I love that Ahsoka was having a samurai duel while Mando was having a western duel at the other side of the gate
And honestly speaking, I love the tension between Mando and Michael Biehn, the tension when Biehn realizes that it's over, lays down his weapon and then tries to sucker punch Mando. Only, Mando's a faster draw. Pity I would've had Biehn actually HIT Mando, only to have Mando click his neck and then fire back. "That's why I wear Beskar...."

I think there is more to it. Morgan clearly has training but the bulk of her training assumed that Jedi and Sith use very specific styles. Upon seeing the switch up she realized all her training didn't account for a style she didn't recognize. She thought she had a counter for everything a Jedi would use, but the unexpected change up threw her for a loop. Which begs the question: Who exactly trained her?

Sound design and the visuals as well. As far as my knowledge goes, Ahsoka’s white sabers are the first ones we’ve ever seen in live action, and they looked awesome as well

Ya and the added pauses in sequence for the Arching of the sabers against the beskar was so sweet! And loved Ahsoka's fighting stances as well.
The resounding gong that the Beskar staff makes when it struck the ground made me feel things

2:04 I love when she switch to reverse grip, like how she usually fight, then proceed to stomp Elsbeth in seconds.

Knowing Morgan is a Nightsister really puts this fight in perspective. I thought it weird how much trouble Ahsoka had fighting, even getting disarmed by, someone who then seemed to be just some corrupt petty ruler. But nope, that was a goddamn Nightsister.

Never cared for her, I still don’t understand why she became a fan favorite honestly. I was like 7 when the clone wars movie came out and thought she was cool, but didn’t think much of her after. Now, 12 years later, I’m still thinking the same, she was cool and developed to a cool character, but I never really saw her as a bad character to begin with which is why I don’t understand why she became a fan favorite. Only reason why she’s a fan favorite is because she was hated in the beginning and now cherished. But she isn’t that epic of a character. I never hated her, though to be fair, I only watched clone wars when I was young because I love episodes that mainly had the clones in it. Like dude, heavy death episode rookies was cool. Commander bly and captain rex together was epic.
When Ahsoka had one of her sabers disarmed and then she switched her style to the reverse grip that she used in S1 of Clone Wars I thought that was a really cool call back. Well done, show writers.
Dave Faloni who was the creative director, I think, for clone wars directed this episode and is producing the show as well. He knows how Ahsoka do, mainly because he created her.

Thing is... Maybe you know this, but just in case... The show writers, one of them, is the actual creator of Ahsoka, Dave Filoni. And he also directed this episode. So... He knows his business. Disney should've just hired him to oversee the new trilogy story from the the start.

Then when she fought Maul again, she was at the level of a Knight despite losing both sabers, she still won bare handed. The point is, even with just the Shoto, Ahsoka can win without her main weapon and she is no longer frantically trying to reclaim it to defend herself. She spent some time without light saber and learnt to rely less on it
Ahsoka, who has fought General Grievous, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Asajj Ventress, Imperial Inquisitors, Pre Vizsla, AND survived order 66. Yeah I think she can take this lady.

@dygvu ducg Said no one ever. Ahsoka isn't a Mary Sue because we've seen her progression thoughout the Clone Wars on how she got to be the pwoerful person that she is in Mandalorian/Rebels. She has tons of experience and fought through countless battles but also _failed_ and failed a good amount, actually. She has flaws and has shown that she isn't perfect by making plenty of mistakes, one even got her whole squadron killed. You would know all of this if you actually tried to pay attention to her character instead of being an idiot and calling anyone who isn't Anakin or someone a Mary Sue.
The strong lady jedi we needed but not what we got😞. Ahsoka tano is just a very well written character with actual growth and progression.

Wether u wanna put a stamp of unworthiness on her character, you cannot disprove the simple fact, she is an extremely well written character who hasn’t succeeded in every major challenge she’s undergone throughout the clone war and purge. She wasn't playing, you are not disarmed by someone who you are just "playing around", the idea itself is inconsistent. Ahsoka was clearly better than her in skill, she was holding back for avoid kill her and took from her the information she needed but trying to beat her by disarm her or knock her out, then she realised that fighting that way was taking effort from her and Elsbeth was surprisingly
better than she expected (because Elsbeth was trained by Thrawn and she was probably almost as good as Pre Vizla), so Ahsoka decided to abandon the defence and take it her more seriously as a opponent, and then she defeated her in 10 seconds.
@General Grievous Ehm, no. There is a huge difference between "playing" and "hold back" against someone, Ahsoka first was holding back but really trying to disarm her or knock her out, later when that didn't work, she fought more seriously and won. Ahsoka was clearly better and was gonna won either way, but trying to lowball Morgan is unnecessary, she did pretty good for a no-force wielder.

Funny, but I had actually forgotten about this fight and just remembered Ahsoka interacting with Dinn and Grogu. I forgot that Morgan Elsbeth was already introduced in the franchise awhile ago, and was already looking for Thrawn.
Ahsoka being careful here. The magistrate is clearly outclassed. Ahsoka just didn't want to kill her by accident.
Doesn't help that that's about the worst place for a spear-wielder. Can't back up very far, can't circle... Nullifies basically every advantage a spear has against a sword.

