in full or I hold their last check/checks, or they leave the tools on the van or truck (We settle up towards what they have paid for up to that point). I require receipts and a PO number/job number for any parts purchased to accounting can keep them straight as they sign off for them.
Then I have the technicians that have all their own equipment already and buy what they want out of their own pocket as time goes on (which I prefer, but I don't like my guys using junk tools on the cheap, so they have a tool allowance like the first sentence). But I get a tech not wanting to beat on their own equipment, but I found that since I pay well, they take very good care of their own tools. Just like a mechanic in an automotive shop. All your tools are bought and paid for by yourself and you take your giant toolbox with you when change jobs.
Then you have the newer technician that doesn't have anything and gets all the basics and that gets them during the probationary period, and we go from there. But I am ok with a Veto bag and digital gauges as long as they agree to sign a contract of employment for a minimum of a year, or all tools stay on the rig when they leave. I won't let someone rack up 10k the first day of work, but each rig is outfitted with inventoried tools and parts needed to get started. From motors, capacitors, contactors, refrigerant, wire of all sizes, etc. I don't want my guys running to the parts house five times a day. As they use parts, they keep the label off the box or write down which items used, and they can pick up replacement items the next time they are at the parts house. My rigs have a nice array of motors, capacitors etc, but like I said, they are inventoried for accounting and ordering purposes.

Yea I don’t personally feel it’s the companies responsibility to provide me with most my tools but I do expect certain things to be provided. More so specifically vacuum pump, recovery machine/tanks, and torches at least. Ours provides a micron gauge, dtec leak detector, and couple smaller things as well. They’ve provided other specialty tools as well depending on what you work on. I have a laptop with mn converter, stratus leak detector, megaflow kit, and a tool that can send dc volts to drive actuators and such. Obviously ppe items included as well.
As far as tools go, having the right ones make your job so much easier and allow you to perform a better job as well. Bag consists of Knipex, Wera, PB Swiss, snapon, Klein, Bahco, and even Icon now. Lots of tools come down to personal preference and having a diverse tool set that you enjoy using makes all the difference!

Use mostly fluke testing instruments. All that being said nobody needs to spend the money I’ve spent on some tools I have to be a great tech. Just want to make that clear. A great tool doesn’t make a crappy tech great.

I am 63. My career has been in computers. Although I've been contemplating retirement, I'm not ready for the rocking chair. I've seen enough of HVAC channels to know it interests me. IMHO the biggest problem I will have is that I have the balance of a toddler (surgery at 20). Ladders are not my friend. I am from a generation willing to work. Do you have a shred of advice as to how I might get into this field, even in a limited capacity?

You might enroll in some classes at a tech school if there's one near You. You probably would not have any problem with electrical troubleshooting which is one of the most valuable skills to have. If you're serious talk to some of the local contractors. They may be willing to give You a chance. I ''retired'' a year ago and I'm already missing hvac work. It's not for everyone but it sure brought me a lot of pleasure for a long time. Good Luck.

Controls would be the best option for you.

@@MrMultitoolThat's a thought. Electrical work has always interested me; I started playing with light bulbs and batteries when I was 2 or 3. I've done some wiring. On one occasion, I did some wiring for an acquaintance in an old Victorian-era house. A licensed electrician finished what I didn't have time to do. When he was done, all my stuff worked, and some of his didn't. Thanks, I'll keep your idea in mind.

I like the uei multimeters over field piece cause they were here before field piece and a lot less expensive than field piece but that's a personal preference and thats just me as far as multimeters and the only brand available at the time I went to hvacr school other than fluke
