Alright here's the thing, apparently the phrase "buy the farm" is an expression which dates back to the military. There are many origin stories to this term, one would be death, the other meaning retiring from the military to live in a farm and third, plane crash in a farm. The family of the soldier who crashed is charged for damages. Like I said, I honestly have never heard of this term so please bare with me. If "farm" really meant the death of his parents, I still believe living in a farmhouse was their safest bet, afterall the point of the video is to discuss.
I want to say that Sly is french, but it’s likely that he was simply born in France but is not actually french, here’s why. There’s a difference between american and european raccoons when it comes to the fur markings. Sly ( most likely ) has the american raccoon’s ”mask” markings. European raccoons don’t have the ”mask” markings connected, they are usually two spots in the eyes and sometimes a vertical stripe between them. As American raccoons have a full on ”mask”. But this ”mask” marking can be different depending on what raccoon colony and area the raccoon is from. Plus the raccoons in Europe and France are called as raccoon dogs more than raccoons. As for Sly being in US, I bet he had traveled there before with the gang. But I still think he grew up in France, first in the family barn and then in the orphanage untill the gang was old enough to escape it or leave legally. As Bentley has a degree on engineering, meaning that he did go to college at some point.
I honestly love Sly 4 because of Sly and Carmileta's relationship and how it evolved through the game. They are my favourite cannon video game couple and Carmielita is probably my favourite character in the series.
@@VtnVivi I’ve only played Sly 1 when we used to have a Ps2 a few years ago and even watching gameplay of the entire series, the fourth is probably one of the best in story wise. I mean sure 2 and 3 had a teamwork thing while the first had a revenge plot, but a villain going back in time to prevent the Coopers from rising up while his family takes the credit and possibly destroy all of time and space?! Yeah probably something crazy, though the first game I definitely prefer as despite being the first game it has a deep motivation for the gang as well. I can’t wait for more Sly 5 news (if it ever gets confirmed for once)
Thanks for another video! It’s always great to see your Sly content! Personally, he could be an American, but with an international theif as a Dad would make you move around a lot. Similar to children of military families, born in one place but the move around to places around the world. Love the videos you make, keep it up!
Sly's Father as American meeting his mother who is probably French lady That remind me on how My father (who is Serbian) meet my mother (she moved from Bosnia to live in Serbia)
I don't know but I always imagined that the great Diamond Heist was Connors last robbery (already after Sly was born) because it was his biggest one and I think he would be the kind of person to retire with a bang...
I honestly thought Sly was established as being French until I watched this video. I’m surprised how scant information is regarding Sly’s childhood and don’t know why I concluded Sly was born and raised in France. One piece of circumstantial evidence I’d like to mention is that the writers seemingly intended to have one notable ancestor of Sly’s that represents a country in the Thievious Raccoonus. Tennessee Kid Cooper represents the US. Rioichi represents Japan. Salim represents Arabia. Etc. I don’t think Sly has ever been shown to have an ancestor representing France, and I think the writers may have intended to imply that Sly is “the French” Cooper of the family. I think Sly and his friends’ American accents are a symptom of them being created by Americans. The Assassin’s Creed series has featured locations like France where the people there all speak English and have British accents, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the American characteristics are meant to taken with a suspension of disbelief. Still though, I’m glad this video covered this topic since it made me realize Sly’s nationality is still ambiguously American or French without any definitive answer one way or the other… 👍
You have a point there. Hope we get an answer someday and hopefully get that Sly movie which I’ve heard has been canceled or delayed. Though I have to look into it as I’ve only heard today
fist of all Sly is this is gonna take a long time he is British, Scottish, Egyptian, Arabian, Japanese, Mediterranean which means he probably has some Greek in there, i think he probably comes from everywhere
I think the idea of Sly coming from the US is highly possible and here's why. In that cut-scene Sly says its 'been a while', indicating a time period of more than a year. given that he is 18 in Sly 1, even if coming from the orphanage, it wouldn't have been 'a while'. Therefore, the only other time period prior to Sly 1 is prior to the orphanage, meaning that Sly must have either lived in or visited the US when his parents were still alive. But what really sells me is McSweenys choice of words when Sly visits him in prision. His diction appears to be that of a native to the southern states (being the states east of Texas and south of the Ohio River) which leads me to believe that McSweeny is from the US. Given this information, Sly probably met him in the US as well, which leads me to believe Sly is native to the US. As for the region I'm not sure. There are no discernible indications. As for the farm, I believe the phrase is more used to communicate retirement in the US as it is the 'ideal retiree lifestyle'. Especially given McSweenys demeanor in saying it
Nice video, VTNVIVI! Anyways, I was hoping you would go over this because it has been bugging me for a long time. In Jak 2, young Samos didn't remember having his daughter, Kiera, and Jak was a little kid at that time. But in Jak X: Combat Racing, Samos said that Kiera was just like her mother. So basically I am asking if Kiera was adopted by Samos or if she was really Samos' biological daughter. Hope you have a good day and stay safe!
