F-16s fighter jets provided to Ukraine will be based in underground bunkers and protected hangars in order to protect them from Russian strikes, Major Ilya Yevlash, a spokesperson for the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has said. The military official said the advanced jets will be dispersed on different airfields and airstrips, and mock-ups will be used to mislead the enemy. “Given our modest fleet of workboats, which for obvious reasons has shrunk in more than two years, such measures should have been introduced a long time ago. But, as they say, better late than never,” Yevlash said. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said last week that F-16 aircraft will begin arriving in Ukraine this year, along with trained pilots and maintenance personnel. Addressing the Ramstein meeting, Austin said over the past two years, members of the Defense Contact Group have provided Ukraine with over 70 medium- and long-range air defense systems, thousands of missiles, over 3,000 armored vehicles, including more than 800 main battle tanks. Ukraine is due to receive its first much-anticipated US-made F-16s this summer and its pilots have been training on the jets for months. The planes are expected to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence amid intensified Russian strikes. Ukraine has long been asking for F-16s since the early stages of Russia’s full-fledged invasion of the country in February 2022. According to the Associate Press, Ukraine may use Western air bases when it gets F-16s because the jets require high-standard runways and protective hangars. Kremlin has warned Ukraine’s Western allies against providing Kyiv with F-16s, with Putin saying in March that Western air bases that host F-16s for Ukraine would be "legitimate" targets for his armed forces.

Ukraine won't be sending F-16s into combat for a long time. Their 1st four F-16 pilots are 1 year into a 4 year training cycle. Ukraine would have to be very desperate to put them into combat partially trained.

The F-16s are not donated from the US, but from european Nato countries and also they were made in Belgium and the Netherlands. These planes are now fully functional fighter bombers replaced by the F-35, but still very able to take the fight to the russians. As its Russia which is the agressor in this war, Ukraine can hit any military target in Russia with these planes. So they could hit the Kremlin to remove the source of the evil!

They are licensed by US to other countries, so US gave permission for arms transfer. The F16 will be fine, if the pilots handle properly.
Will they be allowed to strike in Russia? If not it will be a major handicap.

We hope Ukraine takes the right measures to protect the F-16's on the ground a much as possible. This is a HUGE investment by Ukraine's allies and it would be a sin to have the F-16's destroyed on the ground because of incompetence.= and lack of protection.
They can use's satellite's to find them, would not be surprised if they already know where they are.

There are no F-16s in Ukraine. Ukraine still doesn't have any F-16 pilots. The first class of four piloys won't finish the Beginner Course until summer. Note that is the Beginner Course. They still have years of training ahead

It starts with weeks of classroom instruction and simulator flights before pilots get to go up with an instructor in a twin-seat version of the aircraft, the F-16D, then finally graduate to a solo flight in the single-seat F-16C". I'm sure that it won't take multiple years on top of this to polish combat skills.

Why do they keep releasing this kind of information to the public?
Release of such info is directed both towards the Ukrainian public and their supporters, and the enemy. Making supporters more comfortable regarding that everything is done making the the longivity of the gifted planes better, and making the enemy more nervous about these planes that 'will be harder than you think to stop'. In general storing war panes in bunkers is common practice in many cuntries, not a secret in itself.

A fair question. F16 would been safer in Poland. Politically very tricky having war planes taking off from a Nato country to bomb Russians. Would bring Nato more directly into the conflict than wanted. Maybe in future Nato needs to get more involved to stop the conflict

It's not sensitive info. Military air fields are easy to spot, and bunkers for storage of planes are common practice in many locations. The info is first of all to try assure public of supporting countries that measures are taken to better protect the gifted expensive quipment

It is shared to ensure the public/politicians of supporting countries that measures are taken to protect the expensive gifts in the best way. Ukraine wants to avoid someone thinking 'lets not send more planes to Ukraine, they do not do much effort to make them last'. This info being released does not matter to the enemy, military air fields and their storage solutions are few and well known

Realsing such kind of info is done in order to help the war effort in general. It is directed both towards the supporting public, and the enemy side. Making the supporting public/countries that give such gifts as F16, more comfortable that everything is done to make their expencive gifts last longer, to avoid people/citizens of supporting countries thinking 'let's not give more such weapons to ukraine, they get runied so fast as the ukrainians not even keep them safely stored!' And makinging the enemy more worried, 'it will not be as easy to stop these planes as we first did think'

The F-16 fighter jets will actually be stored on NATO territory, namely Poland air force bases. And underground as this video is claiming.
That would be interesting, Ukrainian pilots flying from a NATO country. This would pose a big problem for Russia to destroy them as this could invoke article 5

All you still need to do is draw little pictures for the Russians to know exactly where their locations are. Really???? What about operational secrecy. I note Russia is striking more accurately and its probably largely due to the updates they receive from this type of reporting.

Not an expert, but maybe Ukraine been better of getting 20 JAS Gripen? ; very versatile. Takes a while to learn, but once done, they can basically be stored/hidden in a barn and take off in the middle of nowhere. Very good electronic warfare system onoard.
Those JAs would problaby be manufactured first, not so many of them I guess. There are many more F-16 aviable, taken out of normal service by many countries, just sitting as reserve

Ukraine's F-16s will likely spend the next few years safe in Belgium, Poland, or Romania while they train pilots and maintenance personnel. Training of their pilots has not gone well and is behind schedule. They are a bit overwhelmed by the level of complexity of western avionics.
First will be deployed in June-July
