    I made miniatures (furniture, food, decorative objects) for several years and it was so enjoyable, you can create a wonderful little world of minis and they always make people smile! :) A few years ago, I transitioned mediums and began doing pen sketches/watercolor in various sizes and mostly work on individual sheets of watercolor paper ... now this video makes me want to get a tiny sketchbook and give it a try! Thanks for these important tips about working in such small scale. ☮

      It sounds to me like you were made to have a tiny sketchbook. 😅 You could always make your own too. I have a few of the Inkberry ones waiting to be filled right now, but it would be nice to make a tiny sketchbook with 100% cotton! 😊

      @@LeslieStroz Hi Leslie! Right? 😃 Well, after I posted that comment, I thought to myself, wait, why don't I try to make my own tiny sketchbook! I used to make mini books that measure 1 inch tall by 3/4 inch wide with a shabby sort of binding, it was really fun and they are so cute. I've got some Arches watercolor paper as well as a Strathmore travel pad, which is also 100% cotton, so I'm going cut some pages from one of those and decide how I want to bind them and find out if that works. I'll let you know, if that's ok? 😃 I'm sure you would be great at making your own, too. Thanks so much for replying! ☮

    Thank you, Leslie. I love your tips. Listening, I realised... I've heard many people reference how important it is to paint from life, and for the actual painting process that makes sense. But, drawing? Why? I like to draw from a picture where things don't constantly move around and change proportion. So... I feel like I'm missing something. If you'd ever be interested in explaining the value in drawing from life, I'd love to watch it. Thanks again! 😊

    • @LeslieStroz
      @LeslieStroz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      For me, drawing is the foundation for painting. It’s where it all starts. If you understand how to draw first, painting becomes much easier. Drawing from life helps train the brain to see better and keep your lines expressive. I draw from photos often, but drawing from life helps me keep my lines and mark making looser. 😊

    using brown ink is a great idea! I've only ever used black as that's the only waterproof fineliner I have but I might have to look out for a different colour now 🥰

      I think it would be great to use a brown or green watercolor pencil to make your drawings. Then when you put water on it, they pretty much vanish.

    I love painting miniatures. Not as small as yours, but I do 2"x3" and frame them. Michaels sells really nice, cheap frames and they'll sell them at a bulk price. Now I just have to sell them 😂.
    I don't usually use pen because I think it's too harsh for such small works. Yours are beautiful. Glad I discovered another small painter!

    • @LeslieStroz
      @LeslieStroz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s awesome! The sketchbook size is 2x2” so close to what you do. I love drawing so much that the like and wash technique appeals to me, but I love straight up painting too. Thanks for the tip about frames at Michael’s… I’ll get some next time I’m in the US. 😊

    Viewfinder tool is called a "visual composition window" - back when I went through art and architecture school at the university, these premade windows were not available. We had to make ours out of card stock and used colored embroidery thread as the grid dividers. I made several VCWs with different aspect ratios, 3x5, 4x5, 5x5. They are wonderful tools for beginning artists to develop composition skills. Occasionally I'll pick one up just to verify what I'm imagining...

    Great tips - thank you! I put together what I thought was a good "out and about" kit planning on fair weather watercolor. Your video on art challenges motivated me to try PleinAirpril. I had a week of adjusting supplies/setup and my own weird rules and expectations. I am painting 4x4 so larger than your tiny but I did buy a ViewCatcher and it has been helpful in all the ways you said: placement, proportion, interesting scene. I had not thought of taking a similar photo and B&Wing it ... reviewing my first week's paintings ... oh ... I can see a lot more that I would like to do different based on this video: values, white space, no black or at least much less. On to week 2!

I have always worked in A4 or larger but my daughter gave me an ‘one sketch a day’ diary for Christmas that is slightly smaller than A5 and there are 2 days to a page! It was a real struggle at first and I have mostly stuck to single objects so this will help expand my horizons (no pun intended 😂)

    I definitely fall into the trap of too much outlining! I lose some of the detail after adding watercolour and then when I re-add details, it ends up looking too “heavy”. Need to practice minimal re-outlining after painting. Thanks for these tips!

    • @LeslieStroz
      @LeslieStroz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that’s always a challenge. The Prismacolors didn’t fade the way the UniPins do, but that could be the paper I’m using now more than the pens. We’ll see how it goes once I’m back to the cotton paper. It’s a constant discovery! 😊