Sly and the gang are most definitely from the US and I have several pieces of evidence to back it up. 1) Their accents, which VIVI pointed out. Sly's in particular. He has a deep, flat voice that would put him somewhere in the northern US. Bentley and Murray also had to have been born nearby for them to all end up in the same orphanage. 2) The van. The van is a left side driver. Yes, there are other countries that have left side driving vehicles, which brings me back to their accents. If they were from any other country with left-side drive vehicles, they would have easily recognizable accents. 3) Bentley's education. While replaying Sly 2 recently, I noticed Bentley said a specific voiceline in the "Wall Bombing" job. He says "3.95 GPA, suckas." GPA stands for Grade Point Average, a grading system used in the US education system. As far as I know, the US is also the only country that uses GPA. If not, that takes me back to their accents and the van. (Also, only 3.95? I'm disappointed, Bentley. ;) ) 4) Sly's and Murray's education (or lack thereof). Bentley is the only member of the gang that can speak more than one language, a couple of notable ones being Sanskrit and Japanese as mentioned in the first game. Sly and Murray are both limited to English, meaning this is their first language. Yes, I know, there are other countries with a majority English speaking population. Refer back to accents. 5) According to the comic VIVI brought up in the video, Sly hadn't visited Paris until him and the gang were at least 16 or 17 years old. I do believe it's possible for him to have been born in France and his family moved to the US while he was still a baby. But if one of his parents was French, most likely his mom, he would've picked up a snip-it of a French accent or learned some French terms within the first 8 years of his life before Clockwerk murdered his parents. Sly does say French phrases throughout the games, but they're all phrases well known throughout the US and he mostly says them sarcastically. I know I'm replying to a year and 7 month old video, but I'm digging the content and glad I'm not the only ones that likes to put together the pieces of a kid's game like this.
@@VtnVivi Thank you. I figured the US wasn't the only country that used GPA, but with all the other little pieces working in tangent, that would be the only explaination.
Alright! I basically have missed a big point of the series: where is Sly truly from? The video and this description (plus a TH-camr named Sly Cooper who has commented on VIVI’s comment, mysterious) I personally agree with the idea of Sly being born in Paris before moving away. His mum is dead too?!! I thought his dad died and his mother just vanished into thin air? Haven’t played Sly since I think 2017- 2018 and I’m a 2000’s kid who loves the retro stuff and Sly is right in, guess I learn something new everyday!😂 😂🎉🎉🎉
@@insaneedoko999 Fun fact, Sly was originally supposed to be from Paris. But his voice bunched up with all the other things I mentioned in my intial comment, it's agreed upon throughout the fandom that him and gang are from the US.
