Excellent breakdown of the original of an invented sword to describe different fantasy swords by people historically.

Great video and agree term is more confusing than helpful. One source i know pretty much threw in all oriental looking curved swords called it cimiter and for him case was closed.
There is also the coltelaccio/coltello basically long knife according to boeheim(whom i dont really trust) adapted from the german lange messer. Coltellaccio was back imported to germany as kordelatsch/cortelas and in english its the courtleaxe cutlass. Interestingly they often used this weapon to depict the romans and greeks of old. Some fancy ones of the stortas/coltelacchios often have the title all antica.
Semi-related but marcelli in his book writes that he wonders why nobody writes about the saber when its such a common weapon but he assumes because its often not allowed or not custom of the people which could explain maybe why some information is bit lacking.
Also wondering which one of the sabers is better in your opinion the one kilic you have or the lk samshir? lk chens samshir grip seems a bit long.

What are your personal favorites when it comes to reproductions of curved one-handed swords you either own or have first hand experience with?
I'm always angling for recommendations of good, functional reproductions, especially when they fill an under-represented niche in my collection.

As an anthropology major I prefer using the words from the local language whenever possible. I also feel many people overlook that "gladius" just means "sword" and "scimitar" just means a curved sword from somewhere else. If you showed a European saber or even a rapier to a Japanese commoner, they'd probably say is was a "katana." To modern collectors these distinctions are important, but in the time period not so much.

From what I have read, up to the coming of Seljuq Turks in the 11th century, the long blades in the East Mediterranean were either in Byzantine or Persian fashion. And the Persian (post-Sassanid) swords were - if I understood it - more or less straight-bladed with one edge (and possibly somewhat short false edge). And Seljuk Turks formed most of the armies the Crusades were confronted with.