@@user-vr5zk9ox8d it really is a brutal weapon. Almost any mistake you make and you can just maim various parts of your opponent. But not like a sword, where you actually need lots of effort to cut effectively; more like a knife through butter.

Also, I’m pretty sure -like 10000000000000000000000000% sure -it would have been real ez to just chop off her fingers by sliding it down the beskar shaft where her fingers were. No fingers? No fight. Simple. Last two seconds. Automatically cauterizes the wounds.

Was always nervous about how Ashoka would work in live-action, but they nailed it. Especially when she reverses the lightsaber like how she held it in the clone wars show.

@@Skull211 This is set after clone ward and revels so it makes sense her voice is deeper because she’s older. As for the tekku things, they already commented the reason they weren’t longer was because it got in the way of stunts.

I love how Morgan knew the fight wasn't about whether she could win, but how long she could hold her own and Ahsoka respected that by not taking advantage of her lack of a lightsaber. Man this kind of subtext is what makes this episode genius

Also think Ahsoka wasn’t fighting to kill, just disarm. She needed her alive to get information on Thrawn. Morgan probably also knew that so she took advantage with a duel.

I just noticed Ahoska's disarm, hooking the saber grip around Morgan's weapon is similar to what Anakin pulled on Dooku. Only he went a little further and lopped his hands off.

Wasn’t too thrilled about LA Ahsoka at first, but after seeing Dawson play her she got the looks down, the way she talks, her mannerisms. They did her well, I dont think filoni would have put her in if it didnt look good

I was honestly a little disappointed with this fight. They kept on cutting back to Mando which ruined the momentum and the build-up to the fight imo. It also felt a little slow and like they were dancing rather than trying to kill each other. I know Ahsoka wanted to keep her alive but the fight should have been the beskar lady on the offense with Ahsoka holding a good defense.

1:02 probably my favorite "lets get down" moment in any duel. Elsbeth knew she had little chance against Ahsoka, and yet she stood her ground. Respect.
I can't imagine how difficult this was to choreograph without Rosario accidentally hitting Diana's hands with the prop saber. They did a fantastic job making it look like a plausible fight.
I mean, prop weapons are usually made from foam rubbers or plastics and other soft stuff. Lightsabers especially can be made of softer materials since they have no edge and have to be cgi'ed in anyways. If she got hit, would it even hurt?
@@sws212 You can see the prop sabers in a lot of behind the scenes. Now I don't know if Ahsoka is using the same props as in the Sequel Trilogy, but if they are you can hear the pop when they hit and they have a distinct rigidity (they bend at the point of impact and stay bent without returning to their previous shape).
I think it would sting.
But also my comment was pointing out how Ahsoka needed to deliberately aim for the center of the bo-staff so as not to disarm her opponents exposed hands, which almost looked jarring.
It helps that when it comes to weapons work that Diana Lee Inosanto isn't an amateur. She is the daughter of Filipino Martial Art and Jeet Kune Do legend Dan Inosanto and the Goddaughter of Bruce Lee. She literally grew up around weapons and fighting.
Insanto has primarily worked as a stunt performer and she has been doing it for a couple of decades. She knows what she is doing.
Man, remember when everyone severely underestimated Morgan and thought she was some kind of regular non-Force sensitive? That sure aged very well...
Dave Filoni has no respect for the Nightsisters.

@moddedinkling4168 Ventress is literally fridged to manipulate us into feeling heartbroken for some guy she just met like a week beforehand and yet fell so hard in love with him she literally trained him in the ways of the witches, which is just a huge, disgusting disservice to her character after already having her people humiliated by Grievous. Talzin isn't treated much better, some don't even understand that she did what she did out of genuine love for her family and not greed or power lust. Merrin is made to be a glorified, hit-it-and-quit-it sidekick to some guy she also just met, granted that wasn't Filoni. Morgan is a bitter tyrant devoted to Thrawn. They can't just live in peace, they have to play second fiddle and punching bag to Jedi and Sith always. It's frustrating, especially looking at them in Legends.
@@XJ0461C Uuum the Nightsisters ARE punching bags. The Jedi and the Sith are top form warriors who both managed to conquer galaxies. The Nightsisters were a cult on Dathomir that had some cultic uses of the force. Nothing close to the level of the Jedi or the Sith. They are a cheap knockoff brand. Nothing more. Legends is dead. Deal with it.

Sidious feared them in everything for good reason and they're infinitely more interesting than both who are also cults by the way. The lack of consistency in newer material has been due to bad writing, pure and simple. Grievous isn't the only character Filoni and Lucas have screwed up.
this fight scene easily climbs the ranks as one of my favorites. The cinematography, the choreography, its all an absolute masterpiece!

The choreography was garbage. To compare that to anything from the prequel trilogy is a joke. They didn't even get her lightsaber form right. No one designed lightsaber fights like Nick Gillard and no one ever will.