@@ShadowRaccoon54 really?!! I’ll have to listen to Sly and the gang’s voices again to see if I can pick up on the American accent. But if Sly was really born in Paris and moved to the US, what got that to happen? … I think I have a rough idea on what the farm house was for! As said in the video they built a farm which we can assume for now it’s in the US and the reason Sly met his friends was cause of the fiendish 5 (think I got it wrong again! 😭😭😭), what if Sly’s parents moved to hide from them for a while? Though what I question is what happened to Sly’s mother. While watching a long play that I still have to finish I didn’t hear any mention of his mother being “taken out” as well. All I heard was that Mr. Cooper (I forgot his father’s name and I’m actually just started to get back into Sly yesterday) fought to protect them both. Where was Sly’s mother? Did she pass sometime before that fateful day? Or did she perish when they searched for the Thievius Raccoonus which she tried to protect? So many questions and will we get any answers?!! … I’ve gone off topic again! But pretty much I’m certain that Clockwerk has something to do with Conner (?) Cooper and his wife’s decision to build a farmhouse and move away from Paris. Though there is that possibility he was born in France somewhere, but where? I think the answer may lie somewhere in France or his father who may not be from Paris. I think I got this right as Sly’s mother is from Paris … … right?
I don’t think that the excuse of saying he doesn’t remember can work unless he’s 2 and younger, because in the comics he says that he remember something from when he was three so he has a pretty good memory
Not the most interesting topic, as usual, I would prefer a Clockwerk video, but you write so well and edit so well you keep me interested in matter what you're talking about. It's impressive to turn something on its head!
From the sound of his voice I believe sly, Bentley and Murray are all from America then over time after probably secretly left the orphanage and got older they traveled and settled in Paris France. Sly and his friends very well could be French Americans, I think there homes are both U.S. and France that they all hold very close to the both of them
France could be likely! As for Paris, MAYBE he was too young to remember. When he was born, things got tense, they quickly moved out. His parents probably never brought up Paris well at least Sly never explored Paris until a certain age.
Your household could have huge influence on your accent. Me who's born in Quebec, have a different accent simply due to the family I grew up in. Sly's father who's born in the US, could have moved to France for his honeymoon, Sly getting his father's accent. As for Murray and Bentley, same could apply although a bit far fetched still.
Thinking about the place where Sly's Parents could have been killed and the orphanage... the orphanage had an english name (Happy Camper), which would somewhat indicate, that Sly lived in an english-speaking area (probably the US) when his parents were killed, though, when he states "it's been a while since my last time in the US", meaning, he probably wasn't in an US-orphanage. Adding a side-thing to it, ifthey were in an US-orphanage, they probably would have heard eventually about Mesa City and the business Muggshot was having... scratch that, they probably forgot it , since they were kids and Sly couldn't have remembered nor even seen, who attacked his father... As it goes for his origin, I'm rather guessing, it's american, though he moved to france/paris after he got out of the orphanage, if said orphanage wasn't in paris already. They probably made Paris the "home of operation", because Sly was keen on it, due to Carmelita. How I'd see it: Sly was born in the US, his mother being french, father american. They moved to France, a few years later, his parents got killed by the Fiendish five and Sly ended up in an french orphanage (assuming the orphanage, by mere coincidence, had an english name). After the years in the orphanage, Sly, Bentley and Murray "escape"(?) the orphanage, moved and laid low in an abandoned house in Paris and made it their base of operation. Then, in the following days, Sly would start sightseeing Paris, thus leading to the first encounter between Carm and him, as well as all of the other following events yada yada yada Sly's Father was named Connor, which is a rather american-sounding name imo. Though, what about Connors Origins? What about Bruce O'Cooper, Connors Father? Where would he have been from? Bruce also sounds more american-ish
Based on the intercom announcement made by Muggshot when entering his turf in the first game, it's definitely safe to say Muggshot's operation had just very recently been established. Especially with the Bino-cu-com conversation Sly and Bentley have at the beginning of "A Rocky Start" where Sly says "Something's happened. Where is everyone?" I would also like to expand on the theory of Bruce O'Coop being Sly's grandfather. Surnames beginning with O' tend to be Irish in origin. There was a point in the not so distant past where the Irish mass immigrated to the US looking for new opportunities. Bruce O'Coop could've been among them.
Well interpol had his personal files on hand so it is pretty much a given he grew up in France somewhere for that to be the case however not in Paris due to him never visiting
VTNVIVI yes however interpol had his personal files not just a criminal record it detailed the incident with his parents in descriptive detail enough to find the fiendish 5 meaning he had to be born in France or at least somewhere under interpols jurisdiction due to the personal information about slys childhood that couldn't be found anywhere else
Going from the diamond heist Connor did. I thought there was some mention about it happened in Italy. Probably cause Connor later meeting McSweeny in Italy to entrust the map for Kaine Island. So couldnt that mean Connor origin focus be Italy? France or Italy both are romantic to meet someone. XD' so either or? I side with Sly born in the US and his parents just met in Italy and moved to US. Thats my opinion.
