So glad more people are discovering the entity known as Aesop Rock. Your breakdowns of his lyrics are amazingly accurate and you seem like a very knowledgeable fellow. Please keep doing more. Liked and Subscribed.
When I first started watching I said the same thing. I think it is smoke and mirrors from just reading Genius with a lot of extra context based also on what he knows.
Aesop also mentions the Barbary Coast on The Harbor Is Yours, off the None Shall Pass album. Which is a Daylight/Nightlight style reworking of a non-album track called Fishtales. The Harbor Is Yours is dope. About a pirate and a mermaid. Yar!
Subscribed! Keep doing what you are doing! I'm loving these Aesop Rock reactions. You are the only person on TH-cam that I've seen catch Aesop's bars the way you do. So many people are just confused or mistaken.
I like how before you start listening, you read into the album art, and then seconds later are validated by the song. Aes always seems to reward those who pay attention.
I believe this track, like so many others of his, is him storytelling (usually with some historic context) and then using that story as a cryptic/metaphoric expression of his own experiences. Aes is originally from the NYC area and eventually relocated to the west coast (SF, then Oregon). My understanding is the move was at least partially related to him getting burnt out on the hip hop scene in NYC and the west coast seemed like a fresh start for him spiritually and to kind of do his music his own way ("Go West Young Man"). However, after being in SF for a while, I think he realized that it wasn't going to go much better for him out there either, so he moved into a barn in Oregon and started putting out (in my opinion) the best music of his career.
40 winks, pissy at the grizzly, no lullaby Clark's point trollops off the docks to flood and multiply Until a brilliant golden motherlode in the bank Hold up your drink She said between her legs that other gold's pink
Thanks for doing this one! 🤘 ‘Francis of Assisi in his grave alone to roller-coast’ He is the patron saint of San Francisco- rolling over in his grave at what his namesake city had become. It was so full of debauchery, and was essentially the opposite of all he stood for in his life.
"Ask Anyone" is one of Aesop's latest songs, it's about his (and other artist's) relationship with MF DOOM. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of both Aes and MF DOOM!
The song was done as part of a project with Jeremy Fish called the Ghosts of the Barbary Coast. There is another video with the artwork as well, but the audio quality isn’t great.
The Barbary Coast in this song refers to old Hoboken, New Jersey. "Both Hudson and River Streets from Observer Highway to 4th street were historically the Barbary Coast."
Your depth of knowledge about history and obscure facts is quite impressive. Whether or not you do research before the video after reading the lyrics doesn’t matter. This is what reaction videos should be like. Two teachers AES and Mr L.
san fran is spot on. aes used to live in san fran and in alleys, to know more check out Mystery Fish by him and read into the lyrics. its about his time spent in alleys and such in SF
Jumping Coffin to me is about fear of the unknown and the supernatural among the masses. whether you're an atheist who doesn't want to believe anything beyond what is seen, or a Christian who thinks everything that isn't Christ is a demon, it's about getting over those prejudices and being open-minded towards strange things that can't be explained. The second verse seems specifically to be a story about performing a seance.
@@jordanhyman9877 : That's basically how I see it too. 'Let it in, let it in...' I am just wondering if there was anything else, as in if I missed any details.
i had this pet theory for a decade that Aes was Wiccan or something like that, and then he dropped Spirit World Field Guide, just confirming my conspiracy theory about him lmao
@@TroutBoneless : I don't think he is Wiccan. I so far haven't noticed any references to 'The Mother or the Father', but he definitely knows his occult research. This is why I got into him. I am a former Luciferian, now a Gnostic Atheist.
@@marty7442 yeah, i dont think its wiccan anymore, that was like, None Shall Pass era. but hes definitely into some occult/esoteric stuff, and being more and more open about it as time goes on. My friend and i used to debate whether it was spiritual or psychedelic, and I think now we can safely say its a bit of both lol
This is one of Aesop’s best deep-cuts imo. “And hell, yawning to receive the putrid mass.” That line makes my heart crawl into my throat and stomach sink under my abdomen. But that third verse’s surprisingly sympathetic depiction of the prostitute is such a heartfelt change in the song. Puff Tuff is another easily missed masterpiece by Aes
Yo, i absolutely love how knowledgeable you are about topics in songs, and to pull relatable info about Aes bars is top notch. Give Saturn Missles by Aesop a try.
For more context on Aesop Rock and his connection to the Barbary Coast wars, check out his track 'The Harbor is Yours' It's one of his more easily parsed tracks, with a fun hook and some great imagery.
I don't remember if you've done None Shall Pass, but it seems like it's in your wheelhouse. Dorks is a brutal takedown of mainstream rap. I'd love to hear your take on Rings, or Grace. Crows 1, and Coffee are 2 of my favorites, also ... God! There are so many! 😅
First time listening to this song. Like this specific type of content. Picking Aesop and breaking his songs down is like trying to separate the fruit from a smoothie.

Okay, I like the energy and the delivery is good, but if you pull up the Genius page for this song, It's pretty easy to see that he stops on all the annotated lines and basically repeats what is said there. I really liked the earlier reactions where he jumped around and tried to puzzle it out more.

Agreed! Thoughtful and carefully worded breakdowns make this one of the go-to reaction accounts!!! Excellent work!
It's extremely inaccurate. And Aesope is not an entity but a deity. Please don't confuse the two
By far the best reactor to Aesop Rock!!

Check out Gopher Guts, Shrunk, Blood Sandwich, Klutz, or Cycles to Gehenna next!
Shrunk
Agree with all of em except Klutz, great track but it's kind of directionless and I don't think it would make for a great breakdown vid.
+1 for Gopher Guts
i see a Aesop Rock video i click like and watch. always! Gopher guts or Grace next please
