Grandparents are good for filling a role that at times parents can't, because they have raised children before, and therefore have a certain perspective that in the parent is lacking.

This was one of the most important scenes in the film. Being a parent definitely has its moments to where we say things that we would give out lives to take back, no matter how small.

This scene shows parents have emotions too. I’m not saying his response was right but it’s understandable. He’s trying to get his life back on track after losing his wife and job. His daughter is being a brat and saying hurtful things to him. He’s a human and is just as capable of having mental breakdowns as anyone else is.

What the scene demonstrates, the volatile remarks from both father and daughter, reveals that they were both still reeling from their loss. And when people are hurting emotionally, oftentimes they respond with anger, and it can cause them to say, or even do things, that ordinarily they wouldn't.

This scene is very powerful. My father would react and talk to me the same way George Carlin did. Sometimes as parents we may let something slip in words and let things out. I wouldn't say what Ben said, but still I see both of thier pent up emotions. But as a parent, we have to be nurturing and very careful of what we say, prioritize, and feel. And when Ollie (Affleck) said that line in 1:36, I was like: "Oouuchhh. Are you serious? Do you realize you are telling that to a little girl? What kind of parent tells his child that? That you, her dad, hate her and that she ruined your life? How do you think she's gonna feel after that? A father calling his own child "a little shit". Really tactful."

Mateo Airaudo I agree with you about the burdens of parenthood. I’m also abstaining from kids for that reason, but if you were to have kids, then the contract has been signed, no take backs. You have the responsibilities of parenthood, and if you mistreat them or subject them to verbal abuse because you’re having buyer’s remorse, then it’s not their fault. They didn’t ask to be born, or have an emotional petty douchebag as their parent. And yeah, kids act out, kids have breakdowns, they say horrible things. So what? They’re not the adults. The adults need to act like adults. No excuse for abuse, as my friend’s mother once said.

@@JimmySteller Although your take is very valid, I still find Ollie´s reaction understandable given the context in which the whole argument took place. And he may not be the perfect dad, but who is it? He did the best he could after losing both his wife and the job he loved in just a few weeks, and still he sacrificed everything for his kid and just when he finally considers the idea of doing something for himself and getting back his old job, his daughter treats him like crap. I mean, both were at fault. His response was not his brightest moment but not every kid has that kind of a breakdown. She pushed it too hard and the guy just lost control.

I hate how everyone jumps on the dad for lashing back at her. I don't care how old the little girl is, he didn't do anything wrong except want to move to New York. The guy's life has been hell since his wife died, and his own daughter tells him she hates him and wishes he had died instead of his wife. Sorry, but kids should be accountable for being that hateful and verbally abusive. Yes, he's the adult, but I don't like how it's set up that she can be as horrid as she wants to him and the viewer should just accept it. I actually felt bad for the dad throughout the whole movie, and I felt the most bad at that moment. His dad (her grandfather) is emotionally manipulative. His daughter is hateful and also manipulative. He lost his wife, his job, his livelihood, and the moral of the story is that to be emasculated and dependent on his aging father and not allowed to make something of himself for fear that his daughter would hate him....this movie really sucked. He couldn't even have a grownup moment with Liv Tyler because his daughter comes in, busts it open, and shames him. Geez.

As kids we´re never aware of the sacrifices our parents make to give us a good life. And, considering this was his chance to get back the job he always loved, his rant is totally understandable. I think you’re forgetting she’s a little kid, and a little kid can’t always control their emotions. He wanted to move to New York because that’s what he wanted, he didn’t take into account what she wanted. He was willing to take away the only childhood she’s ever known and loved just so he would go back to living in the past. That’s why she was so upset and lashed out at him. She was afraid of losing the things she loved most in her life. I’m not saying her behavior is right, but it’s asking a lot of a child give those things up for the sake of a job the parent wants. Sure he had a great job, but sometimes as a parent, you have to make sacrifices for your child. Especially when you are the only parent they have.

The point is, we all say things in the heat of the moment that we don't mean. Anger IS a very powerful emotion. We as adults should know to control it better because of our age and experience in life. Children, on the hand, don't know how to control their anger because they have not had that much experience in life yet. So, I agree that what gertie said to Ollie was wrong. but Ollie should've remained calm and reasoned with gertie. maybe ollie could work something out with his job interview such as finish early and then come to gertie's show. something ollie could've worked out. please remember that even though gertie might have said some really mean things to ollie, that ollie is only parent that gertie has ever known and that deep down she actually really loves him and cares about him because even though ollie ignored gertie for the fist few months of her life, he did take care of her and raise her for several years. So, she is attatched to ollie. both of them have said things in the heat of the moment. and what gertie has said, should not be taken in to consideration, because she is a kid.

From ages 5 through 22, I've had moments like that with my father... He would verbally hurt me... He'd tell me I was stupid, dramatic, and that he wished that he would have given me up for adoption back when I was a baby... And that (to this day) has mentally scarred me for life... and he doesn't even know that nor should I even tell him because I just know he wouldn't give a damn... bottom line generally: An actual father should be an actual man who would do anything to protect his own child(ren) from any type of harm...
