Funky isn't just playing, it's a way of life and a personality. Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins have that. Larry Graham's instructional video from the 70s is so cool because of the way he is and it makes his playing even cooler

Mark Leslie Adams of the 70's and 80's r&b band SLAVE.The song"Slide", "Just a touch of love", "Watching You" are some of the tracks from them that had a phenomenal bass line.

Mark KING probably deserves a place in part 2. He definitely grooves, inspired a lot of people like me to see bass as a cool instrument, and had great skill (and stamina) whilst singing at the same time. Percussion combined with melody combined with groove.

Mark King of Level 42 was not only a thumper style of a bass player but can slap the bass as well.Larry Graham was the leader of the thumping sound.He started and revolutionized the thumping sound while many others followed and came up with their own style and sound.The group Cameo had great bass players on their albums during the late 70's and 80's."Be yourself" and "On the one" is another.I can name almost as many bass players that are my favorites.

@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh1465 Funk is a genre that was popular for a while between jazz and disco music. So funk evolved from jazz, and then eventually funk evolved to disco.
@@albertarason4502 Cool, yeah thanks I understood what funk is, but not sure how Scott defines funk bassist. Not many bassists actually fit this genre, though. Except ones in bands known for funk music, like Bootsy or someone. It would be hard to name 10 of them.

Nathaniel Phillips the bassist for the group Pleasure. Their song Glide from their Future Now album was the quote unqoute RITE OF PASSAGE for all young bassist back in the day
Man Nathaniel Phillips played perhaps the greatest funk bassline ever with Glide! The techniques he used had Bass players in awe for years not to mention the way he syncopated his plucks it's soooooo good!

Excellent list as always, Scott. I feel like Mark King definitely deserves a place on this list - maybe something like "Almost There" or "Love Games" - but I'm not sure who I'd drop to make room.
Was also pleased to see George Porter Jr. on the list - I just recently realized that he did the great, funky bass line on Tori Amos' "God" (and indeed the rest of that excellent album). It's not always easy to stay funky through odd, changing time signatures, but he lays down some beautiful work on that song.
Absolutely! Mark King was extremely influential in the 80's and the reason why many chose the bass as their instrument in the first place. Just like Flea in the 90's. I have no idea why he's not on the list...
Brian Schoner Definitely! I would have definitely had Mark King on the list. Songs like Fashion Fever, Kouyate, True Believers, and Love Games are some of my favourites. I understand the limited number and that many bass players should have made this list. Really cool!

James Lee Jamerson played on all the Motown Records hits in the 1960s and early 1970s. He is regarded as one of the most influential bass players in modern music history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. As a session musician, he played on twenty-three Billboard Hot 100 number one hits, as well as fifty-six R&B number one hits.
“The Hook” is one of the best of all time...but this is a funk bass opinion. All genre bassists, of course Jamerson is at the head of the class!
The Band Slave's Mark Adams Bass playing style was unique and funky. No one at the time was playing like Mark Adams and when you heard something new on the radio you knew it was Slave and Mark laying down the Funky Beat.
I would humbly add Stanley Clarke (School Daze), Victor Wooten (Intro/Amazing Grace) and one I personally consider to be my Bass God: Jaco Pastorius (Teen Town)

Hey Scott, Thanks for all the great bass videos of both women and men. Thanks for mentioning Larry Graham. However, what you didn't mention is the fact that, Larry Graham was the first one to bring the slap funk bass to the world. This came about when he was a young man playing at church, but there wasn't a drummer. So, he figured out a way to keep time in a way that could be felt, in addition to playing the bass line. The was before he was with Sly And The Family Stone. It's important to acknowledge to the world that he's the Godfather of this style of bass playing... Give that man his props!!
I have just read a few comments that mentioned Mark King or Stanley Clarke, but I would like to add Leon Sylvers (from Solar Record) and also Prince who was not just a good guitarist, composer, producer or whatever.

In 30 years I reckon Jack and the boys'll've made Vulf a household name, and then Joe'll have enough experience and exposure to back that up. Right now he's an incredibly talented up-and-comer, but I wouldn't say he qualifies for the same status as, say, Pino or Jamerson. As you say, that's all down to time.

Obviously, synth dubbes only the main line, the real bass notes"around" are the very interesting clever parts from Louis.

Let's keep it real: I love the Isley 3+3 immensely, but you're referring to songs more than the bass work on them. There are lots of great bass players that simply didn't fit this list (Wilton Felder, Bob Babbit, etc). With all due respect, Marvin Isley is one of them.

That was incredible, I feel almost intoxicated from all that funk. Louis is probably my favorite. Those Brother Johnson bass lines and Michael Jackson’s Get On The Floor, incredible. And I’m a huge fan of Marshall “Rock” Jones of the Ohio Players.
Leon sylvers defintely deserves a place on the list, he had such a unique style, which are usually 16th lines disguised as 8th note lines which make for some tasty licks. He just strikes that perfect balance between rhythm and melody. He has his well known ones like 'And the beat goes on' and the shalamar stuff but some golden ones to check out are:

Love how you threw Stuart Zender in there. He and Paul Turner are just so damn good.
Finally someone who gives recognition to an extremely underrated bass player, Stuart Zender. Jamiroquai is one of my favorite groups of all time and part of their amazing sound is thanks to their bass player Stuart Zender which is not longer playing with them but you cannot forget the work they did in the 90s with Zender.
Nevertheless, their current bass player, Paul Turner, is pretty killer too and should be featured in your next part 2 video.
I remember being in my teens in the early '90s and trying out a bass in a music shop in Luton just to kill time before my national express bus back up north (my girlfriend was at uni there) and the guy saying oh you'll get a lot of work you sound like Stuart Zender, and I gave him a big list of who Stuart Zender was listening to! :-)

I have come to realize there is a vast difference between a funk (music style) bass player and a funky (playing style) bass player.

There's 2 underrated funky bass players you need to check out. 1 the late Mark Adams from the funk band Slave. And Leon SylversIII. The stuff he wrote and produced and played on for Solar Records during the late 70s and early 80s.
yeah mark don't the recognition he deserves and Leon bass was the backbone of solar records in the late 70s and early 80s

only 10 people go into a top 10...have to make some personal choices... By the way: Larry Graham, Bootsie Collins and Louis Johnson are pretty much the inventors of funk-bass as it is..