If so, that heist was his last one, which could be possible, think of a big finale for Connor's adventures. If so, Le Paradox's father had travelled to Italy. Sly could be Italian, remember his accent ahahah!
0:12 - Or a little unnecessary since I personally know the answer but I'll see what you have anyway. 0:30 - He's from America, I'll explain later why I believe that. 0:41 - Ah! In that case maybe I shouldn't bother. :D 1:23 - Ah it's great to hear you read out one of my comments in your videos. :) 1:24 - Whoo! :D 1:56 - Well if you end up saying that Carmelita was at her best in the series in THAT game, personally I won't mind too much but I'm sure someone else will. 2:13 - I'd side with Sly, Carmelita was a new recruit at the time but Sly's the one who's had a lot of experience as a thief. 2:32 - Which justifies what J's Reviews said about lines from the 4th game such as "For the first time in my career, I was going to have to let the law catch me! This could be a real challenge." are so dumb. :P 2:58 - It was cheesy but it worked out well in those games. :) 4:06 - Either for a break or for something important, what that is? Up to you to discuss that. ;) 4:27 - I honestly hope you get the time to. :) 5:25 - Then that's even more proof! 6:43 - Or maybe selfish in a way but that's just me. 7:50 - Must be all that bad writing the 4th game had. 11:45 - I vote for the US. 11:52 - Always happy to watch. :)

Am I the only one who can actually see sly as being moreso Canadian than anything? No evidence of that, but it's just a gut feeling. While I'm at it I'd like to see a sly Cooper pedigree with all his family
Good video! I, honestly, think he is American. And I don't know why but I think humans are living together with these anthropomorphic animals.. I just have a feeling about that
Plot twist: He's Canadian! lol. In all seriousness, I've always assumed Sly is either a French-born American, or American with one or both parents being French.
Hear me out there from all over the world the coopers but what if his dad actualy is from the eastblock sounds far fetched but they even had anriate cooper the roman who was a pirate if my brain remember it right but all together i think the moved from France to the us more
For sure the family moved somewhere down the line, Sly simply didn't remember his origin since perhaps it was never mentioned by either of his parents.
If that's the case, he was too young in the US. They moved to a different country and most likely remembered that, also considering the lack of files, pictures and documents.

Sly's father who's born in the US, could have moved to France for his honeymoon, Sly getting his father's accent. As for Murray and Bentley, same could apply although a bit far fetched still.
Just wondering how many sly cooper comics are there I wanna try and get my hands on those
Two :)
Another question is where is the Orphanage Sly, Bentley and Murray grew up located, that may answer where he is from
It could be the US.
Keep up The good vids and effort
I appreciate it!
What about wee one protective services? Couldn't be a clue of Sly's origin?
Hey VIVI are you gonna make top 10 hardest Master Thief Sprints
Hmm...I don't know really :P
Vivi make a letsplay of sly cooper going through all the theories related to it.
Let's plays I am currently not planning, at least that's not what I had in mind when starting the channel :)
Hmmm this got me thinking right now ahhh theory gonna love em'
hey, what is the first timeline of sly cooper?
I'm not sure since I'm not a Sly fan, but I would just guess he's from America and had visited Paris, France the time he first met the cop.
Highly likely!
How I'd see it:
Sly was born in the US, his mother being french, father american. Then, in the following days, Sly would start sightseeing Paris, thus leading to the first encounter between Carm and him, as well as all of the other following events yada yada yada
Sly's Father was named Connor, which is a rather american-sounding name imo.
Though, what about Connors Origins? What about Bruce O'Cooper, Connors Father? Where would he have been from? Bruce also sounds more american-ish
Well put :)
Where is everyone?"
I would also like to expand on the theory of Bruce O'Coop being Sly's grandfather. Surnames beginning with O' tend to be Irish in origin. There was a point in the not so distant past where the Irish mass immigrated to the US looking for new opportunities. Bruce O'Coop could've been among them.