I am kinda of glad that in Ahsoka, it mentioned that Morgan is actually a nightsister. This make little more sense of how she can hold up against Ahsoka.
I really like that when Ahsoka lost one of her lightsabers, she fell back on her original fighting style of reverse grip.
I love the story this fight tells without dialogue. There is a minor respect for ones enemy here that we dont usually see. I also loved the way Ahsoka adapts when disarmed. Switching up your fighting style to a way you are familiar with so you fight as efficiently as possible. Badass.

This is the most patient and elegant Star Wars fight ever!
I love how this episode managed to perfectly execute just how fast and agile Ahsoka is, whether it be her accelerated force jumps or flips, she’s still got the same technique as the animated version albeit creatively edited due to the limitations of live action.
And it makes sense that the Magistrate was able to keep up with Ahsoka since she received training from Thrawn, but inevitably due to not having a connection to the force the magistrate was beaten, still put up a surprisingly good fight however.
She's also that good because she is a Dathomir Night Sister.
But since when does Admiral Thrawn was known as a great lightsaber or other closecombat weapon wielder or so that he can train others in doing so?
@@richardpagel6959 well in Star Wars Rebels we see he was a skilled martial artist, so it’s reasonable to assume he had skill In other areas.
Yeah I feel people aren't giving Morgan enough credit here. Ahsoka is definitely not giving 100% but Morgan is skilled enough to disarm her; she clearly has years of experience. Love the sound of the Spear hitting the ground.
@@OptimalFBax all things considered if Ahsoka did give it the 100%, Morgan wouldn’t have lasted nearly as long. Especially when we take into account the various Duels Ahsoka has participated in.
I appreciate Ahsoka's honorable conduct, allowing the Magistrate to challenge her in single combat despite being hopelessly outclassed. It was never going to end any other way.

And it was at approximately the 2:27 mark of this scene when the entire Star Wars fandom had this look 😮 on our faces because we knew that line was going to lead to something special.
0:55 if you look at the water, Ahsoka's lightersaber and Morgan Elsbeth shadow reflect the "light vs dark" aspect.
I believe this is one of the first time's (Not counting Sequel) that we see a melee combatant fight without a Lightsaber versus a Lightsaber. I find the use of non-lightsaber melee combat severely lacking in the live actions universe, and I'm glad to see the Mandalorian presents some more.
I was about to menton Finn vs Traitor but you said not including the sequels. Or Snoke's guards. Phasma could have had potential if they did something with her.
Players had to use vibroblades against the Sith in the Kotor series, but I get that applies to games only

Damn, best Star Wars fight scene I have witnessed since the Prequels.
I just realised how weak this fight is. Litterally we have so many fights where we see Ahsoka being unstopable, and then there is this "barely" a fight, where Ahsoka somehow loose a lightsaber.
This is honestly the best live action Disney era lightsaber fight to date.
All the other good ones are animated (Ahsoka vs Maul, Ahsoka vs Vader, and Obi Wan vs Maul).
Ashoka holding lightsaber backward is equivalent to a homie holding a gun sideway.
It's so surreal seeing Ahsoka live action and justly portrayed.

Ahsoka is clearly playing with Elsbeth, but I like how it shows when she lost her saber that she may have been underestimating her a little bit. It's not unlike her to be a little bit over confident at times, particularly against non-force wielders.
One of the hair stylists confirmed Elsbeth is actually a former nightsister. I think that explain a little why Ahsoka was struggling a bit against her.

I think it's interesting that originally the Dark Saber was made because Lucas didn't want a weapon that could deflect lightsabers. But now there's a beskar spear smacking against a lightsaber on the most important Star Wars anything to happen in the past ten years.
A plot point this series seems to want to show is that pure Beskar once refined can hold against lights sabers. To be fair that has always kinda been a plot point since Mandalorian armor was made to withstand light saber strikes.

Okay. You’re misunderstanding. Before the Mandalorian, maybe like 6-7 years ago when Maul first came back to the Clone Wars, George Lucas didn’t want anything to deflect against lightsabers. He wanted it to be an unstoppable weapon. There’s a reason why the Darksaber looks like a vibrosword, because it was originally supposed to be one.
It wasn’t until The Mandalorian that they introduced Beskar again.
Don't know if she was supposed to be a Witch of Dathomir all along but it makes total sense. Also the actress is just too good to not bring back. I've been pretty critical of them but bravo Filoni/Lucasfilm/Disney.
She was supposed to be a Nightsister all along. I think someone from the Mandalorian production team said it in an interview after the episode we see here first aired.

The episode has shown a perfect balance between the Lightsaber duels of the Original Trilogy and the Prequels. Ahsoka shows a precise, practical, economic, and yet an elegant fighting style.

One thing I've always had an issue with when it came to light sabers is that they never looked like they had any weight to them but here you can really feel the impact of each strike fixing that issue
Well, light sabers do have no weight. The way it looks different here is probably because they fought with material that weighs something.
