Mike Leach has completely taken over football. There is a use for an RB in this system, just not what it used to be. you need a relatively fast guy who can run, block, and catch equally well.
This is why teams like the Chargers, the Giants, and Raiders aren’t going to do shot with their current schemes. They have reciever minded coaches who are too dumb to release they have incredible talents, some of them generational, at RB. Those are talents you build your offense around, and don’t try and wait them out with Franchise Tags and 1 year deals.

If you look around the last 10 years, that position is too injury prone to invest big dollars in, when the top backs haven’t been able to avoid injury. The days of Berry, Emmitt, Payton, and others, being able to survive a full season year after year, have been gone for awhile. All the great backs are used up and lost a step by the time they are 27 now. They got to find ways to stop getting hurt, and their value will increase.

Barkley is a great example of why they cant get paid. Two great years out of five and already closer to the end of his career than the start. Maybe 3 more productive years left and of those three how many will be as good as last year? Probably none.

I assume that they would move that position onto the line as a highbred guard/massive TE. Defensive lines would be blitzing the entire game. It's like cutting the flow of water. They phased out the fullback, and the running back position relys a good amount on that lead blocker to clear the gap. The best way to fix it: Make rookie deals for running backs 3 year max (so they either sign them again for a higher contract or go to another team, if their any good). Have a max number of shotgun and pistol formation plays by an offense in a game.

The CBA makes big contracts possible. Ownership has to spend an agreed upon percentage of revenue on salary. The salaries of teams are insane because the profit of NFL teams is insane. The problem with the RB posistion is there is not much of a gap between the starter and the 2nd string. But there is a huge gap between All-pro and All-time. With the trend to protect QBs and receivers, as well as encouraging the passing game, teams don't rely on the running game. The new NFL is get a premier QB, protect him, and pass the ball. 35-30 is what the league wants, not 6-3 in the big game.

It’s not that RBs aren’t valuable. It’s that they are replaceable. It’s hard to win a ring without a great qb, and great QBs don’t need great running backs most of the time. So why pay huge money to a great rb when you can get solid players at the position in days 2 and 3 of the draft? It’s not like guys like Saquon aren’t getting offers, he was offered 10-11 million a year according to most accounts. He just isn’t getting the deal he wants.
The RB position is important just like every other position they have to run like a well oiled machine. A good RB sets up the pass , play action etc.. a strictly passing league just wouldn’t be very appealing! They need to be paid they get serious contact almost every play they touch the ball sacrifice their bodies !

The CBA makes big contracts possible. Ownership has to spend an agreed upon percentage of revenue on salary. The salaries of teams are insane because the profit of NFL teams is insane.
The problem with the RB posistion is there is not much of a gap between the starter and the 2nd string. But there is a huge gap between All-pro and All-time. With the trend to protect QBs and receivers, as well as encouraging the passing game, teams don't rely on the running game.
The new NFL is get a premier QB, protect him, and pass the ball. 35-30 is what the league wants, not 6-3 in the big game.

The league is just running the money down and get rid of some high contracts. They can't get rid of the RB position because you need a body to block and provide an immediate out if the QB needs it.

I wouldn't exadurate to much on that statement. I would say less used than now. I think you would still have to have it to run the clock out and control the tempo and still have a legit run game.

It’s not that RBs aren’t valuable. It’s that they are replaceable. It’s hard to win a ring without a great qb, and great QBs don’t need great running backs most of the time. So why pay huge money to a great rb when you can get solid players at the position in days 2 and 3 of the draft? It’s not like guys like Saquon aren’t getting offers, he was offered 10-11 million a year according to most accounts. He just isn’t getting the deal he wants.
The RB position is important just like every other position they have to run like a well oiled machine. A good RB sets up the pass , play action etc.. a strictly passing league just wouldn’t be very appealing! They need to be paid they get serious contact almost every play they touch the ball sacrifice their bodies !

Well maybe they should just kind of exempt them from the rookie contract. Don't force them to go through the fifth year or be franchised. Maybe for a running back after 2 years on their rookie contract, they can negotiate and not be put on a franchise tag.
Or just keep RB’s and pay them less. You can get them cheap as Free Agents out of College or Draft them 5th-round or later. Most don’t last longer than 4-years because it’s a brutal position

RBs need a buff. How about they can't get tackled between the first yard from scrimmage in both directions (so rbs can't get TFLed unless it's more than a yard away from scrimmage and they basically get guaranteed one yard) How OP is this buff?