Oooh sly videos
Hey guys dont worry. Im back to working on my Sly cooper anime opening. Ive been busy with cosplay and a convention.
Anime opening ay????
VTNVIVI its more of a parody to an already existing anime
Well interpol had his personal files on hand so it is pretty much a given he grew up in France somewhere for that to be the case however not in Paris due to him never visiting
Well the files could just be that, Sly Cooper who's wanted.
4:27 I still got that book:)
And I'm yet to talk about it aren't I :P
Well we should know more about Sly like his favorite food, or color or his likes and dislikes or something but I want to know his favorite food
His mom's spaghet.
How have you not read the book yet?
Blame Clockwerk.
Paris 🙏🏼💕
0:12 - Or a little unnecessary since I personally know the answer but I'll see what you have anyway.
0:30 - He's from America, I'll explain later why I believe that.
0:41 - Ah! In that case maybe I shouldn't bother. :D
1:23 - Ah it's great to hear you read out one of my comments in your videos. :)
1:24 - Whoo! :D
1:56 - Well if you end up saying that Carmelita was at her best in the series in THAT game, personally I won't mind too much but I'm sure someone else will.
2:58 - It was cheesy but it worked out well in those games. :)
4:06 - Either for a break or for something important, what that is? Up to you to discuss that. ;)
4:27 - I honestly hope you get the time to. :)
5:25 - Then that's even more proof!
6:43 - Or maybe selfish in a way but that's just me.
7:50 - Must be all that bad writing the 4th game had.
11:45 - I vote for the US.
11:52 - Always happy to watch. :)
Yo Vivi guess what i found out i was searching though some free games on PS4 store and guess what i found the entire Sly cooper games on there and also the Ratchet and Clank Future Saga and its all for free
You're referring to PS Now which is a streaming service :)
I should actually order the comics. I wanna read them.
They are posted on the wiki page :)
VTNVIVI That's good! Couldn't find them on Amazon anyways :/
I Wish they would make sly 5 ALREADY
I know O_O
Be alot better than no man's sky and Sonic boom....... Yeah I SAID IT WHO WANT A PEACE
Am I the only one who can actually see sly as being moreso Canadian than anything? No evidence of that, but it's just a gut feeling. While I'm at it I'd like to see a sly Cooper pedigree with all his family
I’m pretty sure Cooper is an English Surname.
I think his born France but we have to ask suckerpunch or Sanzaru Games
Yep pretty straight forward solution :P
Good video! I, honestly, think he is American. And I don't know why but I think humans are living together with these anthropomorphic animals.. I just have a feeling about that
Like that TV show in the 4th game? I still doubt it.
Plot twist: He's Canadian! lol.
In all seriousness, I've always assumed Sly is either a French-born American, or American with one or both parents being French.
I see :)
Good video😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
5:29 Buy the farm is just an expression to say they died.
I had NO IDEA O_O. Actually looking it up, the term has quite a few origin stories. But ultimately, it leads one to believe someone died.
Sly must be born in a different country
True true, possible.
im thinking he was born and raised im New York or Chicago
Hear me out there from all over the world the coopers but what if his dad actualy is from the eastblock sounds far fetched but they even had anriate cooper the roman who was a pirate if my brain remember it right but all together i think the moved from France to the us more
For sure the family moved somewhere down the line, Sly simply didn't remember his origin since perhaps it was never mentioned by either of his parents.
Finally his father might of been American and married a french girl in France.
;)
I think he is born somewhere in france
Possible!
It would be very neat if Sly was french but i doubt it.
Interesting
:)
Don't forget to check my pole in Twitter please vivi.
Isn’t Sly Japanese as well thanks to Roichi Cooper
Well it all stems from where he's actually born and raised.
"Le Another City" city in France, problem solved.
I think he is from the us but just does not remember
If that's the case, he was too young in the US. They moved to a different country and most likely remembered that, also considering the lack of files, pictures and documents.
Probably Canada
I think sly is from the united states.
Very high possibility, actually easiest scenario.
