  • Sourdough can be really intimidating and I think that drives a lot of people away from wanting to try it. Since I changed my approach about a year ago I've been enjoying my sourdough experience (and the bread!) so much more and I'd love to pass that confidence and ease onto you!
Honey Whole Wheat Sourdough Sandwich Bread:
(This is the double recipe, half if you just want one loaf)
1 rounded cup sourdough starter (active preferred)
    1/4c Oil of choice
    1/4c Honey, crystallized fine
    2.75c warm milk or whey
    6c bread flour
    2c whole wheat flour
    3tsp salt
In the evening, mix until relatively incorporated. Allow to sit 30-60 min, then knead 20 seconds on counter until smooth. Cover in bowl overnight and divide and shape in the morning. Butter pans and bake at 375°F for 40-50 min depending on your oven and home humidity/temperature. Butter crust while still warm, best sliced when fully cooled. Keeps 3 days room temp 6 months in freezer.

I think it's wonderful you found a way to make homemade sourdough bread less intimidating and exacting so that you could make it regularly. I used to want to make homemade bread, but I can't physically cope with a lot of kneading. Enter the bread machine. I understand that they're not for everyone, but it made all the difference to me. It's literally why we now have homemade bread in my house. 😊🍞

Oh Warm Bread...YUM.....And Yes, I often do that trick with my biscuits and have been telling everyone that Asks me how my biscuits get to soft and not crusty. Just rub butter on them. But with bread, I'd suggest since they already have honey in them, Melt some butter AND honey together in the microwave and cover them with that before you bake. It should give them a very tasty glaze on the surface.

MMMM i can just smell how good that is even from here. Nothing beats the aroma baked goods make and fills a house with just pure yumminess. I love making bread but I typically use a bread maker machine to help me because i cant stand around for long periods and it really makes it easy to figure out the measurements. looks absolutely scrumptious!

When my kids were little I made 100% whole wheat bread and it was surprisingly so soft and light. The loaves got huge! My kids loved it still warm with peanut butter and honey and my dad used to stop by just to get a thick slice with butter haha. I stopped making it for a while and one of my sons actually got a little constipated lol! When they were teenagers I found out I had celiac so just started buying bread. I couldn't resist the homemade! I've tried making gluten free sourdough many times and gave up. Probably because I was trying to use GF whole grains.

I make bread at least 2x a week. Beeswax bread bags have been a game changer. I still freeze it in plastic but for on the counter the beeswax bags are great. In my family a loaf lasts around 3ish days unless we do sandwiches and then it's a loaf.

This video was quite timely lol. I was just thinking I need to figure out how to make a sourdough sandwich loaf. Our family is 75% gluten intolerant but have had happy success with sourdough. While the artisan loaf is great, my kids would prefer sandwich bread for school.
Store bought gluten free bread is SO expensive, and you end up with like a half loaf. I'm determined not to buy storebought bread anymore. This is going to be a great help.

I'm salivating over here, Heather! Hahaha, I love bread so much. I've been mostly avoiding bread (don't buy it for home currently) due to carbs lol, but I imagine homemade bread is just so much better in every way no matter the carbs haha. The honey wheat type is one of my favs too. I do love crusty ciabatta as well for things, but agree that for most sandwiches the softer buttery crust is ideal. Really loved this very thorough walkthrough with all the tips/tricks and info on how you used sourdough and also changed it up for your family, etc. Thank you for sharing! 💚🍞💚

Being in NM it gets hot here. I've never weighed my bread. Busy moms don't have time for that. (My opinion) Anyways I place my sourdough starter in fridge every night. I take out when I want to use it, re fed it, let it rise, make my bread. Feed it one last time, let it rise and place back in fridge overnight.
I wonder if I could use my kitchen aid with the bread attachment. Looks delicious, can't wait to try this recipe. TY

I’m newish to your channel, so apologies if these things have come up previously.
Are you familiar with the German method for maintaining a sourdough starter? It seems like the lowest maintenance method I’ve seen. Our Gabled Home has a nice video explaining it.
And for anyone who needs to hear this - you can dehydrate or freeze dry sourdough starter as backup, or to more easily share with others.
